Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pettingell Genealogy: Notes Concerning Those of the Name It was nearly ten years ago that he began to collect data con cerning people of the name. As he lived in the county in which his ancestor Richard had settled, he was able to take from local records much pertaining to the early generations. By constant correspondence he came into touch with the family at large, secur ing fragments of data which gradually found their proper places in his compilation. Several years went by in which his material over flowed from one record book into six, and his correspondence grew into the thousands. In 1901 the work, which was reasonably near completion, was suddenly stopped by the compiler's death. For nearly a year the manuscript lay untouched. In the spring of 1902, while a student in the Harvard Law School, I examined the data to see what could be done toward publication. I was entirely unfamiliar with this kind of work and had never seen the material which had been collected. To secure the opinion of an experienced person I carried the manuscript books to Mr. Charles H. Pope who had published genealogies of his own compilation and had edited the compilations of others. He reported that the manuscript was in a fine condition and but for arrangement and copying nearly ready for the printer. Upon his advice work was at once begun. Mr. Pope undertook the arrangement ofthe book, preparing a simple and comprehensive scheme which has proven sufficiently elastic to meet all demands.
