Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Plant World, Vol. 4 The peculiar power, mentioned above, of the parts of the plant which face the rising sun is repeatedly referred to, and to the same class of facts belongs this, that the root of Smilax China, which God created here, plucked when the moon is on the increase, is an even better remedy for pains, tumors, etc., than the celebrated Palo de China, which rots the bones. Let them that do not believe this take from the sepulchre one who has been cured by the Palo de China and they shall see all his bones rotted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Plant World, Vol. 5 The Garden, as now improved, includes approximately forty-five acres, devoted to a formal flower garden, various synopses of botanical or economical significance, a fruticetum, an arboretum, and a moderate sized range of houses, some of old model and others of recent construc tion in accordance with the present practice in plant-house building. The planting in these divisions the Garden is in part formal, in part natural, and, while the transitions are not always satisfactory, the ex treme representations of the two methods are fairly successful. In the plant-houses, in addition to ranges furnished with, staging, which is best suited to the growth and display of certain kinds of plants, other ranges are devoted to representative collections of a homogeneous character, planted out in as natural a way as may be. There are, for instance, a fern house, a tree-fern tower, an acacia house, a yucca tower, and a cactus house, in which the impression produceable by each of these classes of plants is accentuated by the natural manner in which they are grown. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plant World, 1908, Vol. 2: A Monthly Journal of General Botany In a previous paper* attention has been called to the fact that, since the evaporating power of the air to a great extent controls the rate of water loss from plants, this climatic factcir plays a prime role in inhibiting the growth of many forms in arid regions. It was shown that a number of plants fail to develop normally during the dry season at Tucson, Arizona, although the soil in which they are rooted is kept approximately at its optimum water content. The purpose of the present paper is to call attention to the fact that the evaporating power of the air also appears to play an import ant part in the determination of the vegetation Which can best succeed in different but neighboring habitats in the same region. Some of the swamps included in the area continued to burn for about two months in spite of several rains. To walk in one of the burnt swamps after the fire was out, was like tramping in the snow; the ashes were ankle deep and soft and fine. Many red maples two feet in diameter had fallen. There were also a few trees of other kinds. Their roots had been burned and a strong north wind, that came later, had blown them down. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Plant World, Vol. 2 Countless blossoms of the Odorous wild Roses fill the gulches and ravines; plants that are only a few inches high may be found sport ing several flowers, while the hedge-forming bushes are covered with buds and blossoms, in all the possible shades of red, and its variegation with white. Here also are found Old friends in the blue Spiderwort, appearing in its true form like a veritable immense spider; the yellow four-o'clock; and Larkspurs, lo'ng sprays Of the blue and white, like those Of the Old-fashioned gardens, but much more beauti ful. High on the banks are white clouds Of scented petals from the wild Plum and Cherry, the Thimbleberry and the Raspberry. Climb ing among these trees and shrubs are seen interlacing the Clematis and wild Hops in blossoming garlands Of white and green, forming trellises, arbors and bowers innumerable, hanging strands and fes toons from one side Of the path to the other, swaying amid the breeze and keeping time to the cadence Of the mountain streams. The Cacti have been in bloom for some time, and we must not pass them by; in fact it would be impossible, as they are everywhere and are apt to make themselves felt severely if not noticed. It is indeed fortunate if on our strolls we return without one or more of their sharp spines having penetrated our shoes and entered the flesh, there to prove themselves long sought for, hard to find and decidedly pain ful. The Cacti are at their best upon the prairie, especially after a dry, hot spring; it seems incredible how little moisture they require. A plant has been known to have been kept in a tin box all fall and winter with hardly a drop of water; in fact it had been forgotten, yet it flourished and bloomed during the summer months. The Prickly Pear cactus is found on the prairie, on the hillsides, in the gulches, high upon the cliffs, hanging on by its long tough roots; its large fleshy joints and brilliant blossoms hanging down along the sides Of the precipice. The joints are thickly studded with sharp needle-like spines Of white; these are Of a poisonous nature and are capable Of causing considerable pain and irritation, if after having entered the flesh, they are accidentally broken Off and allowed to remain there. Among these guarding swords nestle the buds and blossoms and later the fruit, the prickly pear proper, dark red in color and somewhat re sembling a plum in shape. To the southward, where it grows con siderably larger, it is found to be quite a tempting edible. Both the bud and fruit are generously endowed with close-set clusters Of fine hair-like spines; these are even more painful than the larger ones, be ing mostly so very small as to remain unnoticed, but certain to be felt and hard to extract. The blossoms are large and Of three shades of color; there is a dull yellow, and a rich golden-hued, but the most beautiful of all is the golden-petaled with a brilliant crimson centre. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Plant World, Vol. 1 As the ferns and conifers can be most advantageously studied elsewhere, we shall take up the higher division of the flowering plants, known to botanists as Angiosperms, the name signifying plants which produce their seeds in a closed cavity called the ovary. The Angio sperms are divided into two great sections, each of which may be easily recognized, and which are of such importance that their names and characteristics should be memorized. Where they are no longer quite suitable they will be briefly elucidated; and, when the conceptions to which they refer have been expanded or limited, the Old established names will also be taken in a wider or a narrower sense as the case may be. New expressions will only be introduced where their use is productive of greater clearness and distinctness in the ideas involved; and even these additions must be in harmony with the terms already in existence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Glimpses at the Plant World Dear Children, - I hope these little talks about a few of the many wonderful and beautiful things in the plant-world will help you to see and understand some things about you that you have not yet noticed. When I was a little girl, I lived in the country and spent a great deal of time in the woods and fields. I had so many happy days among the wild-flowers! I did not always know their names, but I knew the little plant-folks themselves, and knew the very spot where I was to look for this or that particular kind.
