Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Princeton Seminary Bulletin, Vol. 29: June, 1935 Here you discern the only right Christian motive for social reform and therefore the right source of the Christian minister's interest in questions of social reform. It is not that we, as priests unto God, desire that there should be more material comfort and security as such for everybody; we are not in the least interested in that, as such; it is that we demand, in the name of God, as though God did entreat men by us, that there should be right personal relationship between men and women. It is the sinful lovelessness of our present social order, its blasphemous flouting of an eternal will which we know as love, that calls forth our {condemnation and active seeking in the name of Christ of better things. The weak ness of the social gospel in this country has been, I believe, that it has been too often divorced from its evangelical roots, from any profound, searching, challenging for given sense of the love of God which has loved you to the uttermost, and whose recoil from, yet clinging to, man in his lovelessness you are beginning in some measure to share. No one who has seen the love of God in Jesus Christ can be any other than radical in his criticism of the present social order. Only he is a radical with a difference, and the difference is that the love of God in Jesus Christ has pierced his soul. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Princeton Seminary Bulletin, Vol. 16: November, 1922 I deem it a great privilege, as your friend of many years, to be permitted to address a few Words to you in the form of a charge, remind-ing you of some of your responsibilities and of the expectations of the Board of Dirce tors, the Board of Trustees, your associates of the faculty, your students, and of the Church at large. I am not at all competent to advise you con cerning much of the work which falls to your lot in this highly technical and difficult branch of Theological instruction. Strange to say, this is the second time that I have been appointed to charge a Professor in the Old Testament Department - the accomplished Old Testament Scholar wit-h whom you have been most closely associated, and now yourself. I can only ac count for this double choice on the ground of close friendship. While I make no pretension whatever to knowledge entitling me to speak to you as a mentor, I do have certain convictions in this matter which I desire to voice, and which I beg you to consider. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Princeton Seminary Bulletin, 2008, Vol. 29 As theologically apt as it was for the bishop to focus on right relationships in transnational mission, and as visionary as it was for him to call for such relation ships to abound even in a context of significant worldly differences, what strikes me as most unusual is the notion that his audience could give friends. Note that he did not say send friends. He assumed the function of sending, but he saw something larger than that. Perhaps he saw that there is little that is random about who knows whom in this world. There are systems at work that generate and shape the opportunities people have to get acquainted and form bonds of friendship, and he was talking to some of the people in charge of those systems. It is a hefty issue, with lectures written by Flett, Bynum, Graham, Hanciles, Hunsinger, Lewis, Lieu, Miller, Najman, Sacks, and Young. The issue proper concludes with McKee's essay on Calvin's First French Institutes. As in the past, we complete the issue with a list of works published by PTS faculty in the previous year.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Princeton Seminary Bulletin, Vol. 30: June, 1936 Let me recall for you the great minds which shaped this ideal of 125 years ago. The first suggestion of a Theological Seminary evidently came from Archibald Alexander, evangelist, pas tor, preacher, college president, theologian, a commanding figure in the councils of the Church, and he naturally became the first professor of the Seminary. President Timothy Dwight of Yale College, as a delegate to the Assembly of 1809 from the Congregational Association of Connecticut, took a prominent part in promot ing the new project. The chairman of the representative committee which formulated the Plan was Ashbel Green, President of the Col lege of New Jersey, and the Moderator who presided over the Assembly of 1811, which adopted the Plan, was Eliphalet Nott, who, apart from his unique name and outstanding abil ity as a scientist, teacher, preacher, and statesman, has the great distinction of having served as the President of Union College for sixty-two years. The Plan thus conceived, worked out. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Princeton Seminary Bulletin, Vol. 3: May 1909 The main purpose, in the publication of the seminary bulletin, is to ex tend to the Alumni a cordial greeting and to suggest to them items of interest in the active life of the Seminary. It is further hoped that future editions may contain more news of the Alumni; but for this the bulletin must depend upon the generous assistance of the graduates, who are urged to send to the Rev. Joseph H. Dulles, Librarian of the Seminary, all matters of interest to our Alumni. The many expressions of appreciation from those to whom the bulletin has come, encourage the belief that its publication will receive this needed assistance and support.
