Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Precursors of Jacques Cartier, 1497-1534: A Collection of Documents Relating to the Early History of the Dominion of Canada In this volume an attempt has been made to bring together for the first time and to render accessible in English form the chief manuscript sources of the earliest history of Canada. The majority of these documents have appeared in print already, but the texts here given have, wherever possible, been either copied from or collated with the original manuscripts. In some few eases facsimiles have been used. The translations are in every case new, and in view of the publication of the original Latin, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese, a somewhat free rendering has been adopted. It has not been considered necessary to translate the French documents. From these sources and from the printed volumes and atlases listed in the appendix has been compiled the introduction. Owing to the fragmentary nature of the material available this is necessarily an incomplete story. Many of the statements in the same are purely conjectural and must be considered as nothing more than working hypotheses. As such it is hoped that they may stimulate the interests or arouse the curiosity of fresh investigators. Should such a result follow, and the narrow bounds of our knowledge of early Canadian history be in consequence extended, one of the main objects of this volume will have been achieved. It is with gratitude and with pleasure that the editor acknowledges the valuable assistance of many friends and scholars. Book Synopsis Early Visions and Representations of America by : M. Carmen Gomez-Galisteo
Download or read book Early Visions and Representations of America written by M. Carmen Gomez-Galisteo and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2012-11-22 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Europeans first arrived in America, they had a number of preconceptions, prejudices, expectations and hopes about what life in the New World would be like. This book examines the different visions and representations of America conveyed in the writings of Spanish conquistador Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca and the Pilgrim leader William Bradford, taking both writers within their respective literary and historical contexts. Anthologies of American literature have consistently ignored Spanish-language achievements on the grounds of a restrictive interpretation of American literature based on linguistic boundaries. Consequently, Spanish-language texts such as Cabeza de Vaca's or the account by the Hidalgo de Elvas, to name but two examples, have been marginalized in the narrative of American literary history. In seeking to redress this neglect, Galisteo contributes to scholarship which seeks to analyze Early America as a whole, including not only Anglo American perspectives but also the Spanish American aspect of the colonization process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Embattled Northeast breaks with established wisdom concerning the dynamics of Indian-white relations. It shows that Euramericans' technological superiority did not undermine the Abenaki's self-confidence, but that trade pushed the tribes toward reaching an alliance among themselves as the first step in dealing with colonials. The study also tells how the Abenaki adapted to the post-contact world in order to secure their lives in religious terms, combining their own religious beliefs with compatible French Jesuit teachings"--Jacket.

Book Synopsis The Overseas Trade of British America by : Thomas M. Truxes
Download or read book The Overseas Trade of British America written by Thomas M. Truxes and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sweeping history of early American trade and the foundation of the American economy In a single, readily digestible, coherent narrative, historian Thomas M. Truxes presents the three hundred–year history of the overseas trade of British America. Born from seeds planted in Tudor England in the sixteenth century, Atlantic trade allowed the initial survival, economic expansion, and later prosperity of British America, and brought vastly different geographical regions, each with a distinctive identity and economic structure, into a single fabric. Truxes shows how colonial American prosperity was only possible because of the labor of enslaved Africans, how the colonial economy became dependent on free and open markets, and how the young United States owed its survival in the struggle of the American Revolution to Atlantic trade.
Book Synopsis Managed Annihilation by : Dean Bavington
Download or read book Managed Annihilation written by Dean Bavington and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Newfoundland and Labrador cod fishery was once the most successful commercial fishery in the world. When it collapsed in 1992, many pointed to failures in management, such as uncontrolled harvesting, as likely culprits. Managed Annihilation makes the case that the idea of natural resource management itself was the problem. The collapse occurred when the fisheries were state-managed and still, two decades later, there is no recovery in sight. Although the collapse raised doubts among policy-makers about their ability to understand and control nature, their ultimate goal of control through management has not wavered and has been transferred from wild fish to fishermen and farmed cod.
