Staggered by facts which they cannot under stand, accept any hypothesis which may be offered as an explanation, rather than confess their ignorance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Psychology During the last few years 'a wide interest has been aroused in the growth of a science of mental life which employs methods hitherto peculiar to the physical sciences. The interest has been followed by misconceptions of the most varied character. Some have supposed the new science to concern itself with experiments on thought-transference and clairvoyance others have regarded it as a presumptuous sub-depart ment of the physiology of the senses and the brain and still others have treated it as merely a materialistic 'philosophy in one of its aberrations. Amid such confusion it is no wonder that people ask: What is the new psychology? Is it brain physiology, or spiritualism, or a new kind of meta physics? And the chemist, geologist, or physicist is also inclined to ask: Is it a science at all? My aim in this book is to show just what the new psychology is. I have sought to make clear the funda mental ideas of the science, and have not attempted to 'cover the whole field of investigation. Salient points and fundamental methods were chosen rather than a multitude of details. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. They are not only interesting as those who possess an insight into events and circumstances, but also as proof of life after death. In this clear and useful reference guide, Bjorling presents a listing of the literature on the various ways in which people of different cultures have consulted spirits—through shamans and oracles, magic, mediums, Voodoo, and psychics. Each chapter contains a general introduction to the respective topic as well as a listing of pertinent books, articles, and dissertations. His survey also includes early spirit contacts in Africa, Latin America, and Asia.

Book excerpt: Have you ever wanted to dive deeper into your spiritual life but didn't know how? We spend so much time and energy on our physical life that it is often easy to forget about our spirits. Most people live malnourished spiritual lives at no fault of their own. It's time to wake up your mind by understanding more about our physical body. God left his fingerprints all over the human body; the more we learn about our bodies, the more we find out about him. If you've ever been interested in a human physiology course, this book breaks into the foundation of human physiology but applies it spiritually. We can all grow our spirits in some way. Often, the more we learn about our souls, the more we learn about ourselves. God gave you a fantastic physical human body, a temple, that he created for you. Your mind, heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, all have their functions. You do as well. What's more beautiful than your body is the spirit he gave to you as well. Use this book to get deeper into the spiritual world of the Bible, but also use it to get deeper into yourself. As anatomy is to your physical structure, physiology is the function of different organs. In this book, we dive into the spiritual physiology of your nature. In other words, your spiritual function, purpose, and identity. What is your goal? How is your spirit? Why did God encase our spirits inside of a physical body? All these questions and more will be analyzed and dissected in this book, Spiritual Physiology.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Lecture on the Physiology of Digestion: Introductory to a Course of Lectures on the Institutes of Medicine and Materia Medica; Delivered Before the Medical Class of the University of the City of New York, at the Session of 1844-5 Differences of Opinion on questions of great moment to mankind are apt to be strongly conveyed, and apparent error to be censured in no measured terms. This, perhaps, is Often admissible, considering the obstinacy Of error, and so long as it is the doctrine, and not its au thor, which is assailed. 'we may revere the names Of Voltaire, of Hume, and Of Gibbon, yield them a proud rank in the scale of intel lect, and gratefully acknowledge the rich legacies they have left he hind. But, who of us would hesitate to speak Of their infidelity according to its nature and tendencies? This is even demanded by what we believe of the precepts of religion. And so of the principles of medicine, which hold as high a relation to the temporal interests of man, as do the precepts Of religion to his spiritual welfare. The high est order Of intellect is Often devoted to the dissemination Of error, and perhaps more frequently in religion and medicine than in any other of the great interests of mankind. This must be fully and firmly met, not only by evidences of the truth, but by an exposure of its perver sions and corruptions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physiology of the Soul and Instinct, as Distinguished From Materialism: With Supplementary Demonstrations of the Divine Communication of the Narratives of Creation and the Flood Such a conviction, arising from demonstrative proof, which appeals to the senses as well as the understanding, it appears to the writer, has been wanted by the human family, however they may be disposed, in the main, to accede to Revelation, or to listen to the natural suggestions of Reason. If the writer has failed, he will enjoy the consciousness of knowing that he will have done no harm to morals or religion, and that the worst of the issue will be the trouble that may devolve upon others in restoring the subject to its former obscurities and consequent tendencies." The second edition of the work on the Soul and Instinct, consisting of a small duodecimo, from the Preface to which the foregoing remarks are derived, has been before the public since 1849; and as the Author is not aware of any adverse criticisms, he offers this octavo edition in the belief that it will be found even more unexceptionable than the former. The facts and illustrations are greatly amplified, and the Author has aimed, so far as the subjects will admit, at a simplification that may adapt the work to the common understanding. He has also introduced a variety of topics which have appeared in some of his other works that have only an indirect, but, nevertheless, an important bearing upon the question relative to the Soul as distinguished from Materialism. Among the principal of these is the new doctrine of the "Correlation or Equivalence of the Physical and Vital Forces." If a principle of life be denied, in accounting for the endless and unique phenomena which appertain to the functions of organic beings, it is sufficiently apparent, independently of the avowed doctrines of materialism, that the phenomena of mind, from their connection with the same organization through which the functions of life are conducted, may be plausibly referred to the same physical causation. This doctrine of "Correlation of Forces" has therefore been made the basis of the "new materialism". hence it becomes necessary to expose its fallacies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Physiological Laws of Human Increase Certainly a well-arranged and most comprehensive science has already been reared, but it is destined to attain proportions much more gigantic than it now presents. If the theory of human increase about to be proposed is found to have a sure basis in the great laws of Physiology, it will be difficult to find language adequate to express the value of the principles involved, or the extent of their application. It approaches the subject from a point of view which has not hitherto been taken, and which opens a field of inquiry so new, so vast, and so complicated, that one almost shrinks from the undertaking. The most that any single individual can do in such a field, is to throw a mere pebble into the great ocean of truth. In entering, therefore, upon an examination of this question, it becomes the inquirer to suspend his Opinion till he can Obtain a sufficient accumulation of facts and knowledge on the subject, so that he can form some rational and correct judgment as to their relative bearing, and the support they give to this or that theory. No prejudice or pre-conceived Opinions should be allowed to stand in the way of coming to a fair and intelligent decision. But, in order to do this properly, some general knowledge -- and the more profound the better -- Of the facts and laws of physi ology is indispensable. Guided by the true Baconian spirit of philosophy, and after a thorough investigation of the whole sub ject, it may be expected we shall then arrive at some enlightened and satisfactory results in the extensive field of investigation. In the following book I propose to lay before the reader a summary of all the historic evidence available, together with a detailed record of our own experiments with this medium, conducted in Naples, in November and December, 1908; a complete resume of every theory that has been advanced to date - with a provisional hypothesis of my own; and then to discuss at some length the biological and psychological peculiarities of the case - from the point of view of one who assumes, on the strength of the existing testimony, that the facts are established. One forms a very different opinion of Eusapia's seances before and after he has obtained personal sittings.
