Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Corrosion and Preservation of Iron and Steel It has been found a difficult matter to bring a work of this kind up to date. New material, which touches directly, or indirectly, on the corrosion and preservation of iron and steel, is appearing almost daily in the technical press of the world. The authors have made the effort to include or mention the results of all recent investigations and original researches touching on the subject which have appeared up to the time of going to press, even if to some extent the systematic arrangement of the work has had to suffer by frequent insertions. Although a considerable space is given to the description and results of the researches of one of the authors working in a Government laboratory, no material is included from this source that has not already been printed in official bulletins for free distribution to all persons desiring it. While the book is written mainly to elucidate the electrolytic theory of corrosion (which some one has humorously referred to as "The New Thought" in the protection problem), it is nevertheless hoped that it will be found useful and suggestive. even to those to whom the theory does not especially appeal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Iron and Steel Iron is the most important of all the metals that have been pressed into the service of man, which is due, not only to its great abundance in Nature, but also to its unique properties. The result of this is that no one metal has received so much attention from both practical men and scientists, as is shown by the fact that some of the most prominent men in Europe and America are investigating the many chemical and physical properties of the metal and its application to the requirements of civilisation. Thus an enormous mass of information has accumulated, and is to be found in original papers and books. Portions of the subject are still in their youth and are growing vigorously, so that the teacher of to-day must become the student of to-morrow. On the other hand, parts of it are so old that their origin is lost in the mists of time, and dates back to the first glimmerings of that intelligence which now enables man to utilise to the fullest extent the valuable properties of the metal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifty Years of Iron and Steel O have lived during a period of over sixty years of T the world's greatest accomplishment and to have been an eye-witness especially of the great development in this country's iron and steel industry, should be almost glory enough. To have been, during this period, an active factor in this constructive work, at all times taking a leading part in all of the industry's activities, makes the author of this paper a unique figure among American men of affairs - men who have done things. To have been an eye-witness of iron and steel development from the conversion of the first barrel of Lake Superior ore to a period when over sixty million tons come down the Lakes and other millions are smelted in the Upper Lake region, is something few have experienced. To have been connected with the pig iron industry when only six hundred thousand tons were made a year and be still connected with it when nearly forty million tons have been produced in this same period, is an honor that probably no one else can claim. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prehistoric Use of Iron and Steel: With Observations on Certain Matters Ancillary Thereto To reach such height as we have indicated seems the' one proper aim of archaeological research; yet, judging from the character of much work which has been done in the past, the attempts which have been made to probe thus far might be counted on the fingers of one hand. It is palpable from the style of so much of modern Intellectual work, which for most part terminates in the evolution of theories, that it can neither be of permanent value, nor be leading on to recovery of the actual Truth of the world's history; when but a very casual comparison of the theories so evolved, with solid, hard facts (many of which, happily for him who declines to be bound by a theory, still exist, bared to the vision of all who look around with unclosed eye, and mental vision unimpaired), declares such theories to be untenable; while, too, there is abundant indication that we have but to dig deep enough below the surface of things to meet with evidence more stable still. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Corrosion of Iron and Steel The corrosion of iron and steel is one of the leading questions of the day among engineers, metallurgists and manufacturers. Information on the subject is widely scattered and its value is thereby greatly reduced. This essay is based on a paper read before the Engineers' Society of Western Pennsylvania, at Pittsburgh, December 15, 1908, and published in the Proceedings. The work is in great measure a compilation and study of the results obtained by other investi gators and is intended as a compendium of the subject suitable for reference. I am indebted to Mr. Harrison W. Craver for the free use of the extremely valuable bibliography of the subject published by the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, which is reproduced in condensed form at the end of the volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Preservation of Iron and Steel by Means of Passivifying Factors: A Thesis In the tests run at room temperature potassium dichromate reduced corrosion to a marked extent in every case, in some instances preventing all chemical action upon the iron and steel. Thus tanks used for storing non-potable waters at atmospheric temperatures could be well preserved by the addition of small quantities of potassium dichromate. However, with waters in boilers the addition of this compound will, in many cases, serve as a stimulative agent rather than as a preventive for corrosion. This will be seen by studying the data obtained when the iron and steel were placed in solutions free from dichromate at boiling temperature for two weeks and comparing them with the results from those boiled in solutions in which this salt was present. In many of the solutions the presence of the dichromate was occasioned by a slight increase in corrosion. This was especially true in the chloride solutions. In fact, from the general appearances of the test plates, this increase in corrosion seemed greater than that actually repre sented by the following figures. Plates of the iron and steel were introduced into distilled water and subjected to the same treatment as accorded to the samples in the various 'solutions. At the end of two weeks the plates were removed, dried, and weighed. The plates were all slightly tarnished. The gain in weight of the plates served as a standard for calculating the relative corrosion. The test-plates immersed in the salt solutions free from dichromate corroded to a certain extent, a small brown precipitate settling on the bottom of the containing vessel. It was thus impossible to weigh the plates directly and determine the rate of corrosion by gain in weight. The plates, however, were very easily cleaned with ammonium citrate and the loss in weight determined. The equivalent amount of ferric oxide represented by the loss in weight was calculated. While this does not accurately represent the actual amount of corrosive matter produced it is fairly approximate, so that it can be reasonably compared with the data obtained from plates where cleaning was impossible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plain Instructions: To Prepare and Preserve From Rust, Wrought Cast Iron Steel To my friends the public, before the great public, I present myself with homage and respect; and my object for so doing, is to give them information upon a subject which is of immense importance to their interests. To say, that I am going to discourse upon the preservation from Rust, of Iron, Cast Iron and Steel, is to say a great deal; to say Iron, Cast, Iron and Steel can at a very small expense be rendered Rust proof, is to speak volumes to every practical and reflecting mind; yet such is the fact, and I am going to prove it. After more than four years experience and observation in this business in Paris, France, I will relate my views in a plain, unvarnished manner. First, then, I think nearly every article of Iron, Cast Iron and Steel ought to be galvanised; and for the simple reason that it costs so little to do it, and yet when well done it is done for ever; one cent per pound is all they charge in Paris for galvanising articles brought to them, when these articles are of any considerable weight, such for example as pipes for stoves, water pails, locks, spring wire for seats, &c. But before I proceed any further I will state the reason why it costs so little to galvanise, otherwise to zinc Iron, &c. I claim the merit and honor of being the first individual that ever promulgated in this country the knowledge, that sulphuric acid, that has been made use of for refining oils, is the article they use in Paris since about three years, to cleanse the oxyde of the metals, and that it actually answers better than sulphuric acid that costs so much money; it is after the oil refiner has done with it for his use, so that he is glad to be rid of it for nothing; this is precisely the article that does so well to cleanse the oxyde of the metals, thereby replacing an article that costs a great deal, by another which costs simply the carriage of bringing it to the manufactory where it is wanted: this is the first important economy in galvanising Iron: the second is that instead of using sal-ammoniac, which is a very expensive article in the items of galvanising, on account of the very great quantity necessary to be employed; they use in Paris since about three years the coarsest kind of muriatic salt otherwise called muriate d' ammoniaque or sel non sub lime, which does not cost but about half the former in the first instance, and lasts much longer being a stronger bodied article; the economy effected upon these two important articles, reduces the price of galvanising as before stated to one cent per pound. Rosin, lamp oil and other substances have been tried in Paris to endeavor to economise upon this muriate d' ammoniaque or sel non sublime, but nothing as yet has been discovered to succeed so well; it is absolutely necessary whilst galvanising for the zinc to be well and entirely covered with this salt, to prevent it from oxydising. To such an extent is this idea of galvanising or zincing every article carried in Paris; that they even galvanise a course kind of wire work or wire cloth, which is there employed in the place of laths for partition walls: the plaster will adhere readily to it, and besides the advantage of not being scarcely any more expense than laths in the first instance; it will endure fifty times as long; takes no less room; and will not burn as laths do in the unfortunate event of a fire; the finer kinds of wire cloth adapted for sieves in the place of horse hair cloth, answers admirably, is a hundred times more economical than horse hair cloth for this purpose, and the first cost is very little more; this article is likewise galvanised to a great extent at Paris. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Metallography of Iron and Steel While several excellent books on metallography have been published and while numerous papers on the metallography of iron and steel have appeared in the scientific and technical press, a well-balanced, specific, and comprehensive treatise on the subject has not heretofore been written. In the belief that there is a real and urgent need of such a treatise the author has endeavored to supply it, craving for his effort the indulgent criticism of his readers. He offers his book to those seeking self-instruction in the metallography of iron and steel, their special needs having been carefully considered in the arrangement of the lessons; he offers it to teachers and students trusting that they will find it valuable and suggestive as a text-book; he offers it to manufacturers and users of iron and steel in the belief that he has given due weight to the practical side of the subject and has avoided discussions of ill-founded or purely speculative theories; he offers it to the general reader interested in the scientific or practical features of the metallography of iron and steel, as the language used should be readily understood by those lacking specialized knowledge of the subject; he offers it to experts in the hope that they will find it not entirely devoid of original thought, original treatment, and suggestiveness. In the matter of illustrations and especially of photomicrographs the author's aim has been to utilize the best available, using his own or those taken in his laboratory only when no better ones have, to his knowledge, been published by others. The original source of every illustration has been indicated and the author desires to express his indebtedness to the following writers, the figures in parenthesis showing the number of illustrations from each: Andrews (3), Arnold (7), Bayley (1), Belaiew (5), Brearley (2), Carpenter and Keeling (l), Sherard Cowper-Coles (1), Desch (4), Edwards (2), Ewing and Rosenhain (2), Guillet (18), Goerens (9), Gulliver (2), Hall (1), Houghton (1), Kroll (1), Law (8), Levy (1), Longmuir (2), Matweieff (1), Maurer (1), Mellor (1), Osmond (17), Roberts-Austen (1), Robin (1), Roland-Gosselin (1), Rosenhain (2), Saladin (2), Sorby (1), Stead (13), Tschermak (3), Tschernoff (1), Wust (5), Ziegler (1). All illustrations not otherwise inscribed are the author's. The author cannot refrain from expressing here the sorrow and sense of personal loss he experienced when the news was received, while this book was passing through the press, of the death of Floris Osmond, for to the author, as no doubt to many others, Osmond's work and Osmond's life have been an inspiration. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Manufacture and Properties Iron and Steel Some readers might prefer that less space should be devoted to theoretical matter and more to descriptions of apparatus, but in my Opinion the place for such information is in the trade periodicals. It takes so long to print a book that drawings are antiquated when the issue appears, but the fundamental principles of metallurgy remain the same. A book issued in England refers courteously to the former edition of this work, but states that little information is given concerning the practical details of operation. That 'same book sets forth that an open-hearth furnace is charged by putting the pig-iron in first; that in a. Twenty-five-ton furnace not over nine men can be employed, even when there are doors on both sides, and that with rapid work it takes two hours to charge a heat. Now those figures are true for the district with which that writer was familiar, but in America the pig-iron is put in last, while at Steel ton on a furnace of the size mentioned we use twice the number of men and with good scrap finish the work by charging, by hand labor only, in a period ranging from thirty minutes down to eleven minutes. Of equal value is much of the ao-called practical infor mation given in metallurgical treatises. It only remains to thank many friends, both at home and abroad, for aiding in this work which has been accomplished in the intervals of what I trust is not otherwise an entirely idle life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Manufacture and Properties of Iron and Steel I have compared at some length the condition of the industry in each separate country. These descriptions of the various dis tricts or provinces are not intended as complete investigations. It would be impossible for instance to describe the American districts so fully that every engineer and metallurgist of our country would find all the information he might wish, or even find a record of all that he already knows. It would also be impossible to tell an Eng lish engineer much about those parts of his own country with which he is acquainted. It may be possible, however, to give some facts for the benefit of travelers; to clear the way for a foreigner visit ing America, or an American visiting other lands. It 'is for this purpose only that these articles have been written and their end will be accomplished if they furnish certain fundamental facts on which to base such a journey. Some readers might prefer that less space should be devoted to theoretical matter and more to descriptions and drawings of fur naces and apparatus, but in my opinion the place for such informa tion is in the trade periodicals. It takes so long to print a book like this that the drawings are antiquated when the issue appears, and every year that it stands upon the shelf it becomes more and more a catalogue of discarded devices, while on the other hand the fundamental principles of metallurgy remain the same from year to year, and their value knows no depreciation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Iron and Steel in the Industrial Revolution This contribution to the history of the English Iron Industry is the product of the leisure, not of an historian, but of one engaged in teaching economic theory. The materials on which it is based were collected when I was on the staff first of the University of Sheffield, then of the University of Birmingham; but most of the actual writing has been done in Manchester. A generation ago writers on modern economic history found their principal quarry in blue-books, Parliamentary Journals, and other Government records. Hence arose not only an over-estimate of the part played by the State in economic development, but also, perhaps, an unduly gloomy View of former industrial society; for it -is the Pathology, rather than the Physiology, of social life that forms the subject of commissions of enquiry, of Home Office reports, and of parliamentary debates. Within the last few years a small group of scholars has attempted to re-write the economic history of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, using as a basis the surviving records of business undertakings. The University of Manchester already possesses the complete documents of four such concerns, and it is hoped that proprietors of long-established businesses will add to the collection. By so doing they will help to a truer View of the past, and therefore to a clearer understanding of the present. They need have no misgivings Concerning publicity. Houses that have stood the test of a century were not built, shamefully, on sand their foundations will bear scrutiny.
