While fishways can provide access between downstream and upstream habitats, it is important that passage can occur with minimal delay, energy expenditure, and physiological stress. The research presented here is based on investigations into fishway attraction and passage for the Gates Creek sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka, Walbaum) stock at the Seton River dam in British Columbia. The first part of this thesis examined the effect of changes in water discharge from the dam on the relationship between the physiological condition of sockeye and their behaviour in approaching the fishway entrance. Fish were caught and non-lethally biopsied under three normal operating discharge conditions at Seton River dam, and subsets of sampled fish were implanted with radio transmitters and released downstream of the dam. Indices of physiological stress and exhaustive exercise (e.g. plasma cortisol, glucose, lactate, osmolality and hematocrit) did not differ among the water discharge levels that were examined. Fish delayed in the tailrace below the fishway entrance significantly longer under intermediate discharge (19.9 h @ 12.7 m3s>) than either the high discharge (9.3 h @ 15.8 m3s>), or the low discharge (7.0 h @11.0 m3s> ;) conditions (P = 0.022, and P = 0.015, respectively). Delay time was similar under high and low discharge conditions (P = 0.617), and passage success was found to be independent of discharge (P = 0.356). The second part of this thesis investigated how prior physiological condition and subsequent swimming energetics and behaviours effected fishway passage success. Fish were captured and biopsied, before being implanted with electromyogram (EMG) transmitters and released near the downstream entrance of the fishway. Very few differences existed between successful and unsuccessful fish in body size, initial plasma physiology and energy state, and mean swim speed and energy use.

Book excerpt: Adult Pacific salmon arrive at the Fraser River with a finite supply of energy to allocate between reproductive development and river migration, yet it is unknown if environmental conditions experienced by parents cause energetic trade-offs that ultimately affect offspring fitness. This thesis examined populations of Fraser River sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) that differed in their mirgration distance (Weaver - 100 km, Gates - 363 km, and Early Stuart - 1086 km) to assess the hypothesis that migratory stress exerts an intergenerational effect on offspring fitness. When compared among three year classes of Early Stuart sockeye salmon, metrics for ovarian development at six locations along the migration route revealed no evidence of facultative adjustments of either egg number or egg size en route. In contrast, significant interannual variation existed for final ovary mass, egg size and egg number over a 16-year period, with reductions in ovary mass and egg size associated with years of high river discharge rate during the migration. Selection against maternal phenotypes with a high ovarian investment strategy was postulated as a mechanism to reconcile both data sets. Maternal and paternal gamete origin significantly influenced offspring survival. However, egg viability did not correlate with phenotypic variation in maternal energetic condition, osmoregulatory status, reproductive hormonal state, egg composition, stress, or moribund condition. Nevertheless, at the population level, migration severity may have impacted overall egg quality because (a) the two populations that experienced more severe migration conditions in 1999 and 2000 had the lowest overall embryo survival (Gates = 77%; Early Stuart = 81%; Weaver = 94%; - artifical fertilizations), and (b) a poor maternal condition (using pre-spawn mortality as surrogate of poor condition and adverse migration conditions) was positively correlated with low egg to fry survival in Early Stuart sockeye salmon over a 15 year period. Given that changes in egg size and the number of surviving offspring associated with parental influences are clear examples of intergenerational effects in sockeye salmon, the weight of evidence suggests that migratory stress associated with the parental spawning migration can contribute to an alteration in intergenerational gene flow and offspring size.

Book excerpt: The time period in which juvenile salmon remain in an estuary varies greatly among and within populations, with some individuals passing through estuaries in a matter of hours, while others remain in the estuary for several months. This individual variation in estuary use suggests that there may be underlying differences in individual salmon condition that temporally mitigate the selection of habitat, such as smolt size (fork length, mass, condition factor), stored energy (lipids and proteins), and osmoregulatory function (gill N+-K+-ATPase activity, NKA). I investigated the role of physical and physiological condition on the selection of estuarine and ocean habitat by sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) smolts intercepted at the initiation of their downstream migration from Chilko Lake, Fraser River, B.C.. Since juvenile salmon energetic costs increase with rising salinity, I expected that smolts of lower physiological condition (i.e. low condition factor, poor energetic status and low NKA) would prefer to remain in the freshwater environment of the estuary, while smolts of higher physiological condition would prefer saline waters in the estuary and potentially indicate more rapid ocean entry. Behavioural salinity preference experiments were conducted on unfed smolts (n = 263) held in freshwater at three time intervals during their downstream migration period, representing the expected timing for lake exit, estuary entry, and ocean entry, at 0, 1, and 3 weeks respectively. Smolt condition factor (K), energetic stores and NKA predicted salinity preference behaviour in the estuary and ocean outmigration stages, but not at lake exit. Our results suggest that smolt physiological condition upon reaching the estuary may influence migratory behaviour and habitat selection, providing novel evidence on the temporally dependent interplay of physiology, behaviour and migration in wild juvenile Pacific salmon. As juvenile migratory behaviour is linked to physiological condition, and physiological condition is determined by productivity and competition within the rearing habitat, the importance of estuaries likely varies across years and within a population cohort; thus estuaries may be of heightened importance for wild juvenile salmon in years of poor freshwater growth conditions. These findings support the growing body of evidence on the importance of conserving both rearing habitat for juvenile growth potential and estuarine habitat for smolt refugia before ocean entry.
