Book excerpt: A Children's Colorbook inspired by my daughter Facebook: Christopher Pearson Instagram: Christopher Pearson12 Twitter: @christo81547663 Email: [email protected] The princess and pink giraffe is a 586 word children's book about a princess who had a beautiful life and lives in a wonderful land with talking animals, singing birds and colorful trees. One day while traveling through the land, the princess is approached by a talking lion, who informs her of a remarkable wonder eventually the princess would stumble upon a pink giraffe who was crying and sad, due to the giraffes friends of normal appearance teasing the pink giraffe, neglecting her and leaving her lonely. So the princess cheers up the pink giraffe and invites the pink giraffe to accompany the princess in her beautiful land of play with some of her friends. The princess and pino giraffe is a story about friendship, sharing, acceptance and bravery. The princess being brave enough to humble herself and show compassion to someone hurting, and bravery of the pink giraffe with opening up and allowing others to accept her. I wrote this book as a way to encourage healthy interactions amongst children and a antidote to bullying and mistreatment amongst one another. The princess and the pink giraffe with its rhythmic style is a story that will be enjoyed by parents, teachers and children alike.

Book excerpt: "The thought-provoking reflections on personality and growth add insight and discussability."--The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books Fourth grade scientists are not meant to be babysitters. The second book in the Nora Notebooks finds Nora Alpers in unfamiliar territory. Nora Alpers has just become a ten-year-old aunt. To prepare for the new arrival, Nora has been writing down baby-related facts in her special notebook, just like she does with her favorite subject: ants. She likes the idea that someone who studies the A-N-T is also an A-U-N-T, even though she doesn’t know anything about taking care of babies. A new family member isn’t the only thing stressing Nora out. At school, Nora has to write journals in the voice of a pioneer on the Oregon Trail and prepare for the annual science fair. Science is normally Nora’s best subject—until Nora ends up being paired with science-hating, cat-obsessed Emma! How will Nora ever learn to be a good aunt if she’s trying to survive the Oregon Trail and arguing against Emma’s unscientific science-fair ideas? Readers will welcome the return of Nora who Publishers Weekly called “delightful[ly] enterprising” in a starred review.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1950s, Anne Innis Dagg was a young zoologist with a lifelong love of giraffe and a dream to study them in Africa. Based on extensive journals and letters home, Pursuing Giraffe vividly chronicles the realization of that dream and the year that she spent studying and documenting giraffe behaviour. Dagg was one of the first zoologists to study wild animals in Africa (before Jane Goodall and Dian Fossey); her memoir captures her youthful enthusiasm for her journey, as well as her näiveté about the complex social and political issues in Africa. Once in the field, she recorded the complexities of giraffe social relationships but also learned about human relationships in the context of apartheid in South Africa and colonialism in Tanganyika (Tanzania) and Kenya. Hospitality and friendship were readily extended to her as a white woman, but she was shocked by the racism of the colonial whites in Africa. Reflecting the twenty-three-year-old author’s response to an “exotic” world far removed from the Toronto where she grew up, the book records her visits to Zanzibar and Victoria Falls and her climb of Mount Kilimanjaro. Pursuing Giraffe is a fascinating account that has much to say about the status of women in the mid-twentieth century. The book’s foreword by South African novelist Mark Behr (author of The Smell of Apples and Embrace) provides further context for and insights into Dagg’s narrative.
