Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Practice of Self-Culture The author recently published a book on Cul ture and Restraint, which was a somewhat philo sophical discussion of the two great ideals of self-development and self-effacement, showing the strength and weakness of each and the need for a completer ideal which would include both. Ser vice offers a great reconciling thought which finds room for the two opposing ideals. This present book deals with the practical ways in which the self can be equipped for service. It frankly admits that self-culture is not in itself a complete ideal for human life, but has its place as the necessary education to make a man's contribution to the world worthy. Nothing could be finer as a definition of education than Milton's, I call a complete and generous education that which fits. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Americanized Delsarte Culture His little volume was originally written to meet the demand of those who studied with Miss Dorothy Bishop and myself for a book that should contain the whys, hows, and wherefores of our preliminary course in self-expression and Health culture. Not only former pupils, but unknown friends - physicians, teachers, students and many others - have generously expressed appreciation of its helpful teachings. The desire that this helpfulness may continue and increase has prompted this revision of the book and the insertion of a new chapter, Hints for Study. The suggestions contained in that chapter will, it is believed, make the book more available as a text-book for schools, for classes in physical educa tion and in elocution. A true voice and a natural use of it are impossible if the physical instrument of expression - the body - lacks in power, elasticity and responsiveness. In the Chautauqua School of Expression (chautauqua Assembly, Chautauqua, N. Self-expression and Health culture is found to be an important preparation for higher literary and dramatic interpretation. Book excerpt: This volume brings together scholars in classics, political philosophy, and rhetoric to analyze prudence as a distinctive and vital form of political intelligence. Through case studies from each of the major periods in the history of prudence, the authors identify neglected resources for political judgement in today's conditions of pluralism and interdependency. Three assumptions inform these essays: the many dimensions of prudence cannot be adequately represented in the lexicon of any single discipline; the Aristotelian focus on prudence as rational calculation needs to be balanced by the Ciceronian emphasis on prudence as discursive performance embedded in familiar social practices; and understanding prudence requires attention to how it operates thorough the communicative media and public discourses that constitute the political community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Self-Culture: Intellectual, Physical, and Moral, a Vade Mecum for Young Men and Students 1. In modern times instruction is communicated chiefly by means of Books. Books are no doubt very useful helps to knowledge, and in some measure also, to the practice of useful arts and accomplishments, but they are not, in any case, the primary and natural sources of culture, and, in my opinion, their virtue is not a little apt to be overrated, even in those branches of acquirement where they seem most indispensable. They are not creative powers in any sense; they are merely helps, instruments, tools; and even as tools they are only artificial tools, superadded to those with which the wise prevision of Nature has equipped us, like telescopes and microscopes, whose assistance in many researches reveals unimagined wonders, but the use of which should never tempt us to undervalue or to neglect the exercise of our own eyes. The original and proper sources of knowledge are not books, but life, experience, personal thinking, feeling, and acting. This book was released on 2013-10-11 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The antebellum period has long been identified with the belated emergence of a truly national literature. And yet, as Meredith L. McGill argues, a mass market for books in this period was built and sustained through what we would call rampant literary piracy: a national literature developed not despite but because of the systematic copying of foreign works. Restoring a political dimension to accounts of the economic grounds of antebellum literature, McGill unfolds the legal arguments and political struggles that produced an American "culture of reprinting" and held it in place for two crucial decades. In this culture of reprinting, the circulation of print outstripped authorial and editorial control. McGill examines the workings of literary culture within this market, shifting her gaze from first and authorized editions to reprints and piracies, from the form of the book to the intersection of book and periodical publishing, and from a national literature to an internally divided and transatlantic literary marketplace. Through readings of the work of Dickens, Poe, and Hawthorne, McGill seeks both to analyze how changes in the conditions of publication influenced literary form and to measure what was lost as literary markets became centralized and literary culture became stratified in the early 1850s. American Literature and the Culture of Reprinting, 1834-1853 delineates a distinctive literary culture that was regional in articulation and transnational in scope, while questioning the grounds of the startlingly recent but nonetheless powerful equation of the national interest with the extension of authors' rights.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thorough rethinking of a field deserves to take a shape that is in itself new. Interacting with Print delivers on this premise, reworking the history of print through a unique effort in authorial collaboration. The book itself is not a typical monograph—rather, it is a “multigraph,” the collective work of twenty-two scholars who together have assembled an alphabetically arranged tour of key concepts for the study of print culture, from Anthologies and Binding to Publicity and Taste. Each entry builds on its term in order to resituate print and book history within a broader media ecology throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The central theme is interactivity, in three senses: people interacting with print; print interacting with the non-print media that it has long been thought, erroneously, to have displaced; and people interacting with each other through print. The resulting book will introduce new energy to the field of print studies and lead to considerable new avenues of investigation.
