This book was released on 2009 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the unique phenomenon of the pictorialization of Dürer's drawings. Representative Northern European painters in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries - such as Hans Schäufelein, Jacob Hoefnagel and Jan Brueghel the Elder - reproduced Dürer's drawings, from single motifs to whole compositions in brilliant colors. This publication discusses the character of Dürer's workshop, preferences for drawings in Renaissance Germany, questions about authorship and ownership around works of art and the reception and adaptation of the Northern Renaissance art in the Prague Mannerism. It also demonstrates how in the course of the sixteenth century the evaluation of Dürer's drawings in Northern Europe changed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Durer's study of human proportions and the use of transformations to a coordinate grid to demonstrate facial variation inspired similar work by D'Arcy Thompson in his book On Growth and Form. He exerted a huge influence on the artists of succeeding generations, especially in printmaking, the medium through which his contemporaries mostly experienced his art, as his paintings were predominantly in private collections located in only a few cities. His success in spreading his reputation across Europe through prints was undoubtedly an inspiration for major artists such as Raphael, Titian, and Parmigianino, all of whom collaborated with printmakers in order to promote and distribute their work. His work in engraving seems to have had an intimidating effect upon his German successors, the "Little Masters" who attempted few large engravings but continued Durer's themes in small, rather cramped compositions. Lucas van Leyden was the only Northern European engraver to successfully continue to produce large engravings in the first third of the 16th century. The generation of Italian engravers who trained in the shadow of Durer all either directly copied parts of his landscape backgrounds (Giulio Campagnola, Giovanni Battista Palumba, Benedetto Montagna and Cristofano Robetta), or whole prints (Marcantonio Raimondi and Agostino Veneziano).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Albrecht Durer's (1471-1528) travels across Europe in the early Renaissance led to a fascinating interchange of ideas with his fellow artists, both northern and southern. This book explores Durer's extensive influence on his contemporaries and his sources of inspiration, bringing together paintings, drawings, sculptures, glass, and prints by artists he may have encountered along the way. It also examines the complex development of Durer's own status as an artist entrepreneur and innovator in artistic theory.0 Durer's journal records his pursuit of commissions and details his visits to Italy, Antwerp, Cologne, Brussels, Ghent, and Bruges. During this time he produced a trove of landscapes, portraits, and animal drawings, and studies for larger projects, such as the painting of Saint Jerome that would become his most copied work. Durer's travels informed some of his most exciting and engaging works, and their visual legacy extended far beyond his lifetime and throughout the continent.00Exhibition: The National Gallery, London, UK(06.03.?13.06.2021) / Suermondt-Ludwig Museum, Aachen, Germany (18.07.-24.10.2021).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clothing appears in all forms of figurative painting, often taking up two thirds of a frame; yet it can often go unnoticed. Far more than a simple means of identifying the status or occupation of a figure, clothes and cloth are used creatively by artists to hint at ambiguities in character, adjust the emotional temperature, direct the eye or make subtle allusions. Drawing on works by artists over a period of six centuries, from Giotto to El Greco, Matisse to Cindy Sherman, the author reveals through paintings, fashion plates, photographs and film stills how drapery in art evolved from Renaissance extravagance to Neoclassical simplicity at the end of the 18th century, and has extended to infinite uses in all genres of Modern art. First published in 2002 to accompany an exhibition of the same name at the National Gallery, London, this beautifully illustrated - and beautifully written - book by pioneering art historian and critic Anne Hollander, is reissued with a new Foreword by Valerie Steele. As penetrating and insightful as when it was first published, it remains a must-read for today's generation of students and anyone with an interest in art and fashion.

Book excerpt: Since its original publication, Erwin Panofsky's Meaning in the Visual Arts has been standard reading for students of art history. It is both an introduction to the study of art and, for those with more specialized interests, a profound discussion of art and life in the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Panofsky's historical technique reveals an abundance of detail, detail he skillfully relates to the life and work of individual painters and their times. The papers in this volume represent a cross-section of Panofsky's major work. Included are selections from his well-known Studies in Iconology and The Life and Art of Albrecht Durer, plus an introduction and an epilogue--The History of Art as a Humanistic Discipline and Three Decades of Art History in the United States: Impressions of a Transplanted European--as well as pieces written especially for this collection. All display Panofsky's vast erudition and deep commitment to a humanistic conception of art and art history.
