Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2002: Numerous reports have identified the serious problems of under-representation of, and discrimination against, minority ethnic groups in the British NHS. It is widely argued that this both raises issues of social justice and undermines the quality of service to minority ethnic patients. Nowhere are these problems more acute than among the largest occupational group in the NHS - nurses. This book reports the results of research carried out for the English National Board for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting to evaluate NHS equal opportunities policy. Drawing on additional original research involving interviews with key policy actors, this fascinating book examines the prospects for a national strategy linking the business and justice cases for the delivery of greater equity in employment and service delivery.

The books aim to engage with a broad audience, aiming at new ‘laicized’ paradigms of understanding, capable of being shared with a wider international public. This series of books is committed to the premise that racism and all other forms of negative prejudice are detrimental to a harmonious and healthy pluralist world society, and that it is the duty of all good democratic citizens to combat them, but that there are many valid routes by which such prejudice can be challenged, and that there are other kinds of prejudice and abuse which must also be combatted. This is the third volume in a series of four books, dedicated to a re-examination of cultural diversity and its implications for education and schooling.

Download or read book Racial Inequality in Schools written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of considerable progress on racial equality issues and multicultural education made in the schools of the United Kingdom, many areas of disadvantage remain for ethnic minority students and some new ones have emerged. Quite apart from the moral and educational imperatives behind policies against racism, there are legal implications for schools that neglect these areas of concern. The duties of local authorities under the Race Relations Act of 1976 are outlined. Suggestions are also made for things classroom teachers can do to promote racial equality in the whole school. In addition to their role in making whole-school policy, teachers can do much in specific subject areas to enhance equality for all students and combat racist behavior and assumptions. Some ideas are offered for various subject areas. Sensitivity to the languages and culture of students is needed, and educational establishments can take a leading role in the whole area of equal opportunities. (SLD)
