These included the suc culent bunch grass. Oxen were used in teams of five, six and seven yokes and hauled large canvas-covered wagons built for the purpose in Missouri, Wis consin, Illinois and Indiana. In the larger transportation outfits each team hauled two wagons, a lead and a trailer, and frequently were loaded with from to pounds of freight. These teams were driven by men who were as tough and sturdy as the oxen. Most of the freighting was done in the spring, summer and fall, although several dis astrous attempts were made to continue through the midwinter season to relieve food shortages at the army posts. It may seem strange, but it is nevertheless true, that Indians frequently attacked the very wagon trains that were hauling food to them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prairie Schooner: A Story of the Black Hawk War It was Saturday, and the sun marked the hour of noon, when Ned Putnam brought his oxen to a stop beneath a large cottonwood tree, and lifting the yoke from their shoulders, turned them out to graze, fastened at the end of long ropes, a precaution that was hardly necessary, as the oxen showed little sign of straying from the wagon. Two young heifers that were tied behind were likewise picketed, and two great boxes that rode in the rear of the wagon were taken down and placed in the Shade. One of them contained a brood of young pigs, and the other, divided through the middle, had on one Side a half dozen turkeys and geese, - a cock and two hens of each, - and on the other a somewhat larger number of hens and ducks, with a solemn old drake and a big-combed Chanticleer, whose crow had served to start the schooner betimes in the morning. Ned brought water from the lake for the chickens and pigs, and cleaned the cages by detaching the bottoms, allowing the pigs and fowls to play meantime in the sand, which formed a temporary bottom. The wagon furnished meal and grain for their feed, and the scrubbed bottom boards were turned to dry in the sun. Thanks to such care as this the fowls and pigs were in excellent condition, and had come to enjoy their home so much that Ned had sometimes released a portion of his feathered flock at night, catching its members with little difficulty when feeding time came in the morning. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Prairie-Schooner Princess From under the curving top of a canvas-covered "prairie schooner" a boy of about fifteen leaned out, his eyes straining intently across the brown, level expanse of the prairies. "Father," he called, with a note of anxiety in his voice, "look back there to the northeast! What is that against the horizon? It looks like a cloud of dust or smoke." In a second prairie schooner, just ahead of the one the boy was driving, a man with a brown, bearded face looked out hastily, then continued to scan the horizon with anxious gaze. Beside him in the wagon sat a blue-eyed, comely woman with traces of care in her face. As the boy's voice reached her she started, then leaned out of the wagon, her startled gaze sweeping the lonely untrodden plains over which they were traveling. With one com panion and a faithful dog, the veteran Started out. It took nearly two years, but the ox-team journey from Washington, the state, to Washington, our national capital, was finally accomplished. The chief purpose of Mr. Meeker in this enterprise was to induce people to mark the famous old highway. To him it represented a great battle ground in our nation's struggle to win and hold the West. The story of the Oregon Trail, he rightly felt, is an American epic which must be preserved. Through his energy and inspiration and the help of thousands of loyal men and women, school boys and school girls, substantial monuments have now been placed along the greater part of the old pioneer way. Bingham Prize for Debut Short Story Collection Winner of the Raz/Shumaker Prairie Schooner Book Prize in Fiction, the stories in What Isn't Remembered explore the burden, the power, and the nature of love between people who often feel misplaced and estranged from their deepest selves and the world, where they cannot find a home. The characters yearn not only to redefine themselves and rebuild their relationships but also to recover lost loves--a parent, a child, a friend, a spouse, a partner. A young man longs for his mother's love while grieving the loss of his older brother. A mother's affair sabotages her relationship with her daughter, causing a lifelong feud between the two. A divorced man struggles to come to terms with his failed marriage and his family's genocidal past while trying to persuade his father to start cancer treatments. A high school girl feels responsible for the death of her best friend, and the guilt continues to haunt her decades later. Evocative and lyrical, the tales in What Isn't Remembered uncover complex events and emotions, as well as the unpredictable ways in which people adapt to what happens in their lives, finding solace from the most surprising and unexpected sources.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Willa Cather and the Nineteenth Century explores, with textual specificity and historical alertness, the question of how the cultures of the nineteenth century--the cultures that shaped Willa Cather's childhood, animated her education, supplied her artistic models, generated her inordinate ambitions, and gave embodiment to many of her deeply held values--are addressed in her fiction. In two related sets of essays, seven contributors track within Cather's life or writing the particular cultural formations, emotions, and conflicts of value she absorbed from the atmosphere of her distinct historical moment; their ten colleagues offer a compelling set of case studies that articulate the manifold ways that Cather learned from, built upon, or resisted models provided by particular nineteenth-century writers, works, or artistic genres. Taken together with its Cather Studies predecessor, Willa Cather and Modern Cultures, this volume reveals Cather as explorer and interpreter, sufferer and master of the transition from a Victorian to a Modernist America.
