Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: Sound insulation is an important aspect of building performance. This book is a comprehensive guide to sound and vibration theory and its application to the measurement and prediction of sound insulation in buildings. It enables the reader to tackle a wide range of issues relating to sound insulation during the design and construction stages of a building, and to solve problems in existing buildings. The book has been written for engineers, consultants, building designers, students in acoustics, researchers and those involved in the manufacture and design of building products. Key aspects are that it: * Explains the fundamental theory using examples that show its direct application to buildings * Guides the reader through the links between measurement and theory * Explains concepts that are important for the application, interpretation and understanding of guidance documents, test reports, product data sheets, published papers, regulations and Standards * Makes direct reference to ISO and EN Standards on sound insulation * Contains a large number of illustrations showing measurements, predictions and example calculations for quick reference Carl Hopkins previously worked on building acoustics and environmental noise at the Building Research Establishment. During this time he was involved with sound insulation in research, consultancy, standardization, and building regulations as well as being an advisor on acoustics to government departments. He is currently a Senior Lecturer at the University of Liverpool within the Acoustics Research Unit of the School of Architecture.

Part E of the Building Regulations for England and Wales has therefore introduced substantially improved standards for noise control and stringent new requirements for the testing of completed buildings. This new book explains the regulations in detail and provides recommendations for good design and construction. It explains those aspects of sound transmission necessary for an understanding of Part E of the Regulations.

Book excerpt: Sound protection may even play an important role at the design stage of a project, because the orientation of a building and its plan layout may influence it. Important factors to be taken into account are noise impacting on the building from the outside and noise generated by people and technical equipment inside the building. Basics Sound Insulation conveys to the reader a thorough understanding of sound protection requirements in the design and construction of a building. To start with, the basics of acoustics are explained, including basic terms of physics, how sound is generated and propagated, and how sound is perceived. This is followed by an explanation of how sound emissions are assessed and what sound-reducing and design options are available to the designer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide offers practical solutions for ordinary noise problems that a person is likely to meet. The book describes the ways in which sounds are generated, travel to the listener, and affect his hearing and well-being. Recommendations are given for controlling noise at the source and along its path of travel, and for protecting the listener. This guide instructs the reader by way of "Warning Sings" on how to determine whether he is being subjected in his environment to prolonged noise exposures that may prove hazardous to his hearing.Remedies are given for noise problems that a person is likely to find in his home, at work and at school, while traveling, and in the growth and development of his community. The remedies include noise prevention techniques and selection of quiet alternatives to existing noise sources. General principles for selecting quiet appliances are given. Ways of searching for the sources of noise and for determining the paths over which they travel to the listener are described. A detailed index is given for individual ways of looking for inherently quiet homes and travel accomodations are described. In a final chapter, there are suggestions for enlisting community help where large external sources of noise must be quieted, such as those arisseing from public utilities and public transportation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excessive noise levels are generally acknowledged to have adverse effects on our environment. Studies indicate that excessive noise levels can cause fatigue in exposed individuals, lower efficiency and productivity, impaired speech communication, and hearing loss. Excessive noise is almost everywhere today - in the office, in schools, hospitals and other institutional facilities, in all classes of public buildings, and in our factories. INDUSTRIAL NOISE High noise levels in factories can make speech communication in the plant difficult and at times impossible. Foremen are often unable to hear warning shouts from co-workers. The problem of hearing loss due to excessive noise exposure is of particular concern to industry, and to the federal government. In the early 1970s, the United States Congress passed the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) which sets criteria for health hazards and established limits for noise exposure of industrial workers. The OSHA Noise Standard was amended in 1982 to require audiometric testing of all employees exposed to noise levels of 85 dB or above for eight hours. A NOISE IN COMMERCIAL AND INSTITUTIONAL BUILDINGS While noise levels in offices, stores, schools, and other commercial and institutional buildings seldom reach those encountered in many industrial environments, they often reach levels which are distracting to the occupants of such buildings. Impairment of speech communica tion among workers, or inversely the lack of speech privacy, are both deterrents to effiCiency and productivity and are detrimental to the occupants' comfort and sense of well-being.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermal and Acoustic Insulation deals with general aspects of thermal insulation, condensation, properties of inorganic insulation materials, organic high void insulation materials, glass, and glazing. The book also describes noise insulation, computerized insulation calculations, fire properties of insulation materials. The book explains thermal insulation, heat transfer (through conduction, convection, radiation), the theory of water vapor diffusion, and dehumidification. The two types of insulation materials in common use prevent the passage of radiant heat through reflection or by impede the flow of conducted heat. The engineer should choose insulation materials with a low thermal conductivity that also have a very high void content. The book suggests, in practice, a material with a k-value of 0.035. The other properties of insulation materials are mechanical strength, physical resistance, chemical resistance, temperature limits, fire resistance, hygroscopy, fungoid resistance, and pest resistance. The text describes a variety of materials are suitable for insulation, such as gypsum, foamed asbestos, foam glass, glass fiber wool, expanded perlite, vermiculite, and foamed plastics. The book will prove beneficial for architects, for computer programmers involved in insulation, for engineers working in building construction, insulation, fire prevention, as well as for private house- or corporate building-owners.
