Water, with its extraordinarily rich capacity for generating imagery, provided the primary model for conceptualizing general cosmic principles while plants provided a model for the continuous sequence of generation, growth, reproduction, and death and was the basis for the Chinese understanding of the nature of man in both religion and philosophy. Book excerpt: This book exhibits deep philosophical quandaries and intricacies of the historical development of science lying behind a simple and fundamental item of common sense in modern science, namely the composition of water as H2O. Three main phases of development are critically re-examined, covering the historical period from the 1760s to the 1860s: the Chemical Revolution (through which water first became recognized as a compound, not an element), early electrochemistry (by which water’s compound nature was confirmed), and early atomic chemistry (in which water started out as HO and became H2O). In each case, the author concludes that the empirical evidence available at the time was not decisive in settling the central debates and therefore the consensus that was reached was unjustified or at least premature. This leads to a significant re-examination of the realism question in the philosophy of science and a unique new advocacy for pluralism in science. Each chapter contains three layers, allowing readers to follow various parts of the book at their chosen level of depth and detail. The second major study in "complementary science", this book offers a rare combination of philosophy, history and science in a bid to improve scientific knowledge through history and philosophy of science.

And so time stood still there, as they could not see or realize that I was amongst them, as if the future were somehow waiting for the past to catch up with itself, in order for them to be triggered back to life, as there was no night or day but they were more like shadows or silhouettes' or ghost like statues standing still, as also I saw amongst them gold material possessions that shone brightly out of other grayish discarded materials that were either used or tainted objects, or were at least disposable consumerables, that were expired long ago, and as I began to wonder and realize that these shiny artifacts were somehow the newly awaiting symbolic objects and materials and possessions of tomorrow's world, if indeed they were to come to life and fruition, or even if those of us who were present, were to gain them at all, in realizing that they were not yet acquired by any hands, and so as time stood still it appeared to me that in my witnessing this potential future prevailing, that I was to record what I had seen, or at least understood it to be, as if I had time travelled or ascended to a place in time connected with my own future in mind.

The need to incorporate nature into politics was revealed by a series of large-scale industrial disasters in the 1890s. The Ashio Copper Mine unleashed massive amounts of copper, arsenic, mercury, and other pollutants into surrounding watersheds. Robert Stolz argues that by forcefully demonstrating the mutual penetration of humans and nature, industrial pollution biologically and politically compromised the autonomous liberal subject underlying the political philosophy of the modernizing Meiji state. In the following decades, socialism, anarchism, fascism, and Confucian benevolence and moral economy were marshaled in the search for new theories of a modern political subject and a social organization adequate to the environmental crisis. With detailed considerations of several key environmental activists, including Tanaka Shōzō, Bad Water is a nuanced account of Japan's environmental turn, a historical moment when, for the first time, Japanese thinkers and activists experienced nature as alienated from themselves and were forced to rebuild the connections.
