"Graphic novels let you take risks that just wouldn't fly in the conventional book form". This quote by the American professor Karin Slaughter proves that the genre of graphic novels is special and therefore needs more attention. Still, many people have prejudices and think of graphic novels as an embellished term for comics which shows that it is a controversial topic. However, graphic novels are way more than just picture books as they deal with complicated topics and storylines, developing characters and detailed drawings. Reading a graphic novel can be more difficult and challenging as a "usual" book as readers need to engage with the writing and the drawings and connect both in order to create meaning. The curriculum for the subject of English does not clearly state or suggest the usage of comics or graphic novels in the EFL classroom which is probably why the medium finds little to no space in the classroom. However, it's potential in the current competence-oriented curriculum is big as it can nurture the reading and writing competencies, the intercultural and lexical competencies as well as the training of a visual literacy which has never been so important as we are living in a visual world. That is why I will research how using graphic novels in general but also how using the specific graphic novel The Complete Maus by Art Spiegelman in the EFL classroom can improve student's communicative competencies. I picked this book as it is one of the most popular and powerful graphic novels. Spiegelman even received the Pulitzer Prize for his memoir of the Holocaust. In the first part of this work I will focus on the theoretical background of graphic novels and their characteristics as this builds the foundation of this paper. Next, I will continue with the second part of the theoretical background by looking at the competencies of visual literacy and intercultural communicative competence as . In the next and main part of this paper, I will shortly analyze Maus and set my teaching goals before creating a concept for the EFL classroom. The concept will contain specific lesson plans with its material.

There is already a broad variety of Graphic Novels and they enjoy great popularity. As Callahan (2009) puts it, this medium is „exciting, with variety, controversy, diversity and literary merit“. Moreover, the topics range from history and wars via politics to civil rights and also personal issues are picked out as central themes, which could serve as a great advantage in the EFL-Classroom. Additionally, reading is one of the most important skills students need to acquire when they learn a language. Reading comprehension as information processing is a steady act of meaning construction. We are constantly confronted with various reading situations, for example, in every-day life, school, work, leisure or in self-education. Thinking of the question about what can be read, a multitude of reading situations might be enlisted. Here are just a few examples: one can read any kind of book, magazines, newspapers, manuals, subject specific and scientific literature, online-articles, medical instruction leaflets as well as letters and even any signs. Looking at those situations, there are three different functions of reading. First, one might read to get information, for instance, to find out about a specific person by using wikipedia. Second, reading because of psychological-emotional driven intentions, for example, reading a novel that one is interested in. And third, one might read to acquire a foreign language. Anyway, wouldn't it be great to combine at least two of those functions reading a novel in the EFL-Classroom? Students always try to identify themselves with topics and they are self-motivated if they can deal with things they are interested in and that concern them, but at the same time they need to acquire various competencies in the EFL-Classroom. As Graphic Novels fulfil both criteria from my point of view, this paper wants to enlighten this medium more closely. Therefore, I would like to describe the history of Graphic Novels and the term itself first (chapter 2). The third chapter deals with changing times and changing literacies, followed by my fourth part that takes a closer look onto several advantages of using Graphic Novels in the EFL-Classroom. Finally, I would like to sum up the most important aspects in my conclusion.

Book excerpt: The Abolition of War explores the ideas that inform Krzysztof Wodiczko's project The World Institute for the Abolition of War and is a manifesto for the dismantling of what Wodiczko sees as the ubiquitous, unconscious, and ultimately perilous ?Culture of War”, which is embedded within and constantly reaffirmed by our monuments and our historical narratives. In this volume Wodiczko, winner of the Hiroshima Art Prize in 1998, offers a detailed examination of his proposal for The World Institute for the Abolition of War, a projected ?Un-War Memorial” constructed as a structure encapsulating the existing Arc de Triomphe in Paris. Wodiczko is joined by anthropologist Douglas Fry to shed light on the silent but deeply rooted ideologies of war, which permeate our contemporary societies, fuelling current acts of aggression and threatening to erupt into further warfare. Fry's essay ?Abolition of War: An Agenda for Survival” contradicts the generally held assumption that war is an inevitable aspect of human life, and posits new models of global interdependency as the necessary step towards viable peace.
