This book was released on 2003-01-14 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During World War I, the publishers of America's crusading black newspapers faced a difficult dilemma. Would it be better to advance the interests of African Americans by affirming their patriotism and offering support of President Wilson's war for democracy in Europe, or should they demand that the government take concrete steps to stop the lynching, segregation, and disfranchisement of blacks at home as a condition of their participation in the war? This study of their efforts to resolve that dilemma offers important insights into the nature of black protest, race relations, and the role of the press in a republican system. William Jordan shows that before, during, and after the war, the black press engaged in a delicate and dangerous dance with the federal government and white America--at times making demands or holding firm, sometimes pledging loyalty, occasionally giving in. But although others have argued that the black press compromised too much, Jordan demonstrates that, given the circumstances, its strategic combination of protest and accommodation was remarkably effective. While resisting persistent threats of censorship, the black press consistently worked at educating America about the need for racial justice.

Book excerpt: A complex, poignant exploration of racial attitudes in America, as illumined by the case of Edmund Perry. Perry, a seventeen-year-old black honors student from Harlem, was fatally shot by a young white plainclothes policeman in 1985 in an alleged mugging attempt. Perry had recently graduated from Philips Exeter Academy and was to attend Stanford University that fall. The shooting and the subsequent case, in which Edmund's elder brother Jonah, an undergraduate at Cornell University, was accused, tried, and found not guilty, drew national headlines and was the subject of heated debate among black and white communities alike. Using interviews with Perry's parents, friends, and former teachers in Harlem and at Exeter, journalist Robert Sam Anson has written a compelling account of a boy caught between two worlds and a profound portrait of the state of race in America.

This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Familiar Sketches of the Phillips Exeter Academy and Surroundings A visit to some of the great schools of England, one summer, during my student days at Exeter, and a subsequent inquiry into their foundation, endowment, and discipline, led me to study somewhat carefully the history of the school in which I was most interested, - that of the Phillips Exeter Academy. I was surprised to find how meagre were the sources of information. The only available articles were Professor Hoyt's paper, published in 1858, in the North American Review, and Professor Bowen's Preface to the General Catalogue issued by the Academy in 1869. These, although written in a far more scholarly style than I could hope to command, were necessarily brief. "This institution," I considered, "founded as it was in the days of Washington, of Lafayette, and of Jefferson, possessing as it does such glorious traditions and so many eminent Alumni, deserves, beyond a doubt, a written history." It was suggested that I should write something; but I at first hesitated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
