Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry is like confetti in a strong wind. Much of its substance is dispelled as soon as it passes by our senses. The sad reality is that it often leaves much to be desired and even less to hold and cherish. The breaths of anticipation are the wishes and needs that stem from discovering a book, which may answer those deeply held frustrations for which there have been no optionsand often no solutions either. This book does not claim to provide any of the truths, which we all avidly seek, but only to impart some comfort in their reading that will alleviate those needs in other ways. Opened at any page at any time, a vista of change will reveal itself to you that will, at the very least, grant you a new level of awareness of the promises that good poetry can bring to you. Simple peace of mind and pleasure can be yours, and what more can you ask of life?

Book excerpt: This is a book that began life as the vaguest thread of a simple idea without much of any real or intentioned substance that might have given it any real purpose or any perceivable direction. It is a book about the author’s own perceptions and ideas about how existence might still maintain of this life when material existence no longer has any immediate relevance for its continuing perpetuation. It has, however, evolved since that time into a serious exercise in expressive writing but with the primary emphasis directed always toward literary coloration and an attempt at imaginative dexterity. We exist today within a maelstrom of questionable misconceptions that remain convenient to our particular life moments and to which we all religiously adhere as the necessary requirement of our accustomed conditioning, with the basic tenet of que sera enabling us all to more comfortably maintain our daily lives in the manner that is most fitting to our purpose. This little effort began as a project based on an entirely hypothetical concept—the merest product of a rampant imagination. It is in no way intended as a statement of any of the popular convictions or beliefs that prevail today but is offered instead simply as a work of fiction and as little else. It does, however, express the sympathies and inclinations of the writer in the direction of his own thoughts and of his own suspicions. We all appear to be comfortable with our own philosophical concepts regarding the perpetuity of our own existences, and why should that not be the case? It might be helpful, however, particularly for those seekers of life questions to take a long look into the eyes of a new born child and explore some of the solutions to those mysteries that are lying there waiting to be discovered.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set in Jewish London in the 1930s, Susan Glickman's The Violin Lover is written against the backdrop of Hitler's escalating campaign against the Jews. This beautifully written novel tells the story of Clara Weiss and Ned Abraham, "the violin lover," brought together by Clara's 11-year-old son, Jacob. A successful doctor and amateur violinist, Ned is pressured to practice a duet with Jacob by the boy's piano teacher. Though reluctant at first, Ned is charmed by the young prodigy and surprised by Jacob's dedication and passion for music. In him Ned sees his younger self, so young and full of promise. A friendship is soon built on a mutual love for music. A dinner invitation to spend Passover with the Weiss family seals Ned's fate and a clandestine love affair begins. Although they both agree that no one must ever know -- especially not Clara's family -- their affair inevitably comes to a crashing end, with disastrous, life-altering consequences. Unfolding like a melody, The Violin Lover is infused with music and told in three voices. It is a powerful novel about the love one feels for family, friends, culture, faith and music, and the passion that comes with it -- regardless of the outcome.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a book as joyous and painful, as mysterious and memorable, as childhood itself. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings captures the longing of lonely children, the brute insult of bigotry, and the wonder of words that can make the world right. Maya Angelou’s debut memoir is a modern American classic beloved worldwide. Sent by their mother to live with their devout, self-sufficient grandmother in a small Southern town, Maya and her brother, Bailey, endure the ache of abandonment and the prejudice of the local “powhitetrash.” At eight years old and back at her mother’s side in St. Louis, Maya is attacked by a man many times her age—and has to live with the consequences for a lifetime. Years later, in San Francisco, Maya learns that love for herself, the kindness of others, her own strong spirit, and the ideas of great authors (“I met and fell in love with William Shakespeare”) will allow her to be free instead of imprisoned. Poetic and powerful, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings will touch hearts and change minds for as long as people read. “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings liberates the reader into life simply because Maya Angelou confronts her own life with such a moving wonder, such a luminous dignity.”—James Baldwin From the Paperback edition.

Book excerpt: In March 1953, four women meet in Room 408 of Moscow’s deluxe Hotel Metropol. They have gathered to reminisce about Vladimir Mayakovsky, the poet who in death had become a national idol of Soviet Russia. In life, however, he was a much more complicated figure. The ladies, each of whom could claim to have been a muse to the poet, loved or loathed Mayakovsky in the course of his life, and as they piece together their conflicting memories of him, a portrait of the artist as a young idealist emerges. From his early years as a leader of the Futurist movement to his work as a propagandist for the Revolution and on to the censorship battles that turned him against the state (and, more ominously, the state against him), their recollections reveal Mayakovsky as a passionate, complex, sexually obsessed creature trapped in the epicenter of history, struggling to hold onto his ideals in the face of a revolution betrayed. Written by Robert Littell, whom The Washington Post called “one of the most talented, most original voices in American fiction today, period,” The Mayakovsky Tapes is an ambitious, impressive novel that brings to life the tumultuous Stalinist era and the predicament of the artists ensnared in it.

Book excerpt: From one of our most accomplished writers: the reputation-making debut short story collection that paved the way for a new generation of writers. • “Brilliant … Phillips is a virtuoso.” —The Chicago Tribune Jayne Anne Phillips's reputation-making debut collection paved the way for a new generation of writers. Raved about by reviewers and embraced by the likes of Raymond Carver, Frank Conroy, Annie Dillard, and Nadine Gordimer, Black Tickets now stands as a classic. With an uncanny ability to depict the lives of men and women who rarely register in our literature, Phillips writes stories that lay bare their suffering and joy. Here are the abused and the abandoned, the violent and the passive, the impoverished and the disenfranchised who populate the small towns and rural byways of the country. A patron of the arts reserves his fondest feeling for the one man who wants it least. A stripper, the daughter of a witch, escapes from poverty into another kind of violence. A young girl during the Depression is caught between the love of her crazy father and the no less powerful love of her sorrowful mother. These are great American stories that have earned a privileged place in our literature.
