Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pioneer, Vol. 1: Consisting of Essays, Literary, Moral and Theological; February, 1812 Though printed in separate volumes, they are in fact an extended selection of similar pieces, which, how ever they may difi'er in subject or style, are clothed in language equally difficult. The gradation consists rather in the subject, than the expression. Upon the whole, it may be doubted whether the defect incident to the first steps of reading, has in any considerable degree been remedied by the selections of Mr. Mur ray. A complete set of class books, occupying their distances in due proportion, are still wanting as a de sideratum in the study of the English language. Too rapid and unequal strides in the art of reading, are equally discouraging to the pupil, and vexatious to the teacher. The more minute and regular the grad dation, the pleasure and improvement will be in pro portion. It is much to be wished that a'judicious se lection of class books, occupying an easy, yet strong ly marked gradation, were produced - That this, amidst the splendid profusion of useful and elegant learning of the moderns, has been so long wanting, is not more surprising, than the possession of 'it would be beneficial. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since ancient times, men and women have dreamed of soaring among the stars, but only in this century has that dream been realized. In Rockets into Space, Frank Winter tells the fascinating story of the modern launch vehicle, from the mythological musings of the Babylonians and Greeks to the present-day reality of manned and unmanned space flight. In concise yet comprehensive chapters dense with anecdotal detail, Winter tracks the theoretical formulations and technological breakthroughs that have charted the evolution of rocket propulsion and vehicle design. He pays particular attention to the remarkable contributions of pioneers Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, Robert Goddard, Hermann Oberth, Eugen Sänger, and Sergei Korolev, whose genius and vision paved the way for later innovation. He describes the clandestine development of the V-2 rocket in Germany, under the technical leadership of Wernher von Braun, and its dramatic impact on postwar rocket research and satellite development in the United States and the Soviet Union. He also chronicles the complex events of the last three decades, which have produced ever more sophisticated rockets capable of launching larger payloads, from weapons to weather and communications satellites. Finally, he surveys exotic propulsion systems--nuclear, electric, solar, photon, laser--that lie on the frontiers of science today but that will shape the spaceflight and space policy decisions of tomorrow. Rockets into Space is an authoritative, entertaining guidebook for all who are interested in the history of space travel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Omegan, Vol. 1: December, 1924 It is the duty of the college or university to develop the moral and intellectual life of its students. It is useless for a man to go into the world anticipating success it all he has gotten from col lege is a degree and the ability to get along with people. True success cannot easily be attained by the college graduate unless he has a source of information upon which he can draw, a tounda tion upon which he can build a rich intellectual life, and a will that will enable him to put across what he attempts. It is the duty of a fraternity in any institution of learning to do all in its power to carry out the purpose of the institution in the lives of its members. The local chapter should provide ample opportunity for its members to learn how to deal with men. It should most certainly not fail in its task to see that every student secures enough social polish to deal with any type of humanity with ease and grace. It is above all the duty of every fraternity in every institution to develop its members morally and intellectually. It should inspire in them higher ideals and purposes. It should pro vide for them an environment in which they can live up to these ideals, and-ih Which they can fulfill their purposes. It should help them to get a real sense of moral values. A fraternity should never fail to impress upon its members that the chief aim of every man should be service to his fellows. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York City witnessed a dazzling burst of creativity in the 1920s. In this pathbreaking study, Carol J. Oja explores this artistic renaissance from the perspective of composers of classical and modern music, who along with writers, painters, and jazz musicians, were at the heart of early modernism in America. She also illustrates how the aesthetic attitudes and institutional structures from the 1920s left a deep imprint on the arts over the 20th century. Aaron Copland, George Gershwin, Ruth Crawford Seeger, Virgil Thomson, William Grant Still, Edgar Varèse, Henry Cowell, Leo Ornstein, Marion Bauer, George Antheil-these were the leaders of a talented new generation of American composers whose efforts made New York City the center of new music in the country. They founded composer societies--such as the International Composers' Guild, the League of Composers, the Pan American Association, and the Copland-Sessions Concerts--to promote the performance of their music, and they nimbly negotiated cultural boundaries, aiming for recognition in Western Europe as much as at home. They showed exceptional skill at marketing their work. Drawing on extensive archival material--including interviews, correspondence, popular periodicals, and little-known music manuscripts--Oja provides a new perspective on the period and a compelling collective portrait of the figures, puncturing many longstanding myths. American composers active in New York during the 1920s are explored in relation to the "Machine Age" and American Dada; the impact of spirituality on American dissonance; the crucial, behind-the-scenes role of women as patrons and promoters of modernist music; cross-currents between jazz and concert music; the critical reception of modernist music (especially in the writings of Carl Van Vechten and Paul Rosenfeld); and the international impulse behind neoclassicism. The book also examines the persistent biases of the time, particularly anti-Semitisim, gender stereotyping, and longstanding racial attitudes.
