Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Gilded Age, when most sculptors aspired to produce monuments, Bessie Potter Vonnoh (1872-1955) made significant contributions to small bronze sculpture and garden statuary designed for the embellishment of the home. Her work commanded admiration for her fluid and suggestive modeling, graceful lines, and sculptural form. In 1904 Bessie Potter Vonnoh won the gold medal for sculpture at the St. Louis World's Fair for bronzes of contemporary American women and children that delighted all who saw them. Although Vonnoh's work is represented today in museums throughout the United States, Bessie Potter Vonnoh: Sculptor of Women provides for the first time an intimate and engaging encounter with one of the most widely respected sculptors of her day. Julie Aronson explores how, by concentrating on sculpture for domestic settings that expertly combined naturalism with elegance, Vonnoh negotiated a male-dominated field to create a pathway to professional success and made high-quality sculpture accessible to a wider audience. In an essay that examines Vonnoh's relationship with her foundries and scrutinizes bronze castings, Janis Conner demystifies baffling issues of authenticity and quality in turn-of-the-century bronzes. This copiously illustrated book, indispensable for all sculpture enthusiasts, accompanies the first exhibition since 1930 dedicated to the art of Bessie Potter Vonnoh.

Book excerpt: In 1919 eight Chicago White Sox ballplayers teamed up with gamblers to throw the World Series to the Cincinnati Reds. The eight players were banned for life from organized baseball for their involvement in or knowledge of the fix, and because of the scandal the players came to be known as the "Black Sox". One of the "Black Sox" was Charles "Swede" Risberg. Swede Risberg came to Minnesota in 1922 with a team called the Mesaba Range Black Sox and he went on to play for Rochester Minnesota in 1923, 1924 and 1926. Swede also played for Scobey Montana in 1925, Watertown South Dakota in 1926 and 1927, Virden Manitoba Canada in 1929, Jamestown North Dakota in 1929 and 1930, and Sioux Falls South Dakota in 1931 and 1932. This book documents the career of Swede Risberg in semi-professional baseball from June 1922 through the 1932 season with the Sioux Falls Canaries. Although this book presents detailed statistical information on Swede's post White Sox career in semi-professional baseball, the book goes beyond a dry accounting of innings pitched, at bats, and hits. Swede played against many different teams and many different individuals. Some of these teams and individuals are themselves interesting stories. Swede would never have played in games against teams with only African-American players or against integrated teams if he had remained in professional baseball, and Swede would not have played on integrated teams if he had remained in the major leagues. Unfortunately, some of the detail about Swede's career in semi-professional baseball is lost forever as newspaper summaries were sometimes not complete, negatives of pictures have been destroyed, and the people that played the games are gone. Even with these limitations, I hope that you enjoy the story of Swede Risberg's life in semi-professional baseball.

Book excerpt: From acclaimed author V.S. Alexander comes an absorbing, immersive novel set during World War I, as a talented and ambitious artist finds an unusual calling. May 1917: The elegant streets of Boston are thousands of miles away from the carnage of the Western Front. Yet even here, amid the clatter of horse-drawn carriages and automobiles, it is impossible to ignore the war raging across Europe. Emma Lewis Swan’s husband, Tom, has gone to France, eager to do his duty as a surgeon. Emma, a sculptress, has stayed behind, pursuing her art despite being dismissed by male critics. On the bustling sidewalk she spies a returned soldier. His brutally scarred face inspires first pity, and then something more—a determination to use her skill to make masks for disfigured soldiers. Leaving Boston for France also means leaving behind Linton Bower, a fiery, gifted artist determined to win her. Emma’s union with Tom has been steady yet passionless, marred by guilt over a choice she made long ago. In Paris, she crafts intricate, lifelike masks to restore these wounded men to the world. But in the course of her new career she will encounter one man who compels her to confront the secret she’s never revealed, not even to Tom. Only by casting off the façade she has worn for so long can she pursue a path through heartbreak and turmoil toward her own unexpected future. . . . Praise for V.S. Alexander’s The Traitor “Alexander brings his signature commitment to historical accuracy to The Traitor, immersing readers in the intrigue of the resistance. Fans of Anthony Doerr's All the Light We Cannot See and Alex Rosenberg's The Girl from Krakow will fall under the spell of this powerfully moving novel.” —Booklist

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America grows older yet stays focused on its young. Whatever hill we try to climb, we're "over" it by fifty and should that hill involve entertainment or athletics we're finished long before. But if younger is better, it doesn't appear that youngest is best: we want our teachers, doctors, generals, and presidents to have reached a certain age. In context after context and contest after contest, we're more than a little conflicted about elders of the tribe; when is it right to honor them, and when to say "step aside"? In Lastingness, Nicholas Delbanco, one of America's most celebrated men of letters, profiles great geniuses in the fields of visual art, literature, and music-Monet, Verdi, O'Keeffe, Yeats, among others - searching for the answers to why some artists' work diminishes with age, while others' reaches its peak. Both an intellectual inquiry into the essence of aging and creativity and a personal journey of discovery, this is a brilliant exploration of what determines what one needs to do to keep the habits of creation and achievement alive.

Book excerpt: Adam Arnett, former Air Force jet-jockey, is a successful business executive, technological pioneer and community leader willing to forfeit prestige, money and power to escape the urban rat race and pursue his dream of the simple life. Ultimately the price is substantially more. A tour of northwestern Maine seems to be the answer, but nearly costs him his life. Betrayals and personal agendas stalk his quest. A gruesome discovery in the backwoods of Maine and a prophetic message from the dead change his course. A bizarre request from a dying judge offers Arnett the golden key to his future. Is Paula, the judge's niece, an erotic artist whose sexuality could be her undoing, be trusted? Could Jessica, the waitress from the nowhere café, who still bares scars of childhood abuse, be a part of Adams future? People in high places bend the rules, but not always for Adam's benefit. There is no question that Arnett fired the gun that killed, making it no simple task for attorney Sampson Curly' Wade to convince a jury that circumstance, not his client, is guilty of the crime for which Adam is charged. Fate renders the final verdict.
