Book excerpt: “His book tells about many of the graves of Revolutionary War and Civil War soldiers, as well as the early pioneers and those who settled the county.” —Cleveland.com The dead do not always rest in peace. Occasionally, they wind up in the backyard. As towns grew in Cuyahoga County during the late 1800s, many of its cemeteries were relocated to make room for urban sprawl. But not all of these graves made the journey. Author William G. Krejci tracks down more than fifty displaced cemeteries throughout the Greater Cleveland area. Discover the Revolutionary War veterans, famous scientists and illustrious dignitaries found beneath gas stations and grocery stores in this eerie history of Cuyahoga County’s forgotten dead.

Today downtown Cleveland towers over this peaceful plot of land, which has remained essentially unchanged since it was opened as a burial ground in 1826 at the far edge of the town, whose population was only about 800 at the time. Within the cemetery are the graves of soldiers who served in the Indian Wars, the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Civil War, the Mexican War, and the Spanish-American War, and it is the last resting place of many of the citys early leaders and pioneer families.

Book excerpt: Woodland Cemetery, the second-oldest cemetery in Cleveland, was named after a romantic description of an unseen Cleveland that was part of a popular 1803 pastoral poem, The Pleasures of Hope, by Scottish poet Thomas Campbell. Its 60 acres provide a primer on American cemetery design, from the "rural cemetery" intricacies of the 1850s to the more rambling style of the late 19th century to the rectangular 20th-century grid. Its mausoleums are designed in Classical, Victorian, Egyptian, and Richardson rustic styles. These varied structures--along with angels, obelisks, and military memorials--are symbolic of the residents resting within the gates.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Review of Riverside Cemetery Association: Cleveland, Ohio The high hopes and expectations expressed in our prospectus, issued at the inception of the Riverside enterprise, have been more than realized. Its phenomenal success has passed into and become a part of the proud history of our city. It is therefore with feelings of no little satisfaction that the Trustees, many of whom are among the founders, present this review of the history of the Riverside Cemetery Association, representing the progress of an enterprise which in a little more than a decade has become the pride of our citizens. Touching the inception of the Association, preceding any legal public action, there is an unwritten history, and between each line of recorded history there is an unwritten line, telling of anxious hopes and fears, of severe struggles and many discouragements. This undertaking, as many will vividly recollect, was no exception to the rule incident to the experience of men who embark in like enterprises. Riverside was the legitimate offspring of necessity. The Trustees of the city Cemeteries had reported the pressing need of additional grounds, urging the municipal authorities to take immediate action in the premises. The city had recognized the necessity, and by resolution had appointed a special committee to report a suitable location. But before any definite action had been taken, private enterprise had relieved the city of the heavy burden of taxation necessary to the successful accomplishment of the object. Founded in 1869, this garden cemetery served as an escape and a model for Cleveland parks and suburbs, such as University Circle, Little Italy, East Cleveland, and Cleveland Heights. Lake View is home to cultural, economic, and political leaders and thousands of others from all classes, races, and religions. This rich diversity is manifested in the natural and man-made landscape, which features the President James Garfield Monument, the Wade Chapel, and the John D. Rockefeller obelisk.

Established in 1876, Riverside Cemetery was the long-term solution to the ever-growing suburbs of Cleveland's west side. A nephew to one of the earliest settlers, Titus Brainard sold 102.25 acres of his farm to the association under conditions that the cemetery never be sold to the city and that all persons be accepted for burial regardless of background. And so began the development of the landscape and roadways, much of which has changed in the nearly 150 years of service. Riverside Cemetery has become the permanent home to generations of families, each with their own stories, accomplishments, hardships, and journeys that we strive to capture in this book. Jamie Lynne Owens is a fifth-generation staff member of Riverside Cemetery and has committed herself to the historic preservation of the cemetery. William G. Krejci is a local historian and author whose special interest in Riverside Cemetery lies within his interest of early cemeteries of the Western Reserve, with Riverside's garden-like setting being one of the greatest examples. Images found in this book are from the archives of Riverside Cemetery, Cleveland Public Library, Western Reserve Historical Society, and the Library of Congress as well as original work of photographer Deb Zimmerman.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lake View Cemetery, founded in 1869, was modeled after the great garden cemeteries of Victorian England and France. Over 107,000 individuals are interred on the sprawling 285 acre expanse that is located four and one-half miles from Cleveland's Public Square. According to an 1870 Plain Dealer report, the cemetery was designed to combine all the attractive features that "nature and true art can produce" to harmonize nature's alphabet--"stone, earth, wood and water." The landscape was laid out with broad avenues and shady walks "near the fountains in view of many a rustic pile [edifice] and quiet grave and stately monument." The cemetery became the burial place for many of Cleveland's prominent citizens including James A. Garfield, John D. Rockefeller, and J. H. Wade. Cleveland photographer Barney Taxel has spent over a decade, during all seasons, exploring the stunning landmark. The culmination of the personal project is this collection of over two hundred of his creations that reveal the spirit and essence of the Lake View Cemetery. Not only are images of the famous Garfield monument and the Wade Chapel captured, but so are the artistic splendors of the landscape, stonework, and memorials. To provide context, the book also includes a history of the Lake View Cemetery based on archival research.
