Book Synopsis Movie Comedians of the 1950s by : Wes D. Gehring
Download or read book Movie Comedians of the 1950s written by Wes D. Gehring and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-11-03 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1950s were a transitional period for film comedians. The artistic suppression of the McCarthy era and the advent of television often resulted in a dumbing down of motion pictures. Cartoonist-turned-director Frank Tashlin contributed a funny but cartoonish effect through his work with comedians like Jerry Lewis and Bob Hope. A new vanguard of comedians appeared without stock comic garb or make-up--fresh faces not easily pigeonholed as merely comedians, such as Tony Randall, Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis. Some traditional comedians, like Charlie Chaplin, Red Skelton and Danny Kaye, continued their shtick, though with some evident tweaking. This book provides insight into a misunderstood decade of film history with an examination of the "personality comedians." The talents of Dean Martin and Bob Hope are reappraised and the "dumb blonde" stereotype, as applied to Judy Holliday and Marilyn Monroe, is deconstructed.

His career is treated in detail, from his obvious early talent to the creation of his acting personae and his sad professional and personal decline before his death in 1987. Lacks a bibliography. Book Synopsis Kvetching and Shpritzing by : Joseph Dorinson
Download or read book Kvetching and Shpritzing written by Joseph Dorinson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-10-15 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jewish humor, with its rational skepticism and cutting social criticism, permeates American popular culture. Scholars of humor--from Sigmund Freud to Woody Allen--have studied the essence of the Jewish joke, at once a defense mechanism against a hostile world and a means of cultural affirmation. Where did this wit originate? Why do Jewish humorists work at the margins of so many diverse cultures? What accounts for the longevity of the Jewish joke? Do oppressed people, as African American author Ralph Ellison suggested, slip their yoke when they change the joke? Citing examples from prominent humorists and stand-up comics, this book examines the phenomenon of Jewish humor from its biblical origins to its prevalence in the modern diaspora, revealing a mother lode of wit in language, literature, folklore, music and history.

Book excerpt: The year is 1859. In this sequel to Point of the Circle, readers are catapulted into suspense filled pages. The author once again introduces you to Joaquin and Rue. In Spain where family positions and title are almost a form of worship, there are those who will and have done anything to keep or acquire the persona of perfection. In a twist of fate, old friends unite, enemies are recognized, and the pursuit for justice is resurrected; revenge is only a touch away. All manner of business is on the minds of the characters; how to obtain more without giving away too much, how to cheat and not get caught, and if caught how to escape. As greed, secrets, and deception prevail; romance hangs in the air like grapes on the vine. However, as in justice, revenge, and business, there are those who win and those who lose. How much is won or lost depends on the depth that each person is willing to go.
