Educational leaders and teachers are tasked with using technology as an approach to forge new ways of thinking, effectively connecting educational content with real-world understanding. This new era of technology-driven teaching and learning includes new skill development and applications of 21st-century technology concepts. The use of technology within educational practice is critical, and understanding how to best prepare future educators for effective technology use will impact future generations of learners. The technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge (TPACK) framework supports educators with effectively integrating technology into their teaching as a way to deepen understanding and mastery of the subject matter. Teacher education programs need to adequately prepare future teachers for effective technology integration into the classroom, as well as to address the gap that exists between future teachers and 21st- century teaching and learning practices. The literature supporting this study examined 21st-century skills and learning, the TPACK framework, and actions currently taking place within teacher education programs supporting technology integration into the teaching and learning environment. This study was a mixed-methods design, including survey responses and focus group interviews. Data were collected from one university and analyzed via the lens of the literature and the theoretical framework of phenomenology. Research findings included preservice teacher candidates feeling adequately prepared for technology integration, based on a combination of preservice teachers' prior knowledge and the preparation and organization of the university faculty. The use of informal mentoring proved important for validation and support of technology use in the teaching and learning environment, and the value of face-to-face instruction for the learning, acquisition, and use of digital tools and resources surpassed digital instruction. Areas for future research include longitudinal studies at multiple universities, the use of the TPACK framework within university-level programs for the instruction of pedagogy and methods courses, single standalone technology course versus an integrative approach to teaching and instruction at the university level, and university partnerships for facilitating and supporting best practices toward technology use for effective 21st- century teaching and learning.

Teachers need to have sufficient knowledge and skills to integrate technology in a lesson. A challenge which pre-service teachers face is not having sufficient knowledge and skills to integrate technology in their teaching practice. This is due to their lack of exposure to electronic resources as well as skills and opportunities to experiment hands-on with educational technology. This study is a module analysis, regarding the preparation of pre-service teachers' for educational technology integration in their teaching practice, at a university. Data was collected through an open ended survey which students had to answer based on their experiences of the module as well as a focus group interview conducted with the lecturers of the module regarding the management of the module. The study is based on the model, Synthesis of Qualitative Data: Preparing pre-service teachers for technology use, utilising the proposals of Jo Tondeur and Johan van Braak. The model states the various factors which need to be taken into consideration when designing a training plan for preparing pre-service teachers for technology use in the classroom. These factors include authentic experience, feedback, role model, reflection, instructional design, collaboration, training staff, access to resources, technology planning and leadership and cooperation within/between institutions. Each of these factors was reviewed, and premises were identified. The results demonstrated that for these factors to be successful, the premises need to be considered. The premises include teaching strategies, peer assessment, resources available, student learning, lifelong learners, technology challenges and learning about technology integration among others. The themes of the conceptual framework paired with the premises were utilized to establish guidelines. These guidelines were be split into two sections, namely; planning a module and preparing preservice teachers for technology use. These guidelines may be adapted to apply to other modules.

Book excerpt: Overall we come away from this project with a renewed sense of the complexity of evaluating the implementation and impact of technology in teacher education. In the post-PT3 period the federal government turned to large-scale experimental and quasi-experimental evaluations of educational technology but these have produced little in the way of understanding what types of technology work in various content areas under various conditions. PT3 and its approach to evaluation can be viewed as the pioneering period of educational technology evaluation in teacher education. It was a time when evaluators were just beginning to develop appropriate standards that could be used as evaluation criteria. It was a time when the accumulated wisdom of the evaluation field with regards to the primacy of mixed methods and multiple indicators of outcomes was just beginning to take hold. PT3 evaluators understood the importance of treading the line between summative and formative evaluation, and the relationship of evaluation to the improvement of educational practice. In a world where the policymakers now clamor for simple quantitative evaluations linking teacher preparation to pupil achievement scores, we are reminded that the causal chain from teacher preparation to in-service performance and student achievement is fraught with externalities, complexities and a less than equal playing field. Collectively we still have not figured out how technology may be adding value to education beyond any potential impact on superficial standardized test scores. We have as a nation, ignored the call of cognitive psychologists who in 2000 called for a new frame of reference for learner-centered, community-centered , assessment-centered and content-centered educational processes. They understood that the high stakes accountability systems hinder educational innovation and the release of technology's potential to unlock new ways of knowing and learning. Looking back now on the accomplishments of the PT3 program within our current political context, we see a need for more nuanced evaluation models that examine the relationship between pedagogy and technology integration, with a realization that teacher preparation programs will vary in their approaches to both. Some will focus on skills-based approaches, others on the relationship between pedagogical content knowledge and technology integration. The PT3 program served as an important incubator and test-bed of appropriate evaluation practice; we are already looking back at the program for lessons on how to move forward. We hope this volume may serve as a reminder of lessons for the future.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to describe the development of mathematics preservice teachers? technology pedagogical content knowledge (TPCK) in a subject specific, technology integrated teacher preparation program. The study also investigated the roles of several influential components of the program and the technology thread throughout the program in supporting preservice teacher development of TPCK. Courses attendances, classroom observations, interviews, questionnaires, classroom artifacts, researcher journal, and preservice teachers? work samples were gathered to explore the progress of the preservice teachers? TPCK during a one year program. Three cases of preservice teachers were purposefully selected to describe the development of their TPCK. Each case consisted of three episodes, prior to the program, during the course work, and during student teaching. Each episode provided the preservice teachers? description about their TPCK in the context of the program. The primary finding was that all three preservice teachers showed various degrees of understanding the four components of TPCK: an overarching conception what it means to teach mathematics with technology; knowledge of instructional strategies and representation; knowledge of students? understanding, thinking, and learning; knowledge of curriculum and curriculum materials that integrate technology in mathematics. The second finding was that the different understanding of those preservice teachers? TPCK affected their practices during student teaching. These preservice teachers? practices of TPCK were categorized into four different levels, accepting, adapting, exploring and advancing. Finally, the study found that the preservice teachers indicated that all the coursework in the program was primarily responsible for the development of their particular levels of TPCK. This finding also provided specific evidence that the technology courses thread in the program was integrated and interconnected throughout the program. Future research recommendations are included for the investigation of: (1) actions the teacher preparation program needs to take for improving on the different levels of preservice teachers? TPCK (2) the relationship of the cooperating teachers, university supervisors, and course instructors? understanding of TPCK on the preservice teachers? TPCK development; and (3) identification of significant relationships between preservice teachers? TPCK during the program and their use of technology in their future teaching career.

Book excerpt: This qualitative study was designed to identify and explore the preservice technology training experiences of novice teachers and examine their perceptions of how well their teacher preparation program prepared them with the knowledge and skills necessary to fulfill the National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS·T). Data were collected by following an instrumental case study design utilizing semi-structured interviews, documents, and field notes. Simultaneous collection and analysis of the data helped the researcher to create a deeper understanding of the technology training experiences of novice teachers. The findings of this study revealed that novice teachers believe there was a lack of emphasis on technology integration in their teacher preparation program outside of the one required technology course. They expressed a need for technology training to be integrated across the curriculum. They wanted to be provided with authentic learning experiences so they could connect the theory to the practice in relation to technology integration. They wanted more time to practice, reflect, and plan student-centered, technology-rich lessons and they wanted to see all teacher education faculty modeling technology so connections could be made between the technology tools and the appropriate uses of these tools within their content areas. Last, they believe future preservice teachers need more hands-on experiences in creating student-centered, technology-rich lessons, not just within the one required technology course, but throughout their teacher preparation program. Furthermore, 90 percent of the participants expressed a need for more exposure to the technology standards. They stated the only place they were exposed to these technology standards was in the one required technology course and felt that one semester was not enough exposure for them to learn how to implement each of the standards with confidence. All stated they would have liked to have seen all faculty members throughout the teacher preparation program incorporate these technology standards into their teaching, so they would have been provided with adequate exposure to the technology standards.
