Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Princeton Seminary Bulletin, 2006, Vol. 27 Acknowledging this might lead us to switch our attention from the past to present and then to the future. Perhaps we will discover the rationale of the seminary if we ask what functions we need seminaries to perform now and how we are to anticipate their role in years to come. But once again, this is not a very promising approach. Placing too much emphasis on contemporary relevance runs the risk of falling victim to passing fashion and thus being without any abiding purpose. Focusing too much on anticipated need ignores the fact that human beings are strikingly poor predictors of the future despite a seemingly irresistible inclination to try to do so. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Princeton Seminary Bulletin, 2006, Vol. 27: Number 2 The Gospel thus advances a view of the religious beliefs and practices of Jesus and his movement as being in conflict with the ruling circles of colonial Palestine, the overseeing masters of imperial Rome, and the supreme ruler of the demonic this-world - all characterized as in league with one another. This conflict, moreover, bears broader, even universal dimensions. To begin with, it reaches beyond the ranks of the elite to the masses in general, whether in Palestine or throughout the Empire. In addition, it further encompasses, in principle, all political frameworks and all ethnic groupings beyond the borders of Rome. It is thus a conflict that impinges ultimately on all human beings in the this-world. It is, therefore, a conflict not only profoundly religious but also profoundly political. The Gospel is thus a text that seeks to Wield power in the religious and political spheres at once. It invalidates and displaces all existing institutions, authorities, values, norms, ideals, and goals, while promoting and emplacing alternative ones. This the Gospel does from within the imperial-colonial framework of Rome, and, as such, acknowledges and problematizes the uneven relationship of power at work within this framework, thereby making it a postcolonial text. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Princeton Seminary Bulletin, Vol. 35: March, 1942 It is important to observe in this connection that a leading American seminary which had decided to inaugurate a summer term dropped the idea immediately when the Faculty discovered that out of two hundred and fifty students only ten were interested in returning for summer work. Nevertheless, while the introduction of a special summer term does not appear to be the way in which the Church and the nation can be best served in the present crisis, the Faculty of Princeton Seminary will be willing to respond to. Emergency appeals and will allow outstanding students to grad uate in less than the normal time. Not only so; the Seminary will admit without delay students who are graduated from college at mid-year. Spe cial introductory courses will be provided for such students to enable them to finish their seminary course exactly three years from the time of their admission. No one can tell, of course, how the prolongation of the war will affect the enrollment of students and the normal life of the Seminary. We antici pate, as other seminaries do, that the entering class in 1942 will be smaller than the class enrolled in 1941. We know of a number of students who would ordinarily be coming to the Seminary next year who have felt it to be their duty as Christians and as citizens to' volunteer for active service. So important is it, however, that the, ranks of the Christian ministry should be maintained at full strength in the present crisis, that it would be dis astrous if candidates for the ministry dropped to a low level in quality or in quantity. The Seminary looks, therefore, at this time to its Alumni to keep the claims of Christ's service in the ministry before the ablest Chris tian young men in their congregations and their sphere of influence. When the present horror shall have ended, the Church of Jesus Christ will need as never before in her history, the largest possible number of consecrated sons and daughters, to face a world that in the interval, will have redis covered and applied to itself the forgotten designation lost. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Princeton Seminary Bulletin, Vol. 29: June, 1935 Here you discern the only right Christian motive for social reform and therefore the right source of the Christian minister's interest in questions of social reform. It is not that we, as priests unto God, desire that there should be more material comfort and security as such for everybody; we are not in the least interested in that, as such; it is that we demand, in the name of God, as though God did entreat men by us, that there should be right personal relationship between men and women. It is the sinful lovelessness of our present social order, its blasphemous flouting of an eternal will which we know as love, that calls forth our {condemnation and active seeking in the name of Christ of better things. The weak ness of the social gospel in this country has been, I believe, that it has been too often divorced from its evangelical roots, from any profound, searching, challenging for given sense of the love of God which has loved you to the uttermost, and whose recoil from, yet clinging to, man in his lovelessness you are beginning in some measure to share. No one who has seen the love of God in Jesus Christ can be any other than radical in his criticism of the present social order. Only he is a radical with a difference, and the difference is that the love of God in Jesus Christ has pierced his soul. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Princeton Seminary Bulletin, Vol. 33: July, 1939 That, at least, must be the Christian's diagnosis of the modern man's predica ment. The Christian believes, moreover, that the attitude of Christian love can be instilled in man only by the Christian Gospel, and that the Church is the primary agent for the propagation of the Gospel. Why is it, then, that the Church is so largely unsuccessful in its missionary function? Why is it regarded by so many men today as an out-moded institution and archaic cult? Why does the great majority of mankind, even in so - called Christian countries, repudiate the Gospel and deny its redemptive power? It is this aspect of our contemporary predicament, an aspect which the Church cannot ignore, that I should like to consider in some detail. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Princeton Seminary Bulletin, Vol. 52: May, 1959 In 1929, when the writer became a member of the Department of Oriental Languages and Literatures at Princeton University, some of his colleagues in a supercilious sense occasionally referred to the Seminary as a medieval institution with no interest in scientific scholarship. Throughout his career in Princeton he remained a member of both faculties and had the great personal satisfaction of observing a marked change in the attitude of his University colleagues toward the Seminary. This has been due in a marked degree to the scholarship Of our President. This furthermore in concrete fashion is manifested in the fact that since 1941 Dr. Mackay has been a member of the Advisory Council of the Department of Philosophy of the University. Before returning in 1932 to the United States, the land in which he reached the climax of his career, his eminence in philosophy was recognized in Peru, where in 1925 he was elected to the chair of Philosophy in the University of San Marcos, Lima. It cannot be gainsaid that a professor in a theological seminary has a sacred calling to make original contributions to the literature of his special field, and in this respect Dr. Mackay has continued his interest in things intellectual in spite of the multiplicity of his administrative duties. In a thesis written in 1958 by the Reverend Stanton R. Wilson for the degree of th.m., sixteen typewritten pages are devoted to listing the literary products of Dr. Mackay. Besides his numerous articles in various learned jour mals and his personal messages in The Princeton Seminary Bulletin he is the author of the following books: Mas yo os Digo; El Sentido de la Vida; That Other America; A Preface to Christian Theology; Heritage and Destiny; Christianity on the Frontier. Gillespie, President Of Princeton Theological Seminary, that great bastion of the Reformed faith. I confess that the word bastion caused me to slink down in my chair behind the pulpit and cover my eyes. How often had I already heard this school associated with a circle the wagons or go into laager mentality? SO at lunch after the service, I gently chided my host about his introduction. He looked surprised, and when I mentioned the term bastion he said, I hope you do not think that I was being pejorative. I pray for your school every day of my life, that it will keep its finger in the dike. For if Princeton Seminary goes the way certain divinity schools have gone and Others are going, it will be all over for mainline Protestantism in this country. The full significance of that comment did not register until later when I attended an international meeting akin to our American Academy of Religion held in Melbourne, Australia. There I participated in a workshop led by Dr. Conrad Cherry, at the time professor of religious studies at Indiana. It was a progress report on a research project, funded by the Lilly Endowment, that focused on the history, present state, and future prospects of the relationship between so - called theological studies and religious studies in American aca demia. It was for me an eye Opener. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
