Book excerpt: CHAPTER I. December 12th, 1747.—My life has been strangely bound up with extraordinary incidents, some of which occurred before I had any connection with the principal actors in them, or indeed, before I even knew of their existence. I suppose, most old men are, like me, more given to looking back upon their own career with a kind of fond interest and affectionate remembrance, than to watching the events—though these may have far more interest for the multitude—immediately passing before their eyes. If this should be the case with the generality of old people, how much more so with me! . . . If I am to enter upon that strange story connected with poor Lucy, I must begin a long way back. I myself only came to the knowledge of her family history after I knew her; but, to make the tale clear to any one else, I must arrange events in the order in which they occurred—not that in which I became acquainted with them. There is a great old hall in the north-east of Lancashire, in a part they called the Trough of Bolland, adjoining that other district named Craven. Starkey Manor-house is rather like a number of rooms clustered round a gray, massive, old keep than a regularly-built hall.

Book Synopsis The Location of Experience by : Adela Pinch
Download or read book The Location of Experience written by Adela Pinch and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2024-10-15 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We tend to feel that works of fiction give us special access to lived experience. But how do novels cultivate that feeling? Where exactly does experience reside? The Location of Experience argues that, paradoxically, novels create experience for us not by bringing reality up close, but by engineering environments in which we feel constrained from acting. By excavating the history of the rise of experience as an important category of Victorian intellectual life, this book reveals how experience was surprisingly tied to emotions of remorse and regret for some of the era’s great women novelists: the Brontës, George Eliot, Margaret Oliphant, and Elizabeth Gaskell. It shows how these writers passed ideas about experience—and experiences themselves—among each other. Drawing on intellectual history, psychology, and moral philosophy, The Location of Experience shows that, through manipulating the psychological dimensions of fiction’s formal features, Victorian women novelists produced a philosophical account of experience that rivaled and complemented that of the male philosophers of the period.

Book Synopsis The Poor Clare by : Elizabeth Gaskell
Download or read book The Poor Clare written by Elizabeth Gaskell and published by Melville House. This book was released on 2013-08-13 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A departure from the stories Elizabeth Gaskell wrote for Charles Dickens’s Household Words magazine, The Poor Clare is a dark, gothic novella of thwarted love and a family curse that vividly illustrates the social tensions of Victorian England. The purposeful slaying of lonely Bridget’s beloved dog unleashes a torrent of rage that surges down through the generations. In her desire for revenge, Bridget utters a fearsome curse upon the dog’s killer: All that the murderer loves most, he will lose. This haunting story of “the sins of the father being visited upon the children” brilliantly shows off Gaskell’s pioneering understanding of the tensions between Catholics and Protestants, and the harsh realities of class society. The Poor Clare stands as an innovative and exciting gem in Elizabeth Gaskell’s oeuvre.

Download or read book Fallen Women in the Nineteenth-Century Novel written by T. Winnifrith and published by Springer. This book was released on 1993-11-08 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tom Winnifrith examines how the great nineteenth-century novelists managed to say something new and important about sexual behaviour in spite of rules which dictated that the recording of this behaviour should combine the utmost discretion and deep disapproval. On the surface their fallen heroines seem to suffer the conventional cruel fate of the erring female: death or Australia or both. Tom Winnifrith examines ways in which the great novelists continued to portray the complexities underlying the simple division of women into angels and whores.

Download or read book Elizabeth Gaskell written by Angus Easson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-22 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1979, this book looks at every aspect of the life and work of Elizabeth Gaskell, including her lesser known novels and writings — especially those concerning life in the industrial north of Victorian England. It shows how her work springs from a culture and society which pervades all she thought and wrote. An opening chapter explores her religion, culture, friendships and family. The major works are considered in turn and background material relevant to the novels’ industrial scenes is presented. The process of literary creation is charted in material drawn from letters and by examination of the manuscripts. Her short stories, journalism and letters are also considered.
