We say general order, because all of them were under considera tion, if not, discussion, simultaneously. The four-fold chord, which was to bind the three kingdoms in peace and uniformity, was not separately woven in its several strands, and then formed into one - it began as one. Our standards in their sev eral parts grew side by side some, indeed, outgrew others, and came to an earlier maturity, but whether in the blade, or in the bloom, or in the ripe fruit, there was one and the same life moving in all the parts all the time, and they are one organ ically and not mechanically. In the first days of the Minutes with which we are now concerned, it is ordered to report the preface to the Directory and concerning the Sabbath-day. The discussion on the Directory continued till Dec. 30, 1644, when it was ordered that the appendix be sent up to-morrow. What good will the estate now do him? He cannot come into possession. There is a rope about his neck. And there is a halter about our necks. We, too, are under the condemnation of the law. The soul that sinneth it shall die. We have not only come short of the glory of God, in consequence of failure to comply with his law, but we have in curred the penalty which it imposes for disobedience. And just here it is to be noticed that this man Jesus not only obeyed all the precepts, but submitted also to the penalty of the broken law. He was obedient in all things, even unto death. Wherefore God hath highly exalted him. Had he been a sinner he would have continued under the power of death. But God would not suffer his Holy and Just One to see corruption. He rose again from the dead, and is crowned with glory and honor. Had he remained under the power of death, there would have been no salvation for any, for if Christ be not risen ye are yet in your sins. We are begotten again to a living hope by his resurrection from the dead. Here, then, is a man who has earned eternal life by submission to the penalty of violated law. I could cite quite a list, beginning with Fichte, Schelling and Hegel, down to Herbert Spencer, Kuno Fischer, of Heidelberg, and Paul Deussen, of Kiel, and could profess to give outlines of their several phases of Monism from histories of philosophy. But my object is to in struct students who are guided by common sense and their Bibles in the central doctrines of this pretended philosophy which are common to all its phases, and to expose their common errors. No two idealists are consistent with each other, nor even with themselves; hence the attempt to particularize their different schemes would be tedious and hopeless, and would disappoint my practical aim.
