Download or read book Jews and Feminism written by Laura Levitt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-05 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By interrogating America's promise of a home for Jews as citizens of the liberal state, Jews and Feminism questions the very terms of this social "contract". Maintaining that Jews, women, and Jewish women are not necessarily secure within this construction of the state, Laura Levitt links this contractual construction of belonging and acceptance to legacies of marriage as a contractual home for Jewish women. Exploring the immigration of Jews from Eastern Europe for America, as well as their desire to make this country their permanent home, Levitt raises questions about the search for stability in specific Jewish religious and cultural traditions which is linked to the liberal academy as well as feminist study, thus offering an account of an ambivalent Jewish feminist embrace of America as home.

Book excerpt: Imagine your typical Christian teenage girl: she attends church twice a week, summer camp every year, and has grandparents who preach, but she just doesn't get it. Think about that same girl who hears over again what is morally acceptable. Her friends party, date, even sleep around, and that's all she wants to do. But deep down inside she knows they are wrong and she ultimately ends up confused. In walks Brett. He is charming, good looking, and definitely loves Jesus. He loves God in a way that Honey has never seen before. And then there is Trevor. He believes in God too, but the same way as Honey. As we read through Honey's story we watch how God unfolds a glorious revelation of Himself to her. And we rejoice with her as she discovers more about God through His revelation. It's a beautiful story of life and love the way a simple teenage girl tells it, and not only do we applaud God as He helps her through each struggle, we rejoice with her on her way towards her own personal victory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A judge advocate general officer chronicles her experiences working as a lawyer for the US Army overseas in the Iraq War from 2003 to 2004. Several people are waiting to greet Captain Vivian Gembara when she returns home after a year-long tour of duty in Iraq—her grateful fiancé and two officers dispatched from headquarters to retrieve “the file.” Certainly not the homecoming she expected, but such is life when you are in the business of soldiers behaving badly. As a lawyer for the US Army, Vivian counsels them, investigates them, and when necessary, prosecutes them. When an Iraqi teenager’s body is found floating in the Tigris River and US soldiers are believed to have been involved, she knows she has a case on her hands. What she doesn’t realize is just how much that case will reveal about the Army’s conduct at war. Drowning in the Desert:A JAG’s Search for Justice in Iraq is both a legal thriller and a searing account of the savagery that occurs when commanders place “the fight” above all else. Praise for Drowning in the Desert “This is an honest account of one officer struggling to return with honor from early in the Iraq war when the U.S. Army didn’t understand how to fight it.” —Thomas E. Ricks, author of Fiasco: The American Military Adventure in Iraq “A fascinating true story with all the intrigue of a bestselling mystery novel.” —Donald P. Bellisario, creator of the hit TV series JAG and NCIS

Book Synopsis My Mountain Top Experience with God by : Sara Caul
Download or read book My Mountain Top Experience with God written by Sara Caul and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-11-21 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was Black Friday. We went to Tysons mall early that morning to do our Christmas shopping. We? I had traveled to Maryland to be with my husband's family for their annual Thanksgiving celebration. His mother, father, all his brothers and sisters and their children were there, including our children. He was the only one absent. Supposedly he had to work this Thanksgiving but would join us Thursday night, then he fell asleep after work and would join us Friday morning before going to the mall. Leaving the mall around five, he was a no-show, so I made a conscious decision to go home once we got to my sister-in-law's house. I packed our things, left my two oldest girls, and got on the highway heading home. I stopped to get gas thirty to forty miles down the road. My sons, five and ten, were all buckled up; I had my bedroom shoes on. Taking a left out of the service station, I was heading home. One mile, two miles, this road was now very narrow, icy, and snow had accumulated from the weather earlier that day. Leveling off at an elevation of 4,200 feet, we started down this mountain. Two hundred feet we stared in disbelief at a twenty-five-foot white gate stretched across the snow-covered road.

Book Synopsis Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers by : Philip Schaff
Download or read book Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers written by Philip Schaff and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2007-05-01 with total page 713 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Council of Nicaea in 325 AD marked the beginning of a new era in Christianity. For the first time, doctrines were organized into a single creed. The Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers did most of their writing during and after this important event in Church history. Unlike the previous era of Christian writing, the Nicene and Post-Nicene era is dominated by a few very important and prolific writers. In Volume VIII of the 14-volume collected writings of the Nicenes and Post-Nicenes (first published between 1886 and 1889), readers will find Saint Augustines extensive treatment of the Psalms. Augustine took this book from the Old Testament and wove into it the revelation of Jesus as the savior of humanity. Through the skill of Augustine, it seems as though the Psalms had been written by an oracle who knew that eventually the messiah would come and wrote to pave the way. This volume is a valuable reference book for any Christian wishing to have the psalms illuminated and explained."

Book Synopsis Holistic Happiness by : Robert P. Vande Kappelle
Download or read book Holistic Happiness written by Robert P. Vande Kappelle and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-06-23 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the founders of the US republic make clear in the Declaration of Independence, human beings have an unassailable right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. While the meaning of these "unalienable rights" is debated, it is clear that these rights are interrelated. Concerned with these "rights," Holistic Happiness focuses on happiness, defining the purpose of life as achieving and maintaining happiness "conducive to the equitable flourishing of all." To this end, happiness should not be confused with pleasure, which is momentary and transitory, for happiness is not so much a feeling as an attitude, associated with what we call achieving meaning and purpose in life. Properly understood, happiness can be achieved, but only by inner discipline, requiring a transformation of one's outlook, attitude, and approach to life. As this book emphasizes, good health is an important foundation for happiness. However, to experience and maintain good health requires good genes, a balanced lifestyle, supportive companions, wholesome eating and drinking, regular exercise, a positive mindset, an active disposition, and good fortune. While happiness and good health are frequently disrupted by accidents, disease, stress, chemical and emotional imbalance, and numerous other factors, wellness is achievable and sustainable, but it needs balanced input from an individual's four constituent dimensions: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. In this regard, this volume is a resource for individuals seeking holistic happiness. While benefitting from recent scholarly research, Holistic Happiness is unique in content and conception and is useful for individual or group study. Each chapter concludes with questions suitable for discussion or reflection.
