Despite historic set backs, the franchise has proven resilient and evolved into a perennial contender with consistently large attendance figures. In fact, the Phillies claim 37 Hall of Famers, two World Series championships, seven National League pennants, and nine division titles. The Philadelphia Phillies chronicles the greatness of Grover Cleveland Alexander, the remarkable career of Richie Ashburn, the perfection of Jim Bunning, and the teams of success and luster as well as those shining stars of the less successful eras.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colorful, shaggy, and unkempt, misfits and outlaws, the 1993 Phillies played hard and partied hard. Led by Darren Daulton, John Kruk, Lenny Dykstra, and Mitch Williams, it was a team the fans loved and continue to love today. Focusing on six key members of the team, Macho Row follows the remarkable season with an up-close look at the players’ lives, the team’s triumphs and failures, and what made this group so unique and so successful. With a throwback mentality, the team adhered to baseball’s Code. Designed to preserve the moral fabric of the game, the Code’s unwritten rules formed the bedrock of this diehard team whose players paid homage and respect to the game at all times. Trusting one another and avoiding any notions of superstardom, they consistently rubbed the opposition the wrong way and didn’t care. William C. Kashatus pulls back the covers on this old-school band of brothers, depicting the highs and lows and their brash style while also digging into the suspected steroid use of players on the team. Macho Row is a story of winning and losing, success and failure, and the emotional highs and lows that accompany them.

Book excerpt: Catcher Gus Triandos dubbed the Philadelphia Phillies' 1964 season "the year of the blue snow"a rare thing that happens once in a great while. The Phillies were having a spectacular season in which everything was going right. They held a 6 1/2 game lead at the conclusion of play on September 20. With just 12 games to play, they seemingly had it made. But the Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals never gave up, and when the Phillies lost ten consecutive games, it became a thrilling pennant race for Cardinals and Reds fans, but a horrific collapse for Phillies fanatics. But wait a minute. When it was seemingly too late, the Phillies finally won a game—and the first-place Cardinals lost two games to the lowly New York Mets, so on the last day of the season there was the distinct possibility of a three-way tie for first place. It would have been a first in baseball history. On the final day of the season, the Phillies beat the Reds handily, 10-0. All eyes and ears were fixed on the Mets-Cardinals game. Could the Mets knock off the first-place Cardinals for a third straight game? The Mets carried a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning, but finally succumbed, 11-5. But what a season for Phillies fans. Jim Bunning had thrown the first perfect game in the last 84 years of NL history. The hero of the 1964 All-Star Game was the team's right fielder Johnny Callison, who brought the National League victory with the third walk-off home run in the history of the All-Star Game. The team also boasted the electrifying NL Rookie of the Year - the team's slugging third baseman Richie Allen (later called Dick Allen). St. Louis won the pennant, and went on to beat the Yankees in the World Series. But in Philadelphia, the '64 campaign left an ache that lasted for years. The 1964 Phillies not only "lost" the pennant but, following 1964, they got steadily worse. This book sheds light on the facts for the reader to determine answers to lingering questions they may still have about the Phillies team in the 1964 season—but any book about a team is really about the players. A collaborative effort by 37 members of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR), this work offers life stories of all the players and others (managers, coaches, owners, and broadcasters) associated with this star-crossed team, as well as essays of analysis and historical recaps. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The release of Ken Burns' documentary Baseball in 1994 and the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Jackie Robinson's debut in the major leagues in 1997 once again brought attention to the integration of baseball. Integration did not guarantee equality or even begin to solve baseball's race-related struggles. In some instances, integration caused even more problems for the African American players and their white teammates. This was the case in Philadelphia, where, among other discriminatory actions, Phillies manager Ben Chapman instructed his players to verbally abuse Jackie Robinson. This work examines how Philadelphia acquired a reputation as a tough place for African American players. It follows the very slow and difficult progress of integration of the Philadelphia Phillies and Athletics. Attempts to integrate Philadelphia baseball began being made as early as the 1860s, and all of them proved futile until 1953. Those attempts and the reasons that they failed are discussed. The book provides biographical and statistical information on some of the African American players who were confronted with discrimination, and also looks at the white players, managers, coaches, and front office personnel who were having a difficult time accepting African American players on their teams.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 120-year history of the Philadelphia Phillies there is one unavoidable description of the franchise - it was often last, but seldom dull. This is a club, after all, that once had a lefthanded catcher named Jack Clements. Bill Hulen was a shortstop. He was also lefthanded. They had a pitcher who was aptly named "Boom Boom" Beck. Third baseman Mike Schmidt once tried to disguise himself by wearing a wig onto the field. The Phillies, the oldest, continuous one-city franchise in professional sports, surely have suffered more indignities than most other teams, as detailed in the updated softcover edition of Tales from the Phillies Dugout. No club has ever finished in last place 29 times, as the Phillies have. What other team has ever lost 23 games in a row, or blew a pennant after holding a six-and-a-half game lead with 12 games left to play? What other team hit .315 for the season, but lost 102 games while finishing 40 games out of first place? Fans should look at it this way, however - the Phillies are a team that has won a World Series and no less than five National League pennants. All of these things have been accomplished since 1883, too.The Phillies might also be among the league leaders in bizarre incidents and unusual characters. Some of the personalities fans will meet in Tales from the Phillies Dugout include John Kruk, Tim McCarver, Bob Uecker, Russ Meyer, and Jay Johnstone. All played with the Phillies. So did world-famous evangelist Billy Sunday, NFL Hall of Fame coach Greasy Neale, and a guy who did some managing named Casey Stengel. Some of their experiences are told here. Many of the stories head in the direction of being humorous, a few more serious. Some are even tragic. All in all, though, the updated softcover edition of Tales from the Phillies Dugout is a book about a franchise that has overflowed with colorful characters, and the strange, the odd, and the outrageous events with which they have been connected.

It began as a way to amuse friends as a diversion in the early days of stress, isolation, and fear in the spring of 2020 and the Pandemic caused by the deadly Covid-19 Virus. We had no way of knowing how bad things were going to be or how long isolation and social distancing might last. It was a frightening time and my only intention was to provide friends with a momentary diversion and some entertainment in hard times. Favorable encouragement pushed me into half-forgotten memories and these stories came tumbling out. My "diversion" came to life as something I have to share with others. I began working on The Secret Apartment as a memoir to be presented as a collection of short stories Though fanciful, these are true stories based on actual events. This is not the product of my imagination. I didn't have to make anything up. I didn't have to and everything presented is both true and correct.I hope you enjoy these stories as much as I enjoyed living them.
