A collection of large-format gouaches on paper, it depicts a wealth of permeating and overlapping figures, traces, signs, and quotations drawn from contemporaneous popular culture. This volume presents this work, and his entire production from the 1970s, including drawing, painting, and photography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Petty Bourgeois, Vol. 2 Every one has heard of the disasters of the Odeon, that fatal theatre which, for years and years, consumed the substance of all its directors. Rightly or wrongly, the quarter in which that dramatic impossibility is situated is still convinced that it is deeply interested in its prosperity, and more than once the mayor and most eminent citizens of the arrondissement, with a courage that does them honor, have been known to resort to the most des perate combinations to galvanize the corpse. To be connected with theatrical matters is one of the most persistent and undying ambitions of the lesser bourgeoisie; wherefore the successive saviors of the Odeon have always deemed themselves rewarded by being entrusted with an ostensible share in the management of the enterprise. Book Synopsis A Nation of Shopkeepers by : Dan Evans
Download or read book A Nation of Shopkeepers written by Dan Evans and published by Watkins Media Limited. This book was released on 2023-02-14 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Nation of Shopkeepers explores the unstoppable rise of the petite-bourgeoisie, one of the most powerful, but underexplored, classes in modern society. The petite-bourgeoisie — the insecure class between the working class and the bourgeoisie — is hugely significant within global politics. Yet it remains something of a mystery. Initially identified as a powerful political force by theorists like Marx and Poulantzas, the petit-bourgeoisie was expected to decline, as small businesses and small property were gradually swallowed up by monopoly capitalism. Yet, far from disappearing, structural changes to the global economy under neoliberalism have instead grown the petite-bourgeoisie, and the individualist values associated with it have been popularized by a society which fetishizes "aspiration", home ownership and entrepreneurship. So why has this happened? A Nation of Shopkeepers sheds a light on this mysterious class, exploring the class structure of contemporary Britain and the growth of the petite-bourgeoisie following Thatcherism. It shows how the rise of home ownership, small landlordism and radical changes to the world of work have increasingly inculcated values of petite-bourgeois individualism; how popular culture has promoted and reproduced values of aspiration and conspicuous consumption that militate against socialist organizing; and, most importantly, what the unstoppable rise of the petit-bourgeoisie means for the left.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Petty Bourgeois, Vol. 1 In the following pages, Madame, will be found one of those stories which come to an author's mind, he knows not whence, and take it captive before he has time to consider what sort of a welcome it will receive from the public, the all-powerful judge of the moment. Feeling almost sure of your indul gence for my infatuation, [dedicate this book to you: is it not fitting that it should belong to you as the tithe in the old days belonged to the Church, in memory of God, by whom everything is made to bloom and to ripen, in the fields and in the intellect? A few bits of clay, left by Moliere at the foot of his colossal statue of Tartuffe, are here worked over by a hand more audacious than clever; but, how ever far below the greatest of writers of comedy I am and must remain, I shall be content to have turned these crumbs picked up in the foreground of his play to some account, by exhibiting the modern hypocrite at work. The thing that most encouraged me in this difficult undertaking was that I found it to be entirely distinct from any religious question which 'must be put out of sight of one so devout as yourself, and because of that which a great writer has called indifference IN matters OF religion. Book Synopsis The Housing Question by : Frederick Engels
Download or read book The Housing Question written by Frederick Engels and published by . This book was released on 2021-05-16 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early-1870s, an ideological debate began to unfold in the German press on the shortage of affordable housing available to workers in major industrial areas. The rapid increase in industrial production necessitating an increase in industrial workers created a housing crisis. From June 1872 to February 1873, Fredrick Engels contributed a series of articles to the publication The Volksstaat (The People's State) titled "The Housing Question." Originally published as a booklet by the Co-Operative Publishing Society of Foreign Workers in the USSR and out of print for many years, INTERNATIONAL PUBLISHERS is proud to make this text available - as workers yet again face almost insurmountable obstacles to finding affordable housing. As Engels wrote in 1872, "What is meant today by housing shortage is the peculiar intensification of the bad housing conditions of the workers as the result of the sudden rush of population to the big towns; a colossal increase in rents, a still further aggravation of overcrowding in the individual houses, and, for some, the impossibility of finding a place to live in at all." Fredrick Engels' essays collected here as "The Housing Question" are just as relevant today, roughly 150 years after first written.
