Book excerpt: James Lane left a lasting impression on Kansas and American politics of the 1850s and 1860s. As a partisan during the violent years of Bleeding Kansas before the American Civil War, he was an ardent opponent of slavery and a proponent of Kansas statehood as a free state. He was one of the first senators from Kansas. Passionate, fiery, and dedicated to causes, when war came, Lane served the Union cause as a general. He raised the Kansas Brigade of volunteers, which was disbanded after Lane was severely criticized for the sacking of the town of Osceola. This raid became novelized in a story that formed the basis of the movie, "The Outlaw Josey Wales." In 1862, U.S. Senator Lane recruited the 1st Regiment Kansas Volunteer Infantry (Colored). William Quantrill's Raiders made a raid on pro-Union Lawrence, Kansas with the intention of capturing or killing Lane. He escaped through his cornfield. After fighting in the Mexican War, the Civil War, and the battles in Kansas, Lane's controversial life came to a sad end when he committed suicide in 1866. This story of his life is told by his friend, John Speer. For the first time, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. Book excerpt: As the life of U.S. senator James Lane unfolded on the Kansas frontier, so did his saintly and dastardly deeds. Some called him a murderer while others affectionately called him a good politician. Carefully preserving the character of the misunderstood senator, this book tells the untold and largely forgotten story of the controversial Civil War-era figure. James H."the Grim Chieftain" Lane was the most powerful politician west of the Mississippi River during the Civil War. Born in 1814, he spent his early life in military service during the Mexican War and he eventually entered into a life of politics. At the age of thirty-one, Lane spent his earnings to run for a seat in the Indiana legislature. Although his attempt was unsuccessful, he didnt have to wait long before taking the first of many offices as the lieutenant governor of the State of Indiana, a position he won by a single vote in 1849. From there, his career took him along an aggressive path that led him to Kansas as he argued for popular sovereignty during the states formation. Early on, he gained a reputation as a fanatic who was responsible for leading Kansas into the Civil War. In a series of controversial and compelling chapters, Collins illustrates a long line of federal patronage, which served as the senator's power base from which he drew upon allegiance and loyalty. Tragically, Lane's life ended ten days after he put a revolver in his mouth and pulled the trigger. The lost story of Jim Lane will interest anyone seeking a historical perspective of "Bleeding Kansas."

J. H. Lank. The report of the military board referred to is signed: J. H. Lane, President; A. D. Richardson, Assistant Adjutant General; J. G. Cleveland, Samuel Jameson, Geo. S. Hillyer, Samuel Walker, Brigadier Generals; J. Fin Hill, Inspector General; Hiram Housel, Com. General; and S. B. Prentiss, Surgeon General. We do not propose to go into an investigation of the allegations of Lane as to the homicide with which he charges him; but if Lane was mistaken in his characteristics, James Buchanan and Jefferson Davis were also mistaken in the selection of the man for their purposes. If Lane was guilty of any conduct in his official position unwarranted by the organic act, Denver had ready access to a willing court, for a writ of quo warranto, and had no excuse for infringing upon judicial powers. The President knew that he had the reputation of a fighting man, and "acknowledged the code," and selected him for these qualities. The legislature which selected Lane knew alike the caliber of their man, and the man he had to confront. It was war, not peace; and had been war from the very outset of the attempt to force acts of usurpation upon the people. CHAPTER XIII. THE LEAVENWORTH CONSTITUTION. The situation in Kansas when Gov. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No person excited greater emotion in Kansas than James Henry Lane, the U.S. senator who led a volunteer brigade in 1861–1862. In fighting numerous skirmishes, liberating hundreds of slaves, burning portions of four towns, and murdering half a dozen men, Lane and his brigade garnered national attention as the saviors of Kansas and the terror of Missouri. This first book-length study of the “jayhawkers,” as the men of Lane’s brigade were known, takes a fresh look at their exploits and notoriety. Bryce Benedict draws on a wealth of previously unexploited sources, including letters by brigade members, to dramatically re-create the violence along the Kansas-Missouri border and challenge some of the time-honored depictions of Lane’s unit as bloodthirsty and indiscriminately violent. Bringing to life an era of guerillas, bushwhackers, and slave stealers, Jayhawkers also describes how Lane’s brigade was organized and equipped and provides details regarding staff and casualties. Assessing the extent to which the jayhawkers followed accepted rules of warfare, Benedict argues that Lane set a precedent for the Union Army’s eventual adoption of “hard” tactics toward civilians. An entertaining story rich in detail, Jayhawkers will captivate scholars and history enthusiasts as it sheds new light on the unfettered violence on this western fringe of the Civil War.
