This book was released on 2015 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-sufficiency is the objective of every agricultural country. The Philippines has initially targeted rice self-sufficiency in 2013. However, this time frame has been moved and the country is likely to import rice from neighboring countries. With the wake of some reports of growing rice consumption and population growth in the Philippines, challenges in rice production, and an escalating amount of rice imported, self-sufficiency in rice is certainly a cause of substantial concern of the government. Thus, this study determined the self-sufficiency in rice status of the Philippines by analyzing the fourteen (14) rice-producing regions in the Philippines from 1992 to 2012. Four statistical tool where used in determining the results of the analysis namely, Stochastic Frontier Analysis, Data Envelopment Analysis – Malmquist. Productivity Index, Envelopment Analysis - Slack based Measurement of Efficiency, and Logistic regression. Results of the analysis showed rejection of the hypotheses implying that 91) Input factors affect production, consumption, and importation; (2) Cordillera Autonomous Region and Central Visayas are the two most productive and efficient regions; and (3) Rice production and rice importation affect rice self-sufficiency positively, while rice consumption affects rice self-sufficiency negatively. Overall, the Philippines is not rice self-sufficient due to increasing gap between production and consumption, and escalating amount in importation of rice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food security is one of the greatest challenges of our time. The food price crisis of 2008 exposed the vulnerabilities of the global food system. Governments across Asia acerbated the crisis by imposing export restrictions based on a policy of self-sufficiency. This book assesses whether self-sufficiency is an adequate response to the food security challenges we face. Pricing volatility drives isolationism at a time when climate change and increasingly uncertain weather patterns make it difficult for any single nation to guarantee adequate food production for itself. Through a collection of commissioned studies which draw upon the experience of leading experts and scholars in trade, investment, law, economics, and food policy, this book analyses the impact of this trend on the most essential crop in the Asian region - rice. It suggests that food security policy should be reconceptualised: from the national to the regional and even the global level. It also provides its own proposals as to how this new paradigm of collective food security should be understood and developed. The book calls for a new conversation in the region, acknowledging that the challenges we face are global and the solutions must be found in collective action. This state-of-the-art study will appeal to lawyers, economists and political scientists, as well as food security specialists by providing expert analyses and enlightening solutions for the future.

Book excerpt: In this volume, a leading group of scholars pose the question, has the Philippine economy rejoined the dynamic East Asian mainstream and, if so, what set of policies and priorities are required to maintain the strong economic momentum of recent years? Successive chapters address issues related to growth and poverty, infrastructure and urbanization, education, health, the environment, energy, development finance, and governance and institutions. The book has been written with a broad audience in mind. First and foremost it is for readers in, and interested in, this fascinating and important country with a population that now exceeds a hundred million. Second, it will appeal to those in the broader development community with an interest in the analytical and policy challenges that democratic, middle-income countries face as they struggle to lift their citizens out of poverty and to achieve broad-based and environmentally sustainable growth.
