Book excerpt: Poland held presidential and parliamentary elections in the fall of 2005. After several months, a ruling coalition consisting of three populist-nationalist parties was formed; the presidency and prime minister's post are held by Lech and Jaroslaw Kaczynski, identical twin brothers who have increasingly consolidated their power. Their government's nationalist policies have caused controversy domestically, in both the political and economic arenas, and in foreign relations as well. Relations with some neighboring states and the European Union have been strained at times, but ties with the United States have not undergone significant change. Some observers believe that a recent dispute within the coalition may spark early elections. This report may be updated as events warrant. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Democratic government has now been entrenched in Poland. An increasingly significant European actor, Poland presents problematic but also stimulating challenges to new NATO and EU associates. This authoritative overview examines in depth the constitutional and governmental framework in Poland since 1989 and its central political institutions, mechanisms and actors. Sanford demonstrates how the governmental system evolved pragmatically during the 1990s to cope with modernization and consolidated viable independent statehood consensually around Poland's hardy constitutional values.

Book excerpt: Witness history in the making as you turn the pages of time and discover the fascinating lives of famous explorers, leaders of twentieth-century politics and government, and great Americans. One August day in 1980, Lech Walesa pushed his way past the Polish police, climbed over a twelve-foot wall, and jumped onto a bulldozer, calling to Polish shipyard workers to continue their strike for higher wages and other demands. Walesa’s fiery speech inspired the workers and kept the strike alive. His call to action that day ultimately brought about important changes in Poland and established his leadership of the movement that became known as Solidarity. Lech Walesa: The Road to Democracy chronicles Walesa’s dramatic role as the leader of his country’s democratic future and its transformation from a communist regime to a democratic government. The son of a farmer and an electrician by trade, Walesa overcame police oppression and imprisonment to lead Solidarity and win the Nobel Prize. In 1990, Lech Walesa became Poland’s first democratically elected noncommunist president.

Book excerpt: Background and Issues for the United States Carl Ek Specialist in International Relations Foreign Affairs, Defense, and Trade Division Summary After a governmental deadlock caused by intra-coalition squabbling, Poland held snap parliamentary elections on October 21, 2007; the vote was seen by many as a referendum on the governing style and policies of the then-ruling Law and Justice party. [...] Although PiS received more votes in 2007 than it had in the 2005 elections, the increase came largely at the expense of its former coalition partners, SO and LPD, neither of which managed to pass the 5% threshold necessary for representation in parliament. [...] Since a 60% vote is necessary to override a presidential veto, the government may need occasional help from the leftist LiD.2 Some analysts believe that the elections reflected a tug-of-war between the emerging liberal (i.e., free-market) Poland, embodied by Tusk's PO, and the Poland of "social solidarity," which advocates continued government intervention in the economy represented by PiS. [...] PiS had embarrassed Poland internationally and had wasted precious time and resources in its hunt to expose members of the so-called Uklad - the "web" of former communist elites that the Kaczynski brothers were convinced had manipulated successive governments from behind the curtain since 1989. [...] Some analysts have predicted that the coalition partners might disagree on domestic proposals such as social security reforms and the introduction of a flat tax, and over international issues, such as acceptance of proposed reductions in the EU's Common Agricultural Policy budget.4 Poland's economy is among the most successful transition economies in east central Europe; most of the post-1989 gove.
