Book excerpt: In this slapstick, illustrated crime adventure, the honest Theo Pincher who doesn't fit in to his family of criminals finds a clever way to save the family dog, Sherlock, from the nasty new police officer. The new police officer Clive is not nice--even the other police are afraid of him. Everything, even the dog, must have a receipt to prove there's no stealing going on. Things without receipts are locked up. Of course, Theo's family don't have a receipt for anything, especially not their dog Sherlock. When Sherlock is caught, Theo makes a plan to get him back using cooking oil, a dog onesie, and cunning--a plan so good that it reveals Clive's true identity and gives him the comeuppance he deserves. Even Theo's family are impressed. This criminally funny tale contains a break-in at the candy store, an interrogation, and a super-smart plan--with comical commentary from the dog, who thinks his name is Shuddup Sherlock. Praise for The Pinchers: "If you are looking for a goofy, good fun beginning chapter book reader series, pinch this book. Criminally good writing, illustrations, and design."--Jon Scieszka, US National Ambassador for Young Peoples Literature "Ingenious, well-written and with absolutely wonderful illustrations. We enjoy stories where we both giggle and nod thoughtfully . . . . Criminally good!" Crimetime Award for Children's Detective of the Year 2022

He had just finished sanding a ten-foot section of wooden rail, and he was dipping the hog's hair brush into the varnish when he heard the sound of a young woman's voice calling his name. He had dreamed about meeting a beautiful woman in such a place. "So you live on a boat," she said. "Oh, we have got to see that." Varnish doesn't pine, so he kept his brush moving along the boat rail. Something in her voice reminded him of his Missouri farm girl cousins. "Open the hatch, go on down, and look around if you want," he told her. "Let me get the lid on this varnish and clean the brush, and then we can talk." This story began with his audacious mother, a hard-drinking Arkansas farm girl. She fled her second marriage, and she took Skipp with her to Kentucky. Skipp and Lola's story emerge as they travel throughout the Midwest United States, and he changed from a Missouri farm boy to a "surfer- wannabe" on the Florida east coast. Conflicted, the surfer man-child traveled between the east and west coasts, unsettled, looking for the right reasons to stay. Unbeknownst to him, both he and his mother were pursued by the Hound of heaven, and it wasn't until he acted upon his Bible reading that he made the connection that would lead him to the kingdom that could not be shaken.

Book excerpt: "It's hard to imagine the child—story-lover or fact-lover, dog-lover or not—who would not be drawn in by this book."—The New York Times Book Review How did dog become man’s best friend? Dogs come in such a variety of shapes, sizes, and breeds, that it is hard to believe that they all have a common ancestor--the wolf! Hudson Talbott takes readers on a fascinating journey through history to see how wolves’ relationships with humans sparked their development into the dogs we know and love today. Striking paintings, from an adorable wolf pup to a wide range of modern-day dog breeds, illustrate this insightful story of teamwork and friendship. Through the eyes of a prehistoric boy and a lone wolf pup, we see how the bond between our ancestors and these wild animals may have developed. Starting as enemies competing for food, the wolf and the boy realize that they’ll eat better and be safer if they team up. Over time, others catch on, and as many of the wolves become more domesticated, the humans breed them for skills like hunting, herding, pulling, and rescuing. And today, there are more breeds of dog than of any other animal, all thanks to this relationship that started so long ago.

Book excerpt: This book details the true stories of the authors and her husbands many dogs and catsfrom Lizzie, who loved to be dressed up as a witch and give out Halloween treats--to Lucky, whose life was saved just in time--to Anton, who survived distemper, a disease that kills many dogs and cats. All of the animals featured in this book came from animal rescue groups and shelters, with most of them coming from out-of-state kill shelters. For the most part, these animals had problematic behaviors, and were adults, except for the two puppies, Lucky and Anton. Some of these animals growled as their main form of communication to both humans and dogs alike and many of the male dogs marked or were incontinent indoors. Most of the animals needed obedience and leash training, and some dogs exhibited aggression over food, toys, and space. The growling, marking, lack of obedience to basic commands, absence of leash training, and aggressive tendencies all had made these otherwise good-natured animals unattractive to potential and first-time adopters. Another issue that surfaced was the fact that black animals are often overlooked or even avoided by adopters. The chapter, entitled Ashley, the Black Dog, addresses this unfortunate and widespread prejudice toward black dogs and cats. The author found that it was extremely rewarding to adopt rescue dogs. Although they were difficult at times, she found them to be interesting, challenging, and loveable. She also felt that they had taught her a lot about how to handle dogs with their particular problems. The author also loved adopting the less complicated dogsthe ones who just eat, play, sleep, and lick your handlike Ashley, Lucky, Pooky, and Gumby. These dogs may not have been the most intelligent dogs, but because of their gentle natures, they got along well with, and balanced out, the authors more difficult and aggressive dogs.

In this sweeping portrait of grief, Debra recounts the story of the little blind dog that was responsible for the complete transformation of her life along with the events brought on by the aftermath of her death. Unable to cope with Curly’s death, Debra’s obsession to be reunited with her beloved dog catapults her into a world of mystery and intrigue: a world where certain knowledge remains hidden until one is ready and prepared to understand it, a covert world that is hard to access unless you’ve done the painstaking work required to open the doors to its secrets. Grappling with an ever deepening depression and a complete lack of will to live, Debra begins her search for the answers to life’s toughest questions. But to receive the answers she so desperately desires requires a tradeoff, and she must ultimately face her OWN death to get them.
