Book excerpt: Charles Bucke was an English author who published an impressive variety of works covering a vast range of topics during his lifetime, including several on the subject of philosophy. Bucke's book "The Philosophy of Nature: Or the Influence of Scenery on the Mind and Heart" was originally published in two volumes, but later he added a third and a fourth volume to the series as his knowledge and insight around the subject continued to expand. Volume two highlights the heart as a means to explore nature and scenery, "Of all the passions, which derive additional force from scenery, none experiences a greater accession than Love." Bucke then explores how the ancients have described love and how humans express it in the current age.
