Book excerpt: Excerpt from Applied Psychology: A Series of Lectures Presenting an Analysis of Psychology in a Simplified Terminology; With Special Attention to Biologic Phases of Physiology and Demonstrating the Separateness of the Entities Mind and Soul In the final and last consideration, there is but one important fact that presents itself to us and that is our existence. The highest proof that we may have of this fact is only our consciousness of it. For if asked to prove our existence, we are in a more helpless condi tion than with respect to almost any other subject. We can make some show Of tracing our ancestry; Of following out the history Of nations; of getting reasons for conditions ordinarily considered to be within the scope Of science, but as to our individual existence, our highest proof is but our consciousness Of it. The next most important fact is our knowl edge of self. Mr. Pope has said that The greatest study of mankind is man but I would say that the greatest study Of mankind is to learn how to study himself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physiology of the Soul and Instinct, as Distinguished From Materialism: With Supplementary Demonstrations of the Divine Communication of the Narratives of Creation and the Flood Such a conviction, arising from demonstrative proof, which appeals to the senses as well as the understanding, it appears to the writer, has been wanted by the human family, however they may be disposed, in the main, to accede to Revelation, or to listen to the natural suggestions of Reason. If the writer has failed, he will enjoy the consciousness of knowing that he will have done no harm to morals or religion, and that the worst of the issue will be the trouble that may devolve upon others in restoring the subject to its former obscurities and consequent tendencies." The second edition of the work on the Soul and Instinct, consisting of a small duodecimo, from the Preface to which the foregoing remarks are derived, has been before the public since 1849; and as the Author is not aware of any adverse criticisms, he offers this octavo edition in the belief that it will be found even more unexceptionable than the former. The facts and illustrations are greatly amplified, and the Author has aimed, so far as the subjects will admit, at a simplification that may adapt the work to the common understanding. He has also introduced a variety of topics which have appeared in some of his other works that have only an indirect, but, nevertheless, an important bearing upon the question relative to the Soul as distinguished from Materialism. Among the principal of these is the new doctrine of the "Correlation or Equivalence of the Physical and Vital Forces." If a principle of life be denied, in accounting for the endless and unique phenomena which appertain to the functions of organic beings, it is sufficiently apparent, independently of the avowed doctrines of materialism, that the phenomena of mind, from their connection with the same organization through which the functions of life are conducted, may be plausibly referred to the same physical causation. This doctrine of "Correlation of Forces" has therefore been made the basis of the "new materialism". hence it becomes necessary to expose its fallacies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anatomy and Physiology Rendered Attractive: And the Laws of Health Made Plain, in Conversations Between a Physician and Families, and for General Reading The origin of this work may be briefly stated. Within the last ten years the author has been requested, at various times, to address assemblies, particularly Sabbath Schools and Lyceums, upon the subject treated in this book. The thought and study necessary to the preparation of these lectures, have impressed him with the belief that the numerous works on Anatomy and Physiology, designed for the use of schools and for popular reading, have been essentially deficient, inasmuch as reference is seldom made in them, to the proofs that stand out so prominently in every part and organ of the human body, of the wisdom and goodness of God in its formation. This, perhaps, should not be expected in purely scientific works upon these subjects, designed solely for the Student of Medicine; yet, even in these, an occasional reference to the abundant proofs of creative goodness, would not be out of place. But in works designed for popular instruction, such deficiency is certainly a defect. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-08-02 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experiments on the Physiology of Alcohol, Made Under the Auspices of the Committee of Fifty Some may contend that the alcohol problem does not depend upon the science of physiology for its solution; but rather upon the moral, religious, or political functions of society. It should be remembered, however, that physiology is a broad science, whose ultimate aim is no less than to discover the laws and conditions under which may be developed the highest possible type of man. By the intimate correlations between body and mind, and under the recent outgrowths of the mother science into modern psychology and neurology, physiology would cover the whole man, body, mind, and soul. And it would have not only a healthy soul and a sound mind in a sound body, but the most perfect soul, mind, and body which can be developed under phys ical conditions. Thus problems touching human welfare, even questions of ethics and social science, must ever draw important factors for their solutions from this science which is fundamental to the conditions and processes of life itself.
