Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pharmaceutical Era, Vol. 23: Weekly; January-June, 1900 The days of the pharmacist whose range covered the entire science and art of pharmacy are nearly over. The pharmacist, in keeping himself posted on the rapidly ln creasing number of medicaments, will find little time for manufacturing pharmaceutical products made by tedious processes. These will be relegated to the manufacturing pharmacist. Let the pharmacist take one last lingering look at those good old days that he reads about, and that he may perhaps wish back again, when he had a labora tory wherein be compounded the whole catalogue of pharmaceutical products, turn his face into the future, and say with Holmes: Build thee more stately mansions, O my soul! As the swift seasons roll! Leave thy low-vaulted past! Let each new temple, nobler than the last, Shut thee from heaven with a dome more vast. Till thou at length art free, Leaving thine outgrown shell by life's unresting sea! While looking into the future, it may be well, how ever, not to overlook the present. Political, social and commercial metamorphoses are not brought about in a day, or even a lifetime. The most urgent and most meces sary concern that man has, who is affected by them, is daily bread and butter. No man would -be satisfied with a meal that is guaranteed him fifty years hence. The physician - pharmacist by no means has reached his zenith, nor will he ever be the exclusive apostle of medicine and pharmacy. The present standpoint of the pharmacist is the one that prompts the penning of this article, and it is from this standpoint that we shall consider his right course of conduct. Experience and observation are, per haps, our best teachers, and it is from them that I cull a few tenets. Book excerpt: Lydia Pinkham was one of the 19th century’s most remarkable businesswomen, her influence spreading beyond the late 1800s and her native New England. A champion of equal rights for women and blacks at a time when such causes lacked widespread support, Pinkham was ahead of her time on other issues. Chief among them was the well-being of women struggling with serious health issues related to their menstrual cycles and other so-called “women weaknesses.” But as the teetotaling Pinkham and her namesake company soared to entrepreneurial heights by selling her patient relief in the guise of an alcohol-laced potion known as the Vegetable Compound, generations that followed have been left to wonder: Was she worthy of her female customers’ trust or just an opportunist? In Lydia Pinkham: The Face That Launched a Thousand Ads, historian Sammy R. Danna offers the latest book-length biography that explores all sides of the Lydia Pinkham phenomena. Danna illustrates how remarkable an American historical figure she was, who with associates masterfully used and reinvented the marketing tools of her day, while battling the misogyny of the medical establishment. But Danna also asks whether she was just a grandmotherly version of the pitchmen who roamed from town to town with their snake oil elixirs. Students and scholars in the fields of women’s studies, American culture, and the histories of medicine, advertising, and business will see Lydia Pinkham in a new light.

Book excerpt: Captain Isaac "Ike" Emerson, riding high on the international success of his patent, Bromo-Seltzer, lived a storied life of opulence. This first biography of the "Bromo-Seltzer King" traces his path from North Carolina farm boy to Baltimore-based multimillionaire with a penchant for lavish entertaining. Emerson is presented as an entrepreneur, patriot, civic leader, sportsman, and philanthropist. He was a phenom in his era, and this book, drawing from archival records, newspapers of the day, and interviews with descendants, details the ups and downs of his complex and indulgent life.
