Book excerpt: An examination of the contradictions within a form of expression that is both public and private, specific and abstract, conventional and countercultural. Snapshots capture everyday occasions. Taken by amateur photographers with simple point-and-shoot cameras, snapshots often commemorate something that is private and personal; yet they also reflect widely held cultural conventions. The poses may be formulaic, but a photograph of loved ones can evoke a deep affective response. In Snapshot Photography, Catherine Zuromskis examines the development of a form of visual expression that is both public and private. Scholars of art and culture tend to discount snapshot photography; it is too ubiquitous, too unremarkable, too personal. Zuromskis argues for its significance. Snapshot photographers, she contends, are not so much creating spontaneous records of their lives as they are participating in a prescriptive cultural ritual. A snapshot is not only a record of interpersonal intimacy but also a means of linking private symbols of domestic harmony to public ideas of social conformity. Through a series of case studies, Zuromskis explores the social life of snapshot photography in the United States in the latter half of the twentieth century. She examines the treatment of snapshot photography in the 2002 film One Hour Photo and in the television crime drama Law and Order: Special Victims Unit; the growing interest of collectors and museum curators in “vintage” snapshots; and the “snapshot aesthetic” of Andy Warhol and Nan Goldin. She finds that Warhol’s photographs of the Factory community and Goldin’s intense and intimate photographs of friends and family use the conventions of the snapshot to celebrate an alternate version of “family values.” In today’s digital age, snapshot photography has become even more ubiquitous and ephemeral—and, significantly, more public. But buried within snapshot photography’s mythic construction, Zuromskis argues, is a site of democratic possibility.

Book excerpt: The report describes the current state-of-the-art in automation of graphic arts composition, starting from either of two sources: keyboard entry of manuscript material, or mechanized input in the form of available perforated tapes or magnetic tapes. The gamut is covered from one extreme in which a skilled keyboard operator performs all of the compositor functions required to operate a typesetting machine, to the other extreme in which the input merely provides text whether or not including designation of desired font changes, followed by a high degree of automation through all operations leading to type set for printing. Intermediate automation aids for the compositor functions, including characteristics of special-purpose digital computers and functions performed by typography programs for general-purpose digital computers, are reviewed. Characteristics of automatically operated typesetting mechanisms, including hot metal casting machines and photocomposers, slow, medium and high speed, are outlined. Applications of new techniques for typographic-quality automated composition that are of interest in scientific and technical information centers, libraries, and other documentation operations include sequential card camera listings, computer-generated KWIC indexes, photocomposition of technical journals, automatic composition of books containing both computer-produced tabular data and natural language texts, and the incorporation of mechanized processes throughout the publication cycle from the author's original manuscript preparation to the final printing. While retaining his job with the fire department, with the help of his son, he became a successful business owner, developer, inventor, entrepreneur, and CEO for twenty-one years. He worked tirelessly in developing money-making opportunities and growing the business. Knowing you cannot blame anyone for the outcome of your life, if you do the finger-pointing at others, you will never grow up into adulthood and receive the gratification and knowledge that you are your own person. Thanks to my grandmothers, maternal grandfather, aunts, and uncles for showing me the side of life that could be mine if I worked long and hard enough to achieve the rewards. I hope that some young person who is having a hard life will somehow read this book and come away with even one thought that helps him or her to avoid the mistakes I made in my life. Though the communities mentioned are where the stories occurred, some of the names of the people in the stories have been changed to hide embarrassing situations for individuals still living.
