Selected Poems, Translation & Introduction Paul Smith FUZULI (1494-1556). Fuzuli (pen-name means 'perfect'). His contemporaries called him the 'prince of poets', but he spent his life torn between impossible dreams of travel and glory and a relatively mundane daily routine. He wrote many qasidas in honour of potential patrons, but it is in his intensely mystical gazels and other poetic forms in Azeri-Turkish, Persian and Arabic and his masterpiece version of Leyla and Mejnun (in gazels, mesnevis and qasidas) that his great fame rests like Hafiz (perhaps the greatest influence on him) as a poet who combined successfully the praising and understanding of human and divine love and the fusing of them. In the true Sufi tradition he saw in human love as a bridge to the Divine. He also wrote of theology, medicine, ethics and astronomy. In three Divans of gazels, qasidas, roba'is, qit'as and other forms in Azeri-Turkish, Persian, and Arabic bear witness to his genius that has not diminished over time. Introduction on The Life & Poetry & Times of Fuzuli, The Forms of Poetry Used by Fuzuli, Sufis & Dervishes: Their Art & Use of Poetry. Selected Bibliography. Two Appendixes on his Life, Poetry & Influence then & now. The true rhyme-structures & beauty, power & meaning of these poems has been achieved. Large Print (14pt) & Large Format (8"x10") Edition. 212 pages. COMMENTS ON PAUL SMITH'S TRANSLATION OF HAFIZ'S 'DIVAN'. "It is not a joke... the English version of all the ghazals of Hafiz is a great feat and of paramount importance. I am astonished." Dr. Mir Mohammad Taghavi (Dr. of Literature) Tehran. "Superb translations. 99% Hafiz 1% Paul Smith." Ali Akbar Shapurzman, translator of many works in English into Persian and knower of Hafiz's Divan off by heart. "Smith has probably put together the greatest collection of literary facts and history concerning Hafiz." Daniel Ladinsky (Penguin Books author). "Perfect Translation." Readers and researchers will find information pertaining to archaeology, geography, art history, ethnology, sociology, economics, religion, philosophy, mysticism, science and medicine, international relations, and numerous other areas of study. Many of the entries are enriched with material from Turkish and Persian primary sources written by courtiers, authors, and historians who were present at the time of major military campaigns or other important events in Ottoman history. These and other annotated primary documents will give students the opportunity to analyze events and will promote critical thinking skills. The language used throughout is accessible and based on the assumption that the reader is not familiar with the long, rich, and complex history of the Ottoman state.

Book excerpt: THE LAST THREE TURKISH SUFI MASTER POETS Alisher Navoi, Fuzuli & Niyazi Misri SELECTED POEMS Translation & Introduction Paul Smith Alisher Navoi (1441 - 1501) was a Sufi poet, politician, linguist, scientist, author, calligrapher, art-patron, intellectual, painter, builder. He is generally known by his pen name Navoi ('the weeper'). He was among the key writers who revolutionized the literary use of the Turkic languages. Fuzuli (1494-1556)... (pen-name means 'perfect') combined successfully the praising and understanding of human and divine love and the fusing of them. In the true Sufi tradition he saw human love as a bridge to the Divine. His Divan bears witness to his genius that has not diminished. Niyazi Misri (d. 1694) It is obvious from many of his poems that at some time in his life he became a Perfect Master (Qutub) a God-realized soul. Although Niyazi wrote a good deal of prose his poetical work is confined to his Divan, which is restricted to gazels and qasidas. Included in the Introduction: Life and Times and Poetry of each Poet, On the poetic forms they used, On Sufism in Poetry, God-Realization & God-Intoxication. Selected Bibliographies of each poet. This is the largest selection of all their poems translated into English. Correct rhyme-structure has been kept and meaning of these powerful, spiritual, immortal poems. Large Print (14pt) & Large Format (7" x 10") Edition. Pages 318 Paul Smith (b. 1945) is a poet, author and translator of many books of Sufi poets of the Persian, Arabic, Urdu, Turkish, Pashtu and other languages... including Hafiz, Sadi, Nizami, Rumi, 'Attar, Sana'i, Jahan Khatun, Obeyd Zakani, Nesimi, Kabir, Anvari, Ansari, Jami, Khayyam, Rudaki, Yunus Emre, Lalla Ded and many others, as well as poetry, fiction, plays, biographies, children's books and screenplays. amazon.com/author/smithpa

Book excerpt: The third volume in this ground-breaking series, Persian Narrative Poetry in the Classical Era, 800-1500: Romantic and Didactic Genres, introduces masterpieces of Persian literature from these seven centuries to an international audience. In the process, it underlines the remarkable tenacity of their malleable tradition: the perennial dialogue and the interconnectedness which binds together a vast and varied literature composed of many threads, romantic and didactic, in many lands, from Anatolia and Iran to India and Central Asia. In its companion volume, Persian Lyric in the Classical Era, 800-1500, the readers of the series will have already met in passing all the mythical and historical figures who appear with far more aplomb on the stage here, with their lives narrated in detail by poets of different caliber from different perspectives. The first two chapters of this volume recount the literary history of the entire period, focusing on didactic and romantic narratives. The central chapters take a closer look at the towering figure of the poet Nezâmi Ganjavi. The final chapter takes the reader to a wider landscape tracing the footsteps of Alexander across the globe, offering insights to the cultural preoccupations refracted in so many versions past and present.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annemarie Schimmel, one of the world's foremost authorities on Persian literature, provides a comprehensive introduction to the complicated and highly sophisticated system of rhetoric and imagery used by the poets of Iran, Ottoman Turkey, and Muslim India. She shows that these images have been used and refined over the centuries and reflect the changing conditions in the Muslim world. According to Schimmel, Persian poetry does not aim to be spontaneous in spirit or highly personal in form. Instead it is rooted in conventions and rules of prosody, rhymes, and verbal instrumentation. Ideally, every verse should be like a precious stone--perfectly formed and multifaceted--and convey the dynamic relationship between everyday reality and the transcendental. Persian poetry, Schimmel explains, is more similar to medieval European verse than Western poetry as it has been written since the Romantic period. The characteristic verse form is the ghazal--a set of rhyming couplets--which serves as a vehicle for shrouding in conventional tropes the poet's real intentions. Because Persian poetry is neither narrative nor dramatic in its overall form, its strength lies in an "architectonic" design; each precisely expressed image is carefully fitted into a pattern of linked figures of speech. Schimmel shows that at its heart Persian poetry transforms the world into a web of symbols embedded in Islamic culture.

Book excerpt: Caught in a Whirlwind: A Cultural History of Ottoman Baghdad as Reflected in its Illustrated Manuscripts focuses on a period of great artistic vitality in the region of Baghdad, a frontier area that was caught between the rival Ottoman and Safavid empires. In the period following the peace treaty of 1590, a corpus of more than thirty illustrated manuscripts and several single page paintings were produced. In this book Melis Taner presents a contextual study of the vibrant late sixteenth-century and early seventeenth-century Baghdad art market, opening up further avenues of research on art production in provinces and border regions.
