Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Princeton Review, Vol. 54: July-December, 1878 I have said that a great want of our times, in order to test at once science and philosophy, is a knowledge of human nature. I point to a full and systematized knowledge of human nature, as this is to be reached through exhaustive analysis of experience, and also by summary of the latest and surest results attained by anatomical and physiological research. Iventure to submit that such knowledge is a want of the times, not merely on the ground that people generally need much enlight enment on the matter, but that this want still exists even in the case of those who are competent guides of others on distinct divisions of the great subject. Scientific men need to come into fuller possession of the results of analysis of mental experi ence. Philosophic thinkers, devoted to the study of all that belongs to mind, need to allow fora more extended study Of the nerve-system, with its great centre and extended ramifica tions. If scientific men declare that human nature, as well as all subordinate organism, must come within the sweep of seien tific inquiry, we have no Opposition to offer to the allegation. But we have to suggest that science comes up with a more diffi cult task here than it has ever encountered before and all men are in possession Of a large amount of material with which to test results. This piece of work is not to be done in the labora tory, or by geological expeditions, or by dredging parties on quiet waters, or by the most detailed observations in natural history. Nor is it to be got through by bringing any amount of fibre and tissue under the microscope. All work in the de partments named has its own place and its recognized value. But when it is proposed to include human nature within a scien tific account of known existence, human nature itself must be studied, and this is the hardest piece of study which scientific men have faced. When Huxley began to study and expound Descartes' Method when Darwin advanced to account for the general acknowledgment Of moral distinctions among men when Tyndall went forward to treat of the interaction of social forces when Haeckel followed Darwin back to a point in the history of creation where could be seen the origin of 21 z' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Princeton Review, Vol. 54: January-June, 1878 To give the subject the fullest attention. However. Let the objection be considered more minutely. Men must have sound reasons for saying that the doctrine of eternal punishment is repugnant to the nature of God, and is contradicted by his jus tice. What are they? It is difficult to imagine more than two. It may be urged that the disadvantages under which men come into the world are such that it would be wrong to punish them eternally and it may be said that the sins of which men are guilty do not assume a gravity which calls for such a pen alty in other words, that endless punishment is excessive pun ishment. These arguments deserve separate consideration. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science news is met by the public with a mixture of fascination and disengagement. On the one hand, Americans are inflamed by topics ranging from the question of whether or not Pluto is a planet to the ethics of stem-cell research. But the complexity of scientific research can also be confusing and overwhelming, causing many to divert their attentions elsewhere and leave science to the “experts.” Whether they follow science news closely or not, Americans take for granted that discoveries in the sciences are occurring constantly. Few, however, stop to consider how these advances—and the debates they sometimes lead to—contribute to the changing definition of the term “science” itself. Going beyond the issue-centered debates, Daniel Patrick Thurs examines what these controversies say about how we understand science now and in the future. Drawing on his analysis of magazines, newspapers, journals and other forms of public discourse, Thurs describes how science—originally used as a synonym for general knowledge—became a term to distinguish particular subjects as elite forms of study accessible only to the highly educated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When and where did science begin? Historians have offered different answers to these questions, some pointing to Babylonian observational astronomy, some to the speculations of natural philosophers of ancient Greece. Others have opted for early modern Europe, which saw the triumph of Copernicanism and the birth of experimental science, while yet another view is that the appearance of science was postponed until the nineteenth century. Rather than posit a modern definition of science and search for evidence of it in the past, the contributors to Wrestling with Nature examine how students of nature themselves, in various cultures and periods of history, have understood and represented their work. The aim of each chapter is to explain the content, goals, methods, practices, and institutions associated with the investigation of nature and to articulate the strengths, limitations, and boundaries of these efforts from the perspective of the researchers themselves. With contributions from experts representing different historical periods and different disciplinary specializations, this volume offers a fresh perspective on the history of science and on what it meant, in other times and places, to wrestle with nature.
