Book Synopsis Nerve Cells and Nervous Systems by : A.G. Brown
Download or read book Nerve Cells and Nervous Systems written by A.G. Brown and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-06-14 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is now about 10 years since the first edition of Nerve Cells and Nervous Systems was published. There have been many important advances across the whole field of neuro science since 1990 and it was obvious that the first edition had become much less useful than when it was published. Hence this new edition. I have attempted to keep to the aims of the first edition by presenting the general principles of neuroscience in the context of experimental evidence. As with the first edition, the selection of material to include, or exclude, has been difficult and invariably reflects my personal biases. I hope that not too many readers will be disappointed with the selections. I have unashamedly retained material, and, in particular, illustrations where I think they remain of importance to an understanding of the field and to its historical development. As before, I have attempted as reasonable a coverage as possible within the confines of a book that should be easy to carry around, to handle and, I hope, to read. The book should be useful for anyone studying the nervous system at both undergraduate and immediate postgraduate levels. In particular, under graduates reading neuroscience or any course containing a neuroscience component, such as physiology, pharmacology, biomedical sciences or psychology, as well as medicine and veterinary medicine should find the book helpful.

Book Synopsis Molecular and Cellular Physiology of Neurons by : Gordon L. Fain
Download or read book Molecular and Cellular Physiology of Neurons written by Gordon L. Fain and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2015-01-05 with total page 766 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecular and Cellular Physiology of Neurons: Second Edition is a comprehensive, up-to-date introduction to essential concepts of cellular neuroscience. Emphasizing experimental approaches and recent discoveries, it provides an in-depth look at the structure and function of nerve cells, from protein receptors and synapses to the biochemical processes that drive the mammalian nervous system. Starting with the basics of electrical current flow across cell membranes, Gordon Fain covers voltage gating and receptor activation in the context of channel diversity, excitatory and inhibitory synaptic transmission, neuromodulation, and sensory transduction. Emphasizing long-term processes of synaptic potentiation and depression involved in memory, consciousness, and attention, he demonstrates how cells produce neural signals and regulate signal flow to enhance or impede cell-to-cell communication. Fain also addresses the relation of molecular and cellular mechanisms to evolving theories of neurological disease and addiction. Enhanced by more than two hundred illustrations, Molecular and Cellular Physiology of Neurons: Second Edition is intended for anyone who seeks to understand the fundamentals of nerve cell function, including undergraduate and graduate students in neuroscience, students of bioengineering and cognitive science, and practicing neuroscientists who want to deepen their knowledge of recent discoveries in molecular and cellular neurophysiology.

Download or read book Nerve Cells and Nervous Systems written by Alan G. Brown and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Both teacher and reader will find here a careful presentation of both text and illustrations. The writing is clear, the organization is logical, and the illustrations are appropriate... this book is indeed good value." (TINS) "...the author has met his objective of whetting the appetite of his readers and encouraging the further pursuit of the subject." (Journal of Anatomy) "Brown argues (correctly in this reviewer's opinion) that neuroscience is primarily an experimental endeavor and therefore is taught best by presenting udergraduate students with the methods as well as the data of "classical" neurophysiological experiments. To this end, Brown has done a good job of supporting basic ideas with actual experimental methodology and results." (Choice)

Book excerpt: The second edition of Fundamentals of Anaesthesia builds upon the success of the first edition, and encapsulates the modern practice of anaesthesia in a single volume. Written and edited by a team of expert contributors, it provides a comprehensive but easily readable account of all of the information required by the FRCA Primary examination candidate and has been expanded to include more detail on all topics and to include new topics now covered in the examination. As with the previous edition, presentation of information is clear and concise, with the use of lists, tables, summary boxes and line illustrations where necessary to highlight important information and aid the understanding of complex topics. Great care has been taken to ensure an unrivalled consistency of style and presentation throughout.
Book Synopsis The Physiology of Synapses by : John Carew Eccles
Download or read book The Physiology of Synapses written by John Carew Eccles and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Physiology of Synapses covers the considerable advances in understanding the complex physiology of synapses. This book is divided into 16 chapters that emphasize the mechanism of synaptic transmission. The first chapters describe the structural and physiological features of chemically transmitting synapses. The subsequent chapters deal with the excitatory postsynaptic responses to presynaptic impulse and the release of transmitter by presynaptic impulses. These topics are followed by discussions of the impulse generation by the excitatory postsynaptic potential; the postsynaptic electrical events produced by chemically transmitting inhibitory synapses; the ionic mechanism generating the inhibitory postsynaptic potential. The last chapters consider the mechanism of inhibitory transmitter substances, pathways responsible for postsynaptic inhibitory action, and the trophic and plastic properties of synapses. This book will prove useful to physiologists, neurologists, and researchers.
