These very trees, which. To the eye are least provided with flowery charms, and which never aspire, even in the height of their life, to be more than what neutral tints are to the artist, - these very trees are in winter, so rich in wonder, as to take rank with the most alluring forms of nature. The common hazel-nut in mid-win ter is hung with innumerable gray-green clusters the alder and willow-buds swell with leafy effort; the lat ter Often burst before Christmas, and disclose their silky contents. Everywhere there is the note of prep aration, and though the cold days and colder nights may chill their sap, the movement is still upwards spring is the desire, spring is the promised land and though the fireside may prove more inviting than the woodland, and incuriousness may leave them all unob served, no matter; every tree moves its steady way, seeking outlets at a thousand points; and by-and-by. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations on the Phenomena of Plant Life: A Paper Presented to the Massachusetts Board of Agriculture The observations concerning The Circulation of Sap in Plants, which I had the honor of presenting before the Board of Agriculture at their last country meeting, were so kindly received at the time, and awakened so much interest after their publication, that I have found it impossible to refrain from further investigations upon the phenomena of plant-life. Among the subjects to which special attention has been directed during the year, the following may be enumerated, viz.: First. The structure, composition and arrangement of the winter-buds of hardy trees and shrubs. Specimens for study were collected, in January and February last, from one hun dred and forty species, and some facts of interest recorded. Second. The percentage of water to be found in the branches and roots of trees during their annual period of repose, as well as when in active growth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plant-Life Popular Papers on the Phenomena of Botany The author.it certainly is a marked advantage in the study of natural history that it leads you on by the hand; it inveigles you, if I may say so, into learning what is good and what is useful. Many a one might have his mind first opened to the attractions of natural history, which mind if once opened, might perhaps be capable of applying itself beneficially to harder and more repulsive studies. These analogies of natural history are invaluable; they have a most gracious effect in developing the finer faculties of the mind they establish a connection between the different portions of creation. -right Hon. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Botany, the Story of Plant Life Plant life extends over almost the entire surface of the globe. If, as is highly probable, the waters of the Polar seas, under the perpetual ice-cap, have their algae, or sea-weeds, then the only places really destitute of vegetation are the crests of the highest mountains, the highest regions of glaciers and ever enduring snows. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plant Life Technical terms, which are the intellectual currency of the botanist, and imply in a single word or phrase what would be explained only in long sentences, have not been entirely avoided. Indeed, the author has been compelled to use a considerable number, but an effort has been made to lead up to their use in easy sequence, and to explain as tersely and clearly as possible what they mean. The glossarial index will assist the reader in discovering where the meanings of terms are explained. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Phenomena of Plant Life," by Leo H. Grindon, of Manchester, in which the development from the seed, through the changing seasons of the year, is very pleasantly set forth. There is nothing absolutely new in it; but not a little instruction is arrayed in such a manner that the mind takes it with a kind of refreshment. The last article in the book, on " The Oak " (an appendix to the others), seems to be the initial one of another series, intended by the author to mark out the features of such trees as belong to Britain, inquiring into the specialties that give them their several places in art and poetry. As the present volume is stereotyped, I hope the publishers will be induced to add the remainder of the series to subsequent editions. I notice in this paper that the writer puts it as a postulate that "the mind of that man grows up very differently who in his youth is accustomed to contemplate oaks, than that of him whose boyhood is spent near pines and firs," and this suggests climatic influences in fashioning history which Mr. Kingsley has brought into the sphere of romance in his new novel, "Hereward, the Last of the English," lately issued, with the author's sanction, by Ticknor & Fields.- Round Table, Volume 3

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Freaks and Marvels of Plant Life; Or Curiosities of Vegetation Text-books remind us of the importance of the vegetable world in its relationship to the animal. They also illustrate the grandeur and beauty which the plant has conferred on the world. It is difficult to form any adequate conception of the vast extent and unlimited variety of vegetable life. All we can do is to pick up here and there some object of special interest, gaze at it, marvel at it, try to com prehend it, if we can, and then pass on, leaving behind us a trackless ocean of wonderful things, to be picked up by our successors, and marvelled at as we have done. It will be very long before the store house is exhausted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. All of the alleged successful experiments in this direction have been shown to be the result of er rors, and as yet no successful attempts have been made to produce living matter by artificial means. So far as we know at the present time, all living things arise from preexisting ones by some form of reproduction. It is, however, the general belief of biologists, that at some remote period living mat ter arose from inorganic elements. The theory that living germs were brought to the earth from somewhere in space is not generally accepted; and the criticism has been made of this view that, after all, it does not explain the origin of life, but merely the advent of life upon the earth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Th Living Plant: A Description and Interpretation of Its Functions and Structure The very first words I would write in this book are addressed to my botanical colleagues, whom I wish to inform that the work is not intended for them. In this statement I am by no means invoking immunity from scientific criticism, but emphasizing the aim of the book. It is not designed as a digest of our present scientific knowledge of plant physiology for the use of experts in that subject, but, in conformity with the aim of the series of which it is a part, it seeks to present to all who have interest to learn an accurate and vivid conception of the principal things in plant life. I was once myself such a learner, and I have tried to write such a book as I would then have delighted to read. It is, in a word, an attempt at that literature of interpretation which was foreshadowed by Francis Bacon in the fine passage that stands on its dedicatory page. This aim will explain peculiarities of the work not otherwise obvious. Thus, I have been at more pains to be clear than to be brief, assuming on the part of my reader no great knowledge of the subject, but a large willingness to take trouble to learn; and as I have tried to discuss every process with fulness enough to elucidate its nature, my book has wandered through a leisurely course to a length quite shockingly great. But I comfort myself with the reflection that the plan and the subject hardly permit other treatment; for a royal road to a real understanding of plant phenomena does neither exist nor can it be built.
