Book excerpt: This is the seventh of a series of small books under the head "Satchidaananda Vaak-Jyoti' or "The Enlightening Words of Satchidaananda". All these booklets contain a free transliteration of the enlightening and immortal words and teachings of Shri Satchidaanandendra Saraswati Swamiji, of revered memory, found in his numerous Kannada books. Those readers who do not have the facility and advantage of reading and understanding books in the Kannada language will be immensely benefited by these English publications written in simple language and style. This small plan of publishing these 'gems of spiritual literature', unrivalled in their esoteric import and teachings of the highest order and based on the pristine pure original Bhashyas of Adi Shankara, was first mooted by Shri D. B. Gangolli, a devotee and admirer of Swamiji. It is an irony of our times that even that great Acharya's immaculate teachings of Atma Vidya or Self-Knowledge, purely based on the strength of the Upanishadic statements, their veracity based on Intuitive dialectics or ratiocination (called Anubhavaanga Tarka) and finally on the strength of the culmination or consummation of all those teachings in one's own Intuitive. experience here and now, have been distorted beyond recognition and redemption.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advaita Vedānta is the most important philosophical system in India. It involves a discipline of spiritual experience as well as a technical philosophy, and since the time of Samkara in the ninth century some of the greatest intellects in India have contributed to its development. In his reconstruction of Advaita Vedānta, Eliot Deutsch has lifted the system out of its historical/cultural context and has concentrated attention on those ideas which have enduring philosophical value. He has sought to formulate systematically one's understanding of what is of universal philosophical interest in Vedantic thought. Professor Deutsch's work covers the basic metaphysical, epistemological, and ethical ideas of Vedānta. Students and scholars of Western as well as of Indian philosophy will be interested in the lucid, organized manner in which the material is presented and in the fresh interpretations given. The book is written in a critical rather than simply "pious" spirit and should thus also be of interest to anyone interested in deepening his or her appreciation and understanding of the richness of Indian thought.

Book excerpt: The ancient seers of India realized the highest non-dual Truth and thus attained to unity in the religious field; they succeeded in bringing religion to the rank of a perfect and complete science. The methods adopted by them to come to this result were the same as those followed by all the sciences of the present day. This book discusses how the philosophers of India applied these rational methods in coming to their respective discoveries, thus establishing the scientific character of Indian philosophy and religion. The book chiefly makes a comparative study of Samkhya, Vedanta and other systems of thought. Published by Advaita Ashrama, a publication house of Ramakrishna Math, Belur Math, India.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All students of philosophy will relate to the concepts of selfhood, nature, karma and liberation. Here are views and answers to the most important questions. How is self identified? What are the causes and effects in nature? Are our actions determined? What is freedom for a human being? What happens after death? The Essence of Vedanta examines issues of existential philosophy from the viewpoint of the Veda, the most ancient and sacred of Indian scriptures, and also outlines the work of Sankara, the early medieval master of Vedanta's dominant form, Advaita. The foundation of all Vedic teaching lies in the universal truth that human nature reflects God (Brahman), who exists in every living thing. An individual needs no salvation therefore, because he or she is never lost, but merely living in ignorance of his or her true nature. Brian Hodgkinson offers readers insight into, and discussion of, the fundamental questions of the Vedic system concerning self-realization, such as knowledge versus ignorance, the self, consciousness, free will, nature, time, the mind, language, law and society. His fascinating appraisal reveals the profound nature of the Veda and its practices. With its tolerance of other faiths, and ultimately uplifting spiritual message, it is a discipline that chimes with our 21st century needs and preoccupations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vedanta is one of the world's most ancient spiritual philosophies and one of its broadest, based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India. It is the philosophical foundation of Hinduism; but while Hinduism includes aspects of Indian culture, Vedanta is universal in its application and is equally relevant to all countries, all cultures, and all religious backgrounds. This book introduces Swami Vivekananda who was intensely perturbed by the endless suffering of mankind. He discovered that the root of all suffering lies in ignorance, disharmony, divisiveness and confinement of consciousness within finitude. In the light of his experience of cosmic consciousness, he found a bridge between science and spirituality, between religions, and between the mundane and divine.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vedanta Philosophy: Lecture on the Use of Religion It would be too long a process to attempt to show how this is done, but we are all familiar with the result, we are all able to at once describe a certain object as a tree, even if we never before saw one of that particular kind. We can even follow the idea into the realms of imagination, and picture to our selves such trees as never existed on earth, without the least doubt as to what we mean when we call these creations of our fancy trees. With religion, we have more difficulty, because it is entirely a mental concept, without actual physical shape, so to speak. Still the same thing must be true about it. Before we can call anything a religion we must have in our minds some idea, however vague, of what religion means to us. What, then, is the one idea common to every religion, which must be present to give it a distinctive character as a religion? It is not a belief in God, or soul, or immortality, or Heaven, or Hell, because we find one of the great religions of the world which entirely omits all these ideas. Yet no student of the subject would for an instant hesitate to classify Buddhism as a religion, and a very great one. The one common element in everything called by the name of religion is man's attempt to penetrate beyond the world of the senses. Inherent in the very constitution of man is the necessity to relate himself with that which is above and beyond the limits of the seen world. From the most ignorant savage, whose worship is of the crud est kind, to the most intellectual philosopher, or the most advanced scientist, man is eternally finding himself confronted with an unknown Beyond. Every science, when pushed to its ultimate, reaches what modern philosophy calls the Unknow able. The most subtle reasoning cannot penetrate that dead wall that limits even the keenest intellect. Just here, then, when man has, as Max Miiller so well expresses it, at least once in his life looked beyond the horizon of this world and carried away in his mind an impression of the Infinite just here religion begins for that man. Prof. Daniel G. Brinton, of the University of Pennsylvania, claims that religion takes its rise in the mental sub-consciousness. By this he appears to mean that religious ideas spring from something deeper than conscious reasoning. The expression. Super conscious, made use of by the Vedanta, seems to me a more correct one, and one that more clearly conveys the idea that religion springs from a source beyond the ordinary state of the human mind, from a plane beyond intellect, a plane which has been reached bv many men, and which can be reached by every human being who will make the same effort that they made. Revelation is not the property of any age or race, of any Prophet or Teacher, however great; it is the birthright of humanity, the natural outcome of the inherent Divinity that is the real nature of man.
