Doubtless the strength and often-implored spirit of my Father in heaven sustained me. But the bitterness of the struggle has long been past. Many a sleepless night, many a secret tear, many a heart ache did it cost me before I could resolve to meet it. They are known to God alone; and I should be most grateful, now that he has conde scended to accept the sacrifice so reluctantly laid upon his altar. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Missionary Work of the Church in the West Among the favorable features are the open mindedness and open-heartedness of our frontier people. The prairie winds and new environment seem to have swept away many of their prejudices; and they are generally willing to give ideas and methods new to themselves a fair consideration and accept them on their merits. Far from the madding crowd and strenuous life of cities, in close communion With nature and With nature's God they are more disposed to entertain and con sider religious matters. Again they are hospitable and generous according to their ability. They think lightly of difficulties, and are extremely hope ful. These characteristics are favorable to the introduction of the Church and her ways. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of a Missionary in the Great West When he could barely walk, I took him to the cathedral one afternoon when I went back for something I had left: after morning service. I left him down in the nave by the door, while I walked up to the chancel. I was busied there for a few moments, and when I turned to go out, he had advanced half-way up the middle aisle, and was standing where the declining sun, streaming through the great painted west window, threw a golden light around his curly head. And a tiny little oh jcet he was in that great, quiet church. It was very still. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Missionary Lieutenant-governors of the North-west and the Punjab. Half a dozen tents on either side formed a short broad street down the middle of a mango grove, with a strip of lawn between and a noble pipal-tree closing in the upper end. On the right of its towering masses of foliage stood the lieutenant-governor's pavilion, the British flag twisting lazily round its pole in the sunshine. The tents of the Secretary to Government, the private secretary, the aide-de-camp, and the officer commanding the escort, were ranged in military line on one side. Of the lawn. The less regular row facing them was made up of the tents of our small District staff, the judge, the magistrate and his assistant, the superintendent of police, and the old doctor with his melancholy flute. A structure of yellow native cloth for mess pur poses and public receptions stood at the head of the little white street, and was connected with the lieutenant-governor's pavilion by a covered way of canvas across the grass. A few clerks, the troopers of the escort, and the servants, had their humble pent-roof encampment behind the pipal tree on the outskirts of the grove. Book excerpt: How God can use one person—limitations and all—to bring thousands to Himself Robert A. Jaffray was a giant among the pioneer missionary statesmen of the early 20th century. Heir to the Toronto Globe, one of Canada's leading newspapers, he turned his back on wealth and power to serve in China. Responsible for an ever-growing work there, he simultaneously opened French Indochina to The Christian and Missionary Alliance. Later he orchestrated the missionary effort in Indonesia, today the largest Alliance field overseas. Jaffray was a missionary general. His keen administration, extensive writing, and incessant strategizing made him a natural leader. Aided by his wife, Minnie, he never let poor health—diabetes and a heart condition—deter him from his work for the Lord. Committed to missions and the people of Southeast Asia to the end, Jaffray died a Martyr in a Japanese prison camp during World War 2. His story serves as an example of how God can use one person—limitations and all—to bring thousands to Himself.

His historical romances of frontier and Indian life in the early American days created a unique form of American literature. Before embarking on his career as a writer, Cooper served in the U.S. Navy as a Midshipman, which greatly influenced many of his novels and other writings. The novel that launched his career was The Spy, a tale about counterespionage set during the Revolutionary War. He also wrote numerous sea stories, and his best-known works are five historical novels of the frontier period known as the Leatherstocking Tales. Among his most famous works is the Romantic novel The Last of the Mohicans, often regarded as his masterpiece.
