Book excerpt: While we hear much about the "culture of poverty" that keeps poor black men poor, we know little about how such men understand their social position and relationship to the American dream. Moving beyond stereotypes, this book examines how twenty-six poverty-stricken African American men from Chicago view their prospects for getting ahead. It documents their definitions of good jobs and the good life--and their beliefs about whether and how these can be attained. In its pages, we meet men who think seriously about work, family, and community and whose differing experiences shape their views of their social world. Based on intensive interviews, the book reveals how these men have experienced varying degrees of exposure to more-privileged Americans--differences that ground their understandings of how racism and socioeconomic inequality determine their life chances. The poorest and most socially isolated are, perhaps surprisingly, most likely to believe that individuals can improve their own lot. By contrast, men who regularly leave their neighborhood tend to have a wider range of opportunities but also have met with more racism, hostility, and institutional obstacles--making them less likely to believe in the American Dream. Demonstrating how these men interpret their social world, this book seeks to de-pathologize them without ignoring their experiences with chronic unemployment, prison, and substance abuse. It shows how the men draw upon such experiences as they make meaning of the complex circumstances in which they strive to succeed.

Book excerpt: INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER An urgent primer on race and racism, from the host of the viral hit video series “Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man” “You cannot fix a problem you do not know you have.” So begins Emmanuel Acho in his essential guide to the truths Americans need to know to address the systemic racism that has recently electrified protests in all fifty states. “There is a fix,” Acho says. “But in order to access it, we’re going to have to have some uncomfortable conversations.” In Uncomfortable Conversations With a Black Man, Acho takes on all the questions, large and small, insensitive and taboo, many white Americans are afraid to ask—yet which all Americans need the answers to, now more than ever. With the same open-hearted generosity that has made his video series a phenomenon, Acho explains the vital core of such fraught concepts as white privilege, cultural appropriation, and “reverse racism.” In his own words, he provides a space of compassion and understanding in a discussion that can lack both. He asks only for the reader’s curiosity—but along the way, he will galvanize all of us to join the antiracist fight.

His works treat themes related to the mental world, occultism, divination, psychic reality, and mankind's nature. "THERE EXISTS IN NATURE A DYNAMIC MENTAL PRINCIPLE—A MIND-POWER—PERVADING ALL SPACE—IMMANENT IN ALL THINGS—MANIFESTING IN AN INFINITE VARIETY OF FORMS, DEGREES, AND PHASES. I hold that this energy, or force, or dynamic principle, is no respecter of persons. Its service, like that of the sun and rain, and all natural forces, is open to all—just and unjust; good and bad; high and low; rich and poor. It responds to the proper efforts, no matter by whom exerted, or for what purpose called into effect." (Extract)

Book excerpt: Eight minutes and forty-six seconds. That is exactly how long it took to take the life of George Floyd. And it was on that day that O.C. Mather was born as a writer. Initially outraged and not knowing exactly what to do, he wanted to protest but thought there had to be another way to get involved in what is the closest thing to a Black Power movement in over 50 plus years. O.C began to read, and research, and seek understanding through his history as written by other Black men, faith, his understanding of how the world worked for him as a Black Man for over 50 plus years and he wanted to be part of the movement and make a long term impact on what seemed to be an ongoing narrative for Black People. And that narrative was no matter how far they have come, they still have a long way to go. He decided to write a book about the one thing Black People need more than anything in this world, and that is true freedom to decide their own success and their own destiny. Through a series of essays that he compiled over a six month period, he developed what he calls his Points of Power for the Black Community. The intent of this narrative is to convey the message that Black People have something that is well within their control and that is their own Black Power. It is about rediscovering that which makes them resilient, strong, and powerful people who can do anything they choose once they put their minds to it. It is a primer on different areas that impact their lives daily and tries to push these points through candid dialogue that is a combination of break down, build up and enlighten where necessary. It is his hopes that while he does state the obvious and it is not rocket science, he presents his Points of Power in a way that every Black Man, Woman and young adult child can appreciate and utilize in their quest to be as successful as their own talents and abilities will allow. He is frank, blunt, and encouraging while making sure that he brings common sense solutions to what can seem a complex world to navigate, specifically as an African American. He has combined life lessons learned with stories passed down to him by ancestors and family friends to try to preach, teach and where appropriate, call you on your bulls#!+. The goal is to share his thoughtful insights on what it takes to have Black Power. He asks you to reflect, evaluate, and assess how the thoughts shared in this book can make a difference in your life to attain the Black Power you possess to be your best you. A semi-retired business operations executive and graduate of an HBCU (Historically Black College), Mather wants you to read his book, agree to disagree, discuss with your friends, and then decide how you can best take the nuggets provided to assist you in gaining your Black Power which ultimately is a state of mind.
