However, the chosen one is the one who sees only one thing in beauty: the Beauty itself ” said one of the most famous English poets, writers, playwrights, a bright and inimitable Oscar Wilde (1854-1900). Oscar Wilde is the author of not only the world famous novel “Portrait of Dorian Gray”, but also of beautiful fairy tales combining the rich imagination of the writer and the ironic style of narration. They sing the beauty of good deeds, sympathy for the offended and humanity. Wilde is also famous for such works as “Puffy Rocket”, “Infanta’s Birthday”, “Nightingale and the Rose”, “Princess’s Birthday”, “Faithful Friend”, “The Prince and the Swallow”, “The Egoist Giant”. “The Canterville Ghost” is about a family who moves to a castle haunted by the ghost of a dead nobleman, who killed his wife and was starved to death by his wife’s brothers. The home of the Canterville Ghost was the ancient Canterville Chase, which has all the accoutrements of a traditional haunted house. Descriptions of the wainscoting, the library panelled in black oak, and the armour in the hallway characterise the setting. Wilde mixes the macabre with comedy, juxtaposing devices from traditional English ghost stories such as creaking floorboards, clanking chains, and ancient prophecies. Illustrated by Nataly Ger.

Book excerpt: Ever since its explosive publication in 1890, Oscar Wilde's Gothic treatise on decadence, sin, and corruption has been subject to scandal and intrigue. Revised and censored multiple times during Wilde's tragically short life, it is presented here in its original, un-muted form, complete with redacted phrases and sentences that would later be used against Wilde at his trials for homosexuality. Beyond its salacious subtext, however, is a rich and philosophical parable on morality -- one as powerful as a sermon but as sensually entrancing as an opium cigarette -- which slyly undermines its presumed thesis of hedonism with a heartbreaking appeal to human decency. Dorian Gray's transformation from innocent object of a shy painter's platonic lust to heartless, corrupting lady-killer with dozens of ruined lives, murders, and suicides on his conscience is etched into his soul without leaving a blemish on his lovely face. But as Wilde reveals throughout his hypnotic, Faustian novel, vanity, arrogance, and a lack of compassion may make for an indulgent life without regrets, but the devil will have his due. Annotated and illustrated, this critical edition of Wilde's deeply personal ode to corruption also includes his satricial ghost story, "The Canterville Ghost," the mysterious parable, "The Sphinx Without a Secret," and his black-comedy thriller, "Lord Arthur Saville's Crime."

Though the former owner, Lord Canterville, warns Mr. Otis that the mansion is haunted, Mr. Otis is not worried and replies that ghosts do not exist. Soon after, Mr. Otis moves into the Chase with the rest of his family: his wife, Lucretia; his eldest son, Washington; his fifteen-year-old daughter, Virginia; and his two young twin boys. Upon moving in, Mrs. Otis notices a dull red stain on the floor and requests that it be cleaned. Their housekeeper reveals that it is a bloodstain from the murder of Lady Eleanore de Canterville, who was killed in 1575 by her husband, Sir Simon de Canterville, and that it cannot be removed. She warns Mrs. Otis that Sir Simon's guilty ghost still haunts Canterville Chase. Dismissing the housekeeper's story as nonsense, Washington quickly pulls out a container of Pinkerton's Champion Stain Remover, scrubbing it onto the spot until the stain is gone. As soon as the stain is removed, lightning flashes and a peal of thunder rocks the house. The housekeeper faints in terror.

"The Canterville Ghost" is a parody featuring a dramatic spirit named Sir Simon and the United States minister (ambassador) to the Court of St. James's, Hiram B. Otis. Mr. Otis travels to England with his family and moves into a haunted country house. Lord Canterville, the previous owner of the house, warns Mr. Otis that the ghost of Sir Simon de Canterville has haunted it ever since he killed his wife, Eleonore, three centuries before. But Mr. Otis dismisses the ghost story as bunk and disregards Lord Canterville's warnings. When the Otises learn that the house is indeed haunted, they succeed in victimizing the ghost and in disregarding age-old British traditions. What emerges is a satire of American materialism, a lampoon of traditional British values, and an amusing twist on the traditional gothic horror tale.

The other characters include the Canterville Ghost, the Duke of Cheshire (who wants to marry Virginia), Mrs Umney (the housekeeper), and Rev. Augustus Dampier. At first, none of the Otis family believe in ghosts, but shortly after they move in, none of them can deny the presence of Sir Simon de Canterville . The family hears clanking chains, they witness reappearing bloodstains "on the floor just by the fireplace," which are removed every time they appear in various forms. But, humorously, none of these scare the Otis family in the least. In fact, upon hearing the clanking noises in the hallway, Mr Otis promptly gets out of bed and pragmatically offers the ghost Tammany Rising Sun Lubricator to oil his chains.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: EXCEPTIONAL COLLECTION UNABRIDGED EDITION This edition contains within an only book, the greatest masterpieces by Oscar Wilde. The Picture of Dorian Gray, Wilde's only novel, is the eerie fable of Dorian Gray, a naive and irresistible young man, who sells his soul for eternal youth and beauty. He becomes steeped in sin, but his face remains perfect - while only his portrait, locked away, reveals the blackness of his soul. The tale of Dorian Gray's moral depravity caused a scandal when it first appeared in 1890, confronted with the rigid morality of the Victorian era. The Canterville ghost and other stories is a collection of five short stories first published in 1891. An American family buys a haunted castle in England from Lord Canterville, where creaking chains and blood stains have been terrorizing the area for centuries... But how can a poor ghost frighten pragmatic people? The other four short stories - Lord Arthur Savile's crime, The sphinx without a secret, The model millionaire, The portrait of Mr W.H. - are extraordinary stories which also mix mystery and humor and make a witty dissection of Victorian society. Arguably the greatest farcical comedy in English, The Importance of Being Earnest, made a triumph in London since its premiere performance in 1895 and still delights readers more than a century later, with its mistaken identities, secret engagements, and lovers entanglements from Victorian England. A light-hearted satire of the absurdity of conventions, this comic play features an unforgettable cast of characters who speak nonsense twisted into fantasy, with provocative observations. These sparkling masterpieces by Oscar Wilde at the height of his art will delight readers of all ages. Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) was an Irish author, playwright and poet, who built an esthete and hedonist dandy character. Inseparable from his huge literary talent, his extraordinary personality, biting wit, flamboyant dress and glittering conversation ensured his fame.
