Book Synopsis The Possessor and the Possessed by : Peter Kivy
Download or read book The Possessor and the Possessed written by Peter Kivy and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of genius intrigues us. Artistic geniuses have something other people don’t have. In some cases that something seems to be a remarkable kind of inspiration that permits the artist to exceed his own abilities. It is as if the artist is suddenly possessed, as if some outside force flows through him at the moment of creation. In other cases genius seems best explained as a natural gift. The artist is the possessor of an extra talent that enables the production of masterpiece after masterpiece. This book explores the concept of artistic genius and how it came to be symbolized by three great composers of the modern era: Handel, Mozart, and Beethoven. Peter Kivy, a leading thinker in musical aesthetics, delineates the two concepts of genius that were already well formed in the ancient world. Kivy then develops the argument that these concepts have alternately held sway in Western thought since the beginning of the eighteenth century. He explores why this pendulum swing from the concept of the possessor to the concept of the possessed has occurred and how the concepts were given philosophical reformulations as views toward Handel, Mozart, and Beethoven as geniuses changed in the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries.

Book excerpt: When the storm rages and the avalanche cuts off power and phone lines, no one in the chalet is particularly bothered. There are kerosene lamps, a well-stocked bar and food supplies more than adequate to last them till the road to Nidenhaut can be opened up. They're on holiday after all, and once the weather clears they can carry on skiing. They do not know, then, that deep within the Swiss Alps, something alien has stirred: an invasion so sly it can only be detected by principled reasoning. The Possessors had a long memory ... For aeons which were now uncountable their life had been bound up with the evanescent lives of the Possessed. Without them, they could not act or think, but through them they were the masters of this cold world.

Book excerpt: Something evil is stalking the streets and underground tunnels of Savannah. It is the result of a century and a half of pent-up hate. Billy Simon will be put to the ultimate test as he battles a wicked entity for the survival of his family and his soul. Only when he uncovers the dark secrets that have been hidden for decades does he begin to realize what he is up against and what he must sacrifice to win. (The following is an excerpt from the book) There was a slight breeze in the thick humid air. Although the air was warm, it still had the effect of giving me a chill. I listened as we walked in silence and could almost hear the sound of someone calling my name ever so softly in the wind. Was it that girl I dreamt about hovering over my bed or was it him? The wind picked up slightly and felt like it was enveloping me with its invisible tentacles. The balmy air should have felt embracing, but instead it felt like moist hate.

Book Synopsis Take It Easy, Vol 1 Talks on Zen Buddhism by : Osho
Download or read book Take It Easy, Vol 1 Talks on Zen Buddhism written by Osho and published by Fivestar. This book was released on 2023-03-07 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion is the vast sky of existence. Reason is a tiny human phenomenon. The reason has to be lost, has to be dropped. Only by going beyond the mind does one start understanding what is. That’s the radical change. No philosophy can bring that radical change – only religion. Religion is non-philosophic, anti-philosophic, and Zen is the purest form of religion. Zen is the very essence of religion. Hence it is irrational, it is absurd. If you try to understand it logically you will be bewildered. It can only be understood illogically. It has to be approached in deep sympathy and love. YOU CANNOT approach Zen through empirical, scientific, objective concepts. They all have to be dropped. It is a heart phenomenon. You have to feel it rather than think it. You have to BE it to know it. Being is knowing. And there is no other knowing.
Book Synopsis The Morphosyntax of Portuguese and Spanish in Latin America by : Mary A. Kato
Download or read book The Morphosyntax of Portuguese and Spanish in Latin America written by Mary A. Kato and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-10-26 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent trends in syntax and morphology have shown the great importance of doing research on variation in closely related languages. This book centers on the study of the morphology and syntax of the two major Romance Languages spoken in Latin America from this perspective. The works presented here either compare Brazilian Portuguese with European Portuguese or compare Latin American Spanish and Peninsular Spanish, or simply compare Portuguese and its varieties with Spanish and its varieties. The chapters advance on a great variety of theoretical questions related to coordination, clitics , hyper-raising, infinitives, null objects, null subjects, hyper-raising, passives, quantifiers, pseudo-clefts, questions and distributed morphology. Finally, this book provides new empirical findings and enriches the descriptions made about Portuguese and Spanish Spoken in the Americas by providing new generalizations, new data and new statistical evidence that help better understand the nature of such variation. The studies contained in this book show a vast array of new phenomena in these young varieties, offering empirical and theoretical windows to language variation and change.
