Download or read book The Phoney Victory written by Peter Hitchens and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-09-06 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Was World War II really the `Good War'? In the years since the declaration of peace in 1945 many myths have sprung up around the conflict in the victorious nations. In this book, Peter Hitchens deconstructs the many fables which have become associated with the narrative of the `Good War'. Whilst not criticising or doubting the need for war against Nazi Germany at some stage, Hitchens does query whether September 1939 was the right moment, or the independence of Poland the right issue. He points out that in the summer of 1939 Britain and France were wholly unprepared for a major European war and that this quickly became apparent in the conflict that ensued. He also rejects the retroactive claim that Britain went to war in 1939 to save the Jewish population of Europe. On the contrary, the beginning and intensification of war made it easier for Germany to begin the policy of mass murder in secret as well as closing most escape routes. In a provocative, but deeply-researched book, Hitchens questions the most common assumptions surrounding World War II, turning on its head the myth of Britain's role in a `Good War'.

This resource explores the emergence of monarchial nation-states and early Western capitalism during this period. Also examined in depth are the Protestant Reformation and the Counter-Reformation, which exacerbated tensions between states and contributed to the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648). Readers will come to understand how these events developed, how they led to the age of exploration, and how they inform modern European history."
Book Synopsis The False Prophets of Peace by : Tikva Honig-Parnass
Download or read book The False Prophets of Peace written by Tikva Honig-Parnass and published by Haymarket Books. This book was released on 2011-11-15 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book refutes the long held view of the Israeli left as adhering to a humanistic, democratic and even socialist tradition, attributed to the historic Zionist Labor movement. Through a critical analysis of the prevailing discourse of Zionist intellectuals and activists on the Jewish-democratic state, it uncovers the Zionist left’s central role in laying the foundation of the colonial settler state of Israel, in articulating its hegemonic ideology and in legitimizing, whether explicitly or implicitly, the apartheid treatment of Palestinians both inside Israel and in the 1967 occupied territories. Their determined support of a Jewish-only state underlies the failure of the “peace process,” initiated by the Zionist Left, to reach a just peace based on recognition of the national rights of the entire Palestinian people.
Download or read book Rebel Masons written by Andrew Sinclair and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2011-07-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Freemasons were the leading lights in the American, the French, and the Italian Revolutions. In Britain, they represented the high command of the armies in the Protestant versus Catholic wars in Northern Ireland and Jacobite Scotland. They also led Napoleon’s conquest of Europe. Often held to be conspirators against the state, they became the pillars of the establishment in the military and the law. Their future lies in combating modern atheism and materialism with their vision of a God the Creator, the origin and divine builder of the universe.
