Book Synopsis French and English Polyphony of the 13th and 14th Centuries by : Ernest H. Sanders
Download or read book French and English Polyphony of the 13th and 14th Centuries written by Ernest H. Sanders and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-29 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998, this volume brings together the most part of the author’s work on medieval polyphony. The most significant advance in music during the period in the High Gothic was the development of a system of rhythm and of its notation, the modern understanding of which was to a considerable extent obscured by an undue emphasis on the so-called rhythmic modes. The investigation of this topic forms the centre of this book, and a related essay deals with rhythmic Latin poetry. Other pieces survey the accomplishments of Europe’s first great composer and the flourishing of the medieval motet, whose rise he stimulated, while several essays focus on English polyphony, and on what remains of the motets of Philippe de Vitry, a major figure in Parisian intellectual circles of the 14th century.
Download or read book Ars antiqua written by EdwardH. Roesner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ars antiqua began to be mentioned in writings about music in the early decades of the fourteenth century, where it was cited along with references to a more modern "art", an ars nova. It was understood by those who coined the notion to be rooted in the musical practices outlined in the Ars musica of Lambertus and, especially, the Ars cantus mensurabilis of Franco of Cologne. Directly or indirectly the essays collected in this volume all address one or more of the issues regarding ars antiqua polyphony-questions relating to the nature and definition of genre; the evolution of the polyphonic idiom; the workings of the creative process including the role of oral process and notation and the continuum between these extremes; questions about how this music was used and understood; and of how it fits into the intellectual life of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Some of the essays ask new questions or approach long-standing ones from fresh perspectives. All, however, are rooted in a line of scholarship that produced a body of writing of continuing relevance.

Download or read book The Jeu d'Adam written by Christophe Chaguinian and published by Medieval Institute Publications. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jeu d'Adam is an Anglo-Norman mid-twelfth-century representation of several biblical stories, including the temptation of Adam and Eve and the subsequent fall, Cain and Abel, and the prophets Isaiah and Daniel. Its framework builds on the Latin responses of the mass during the liturgical season of Septuagesima, from before Lent to Easter. This collection of essays explores whether this early play was monastic or secular, its Anglo-Norman character, and the text's musical provenance.

Book Synopsis The Polyphony of Saint Martial and Santiago de Compostela: Text by : Theodore Karp
Download or read book The Polyphony of Saint Martial and Santiago de Compostela: Text written by Theodore Karp and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theodore Karp proposes a fundamental reinterpretation of two major repertories of twelfth-century sacred music, that associated with the long-destroyed abbey of Saint Martial de Limoges and the manuscript preserved in the Cathedral Archive of Santiago de Compostela. Together, these comprise the most important collection of polyphonic music before the celebrated School of Notre Dame. Scholars have disagreed about the rules for transcribing this early medieval music. Karp's commentary in Volume One, along with an edition of the music in Volume Two, offers a new set principles for the understanding of its harmony, rhythm, notation, and text underlay. Professor Karp's interpretation, though likely to prove controversial, is scrupulously and convincingly defended. The transcriptions themselves will be welcomed by performing musicians, to whom an important repertory now becomes readily available.
