Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Periodical Cicada, Brood XIV The earliest known publication mentioning the species appeared in 1666, and several accounts were published before 1750. One (g) refers to an appearance at Plymouth, Mass in 1634. The early writers noted the unusual visitations of large numbers of the insects, their emergence holes, the noise made by them, and the damage done to the trees in oviposition. Writers from 1750 to 1775 knew of the periodic appearance and inferred the length of the period to be about 17 years. Later writers were more certain about the period. Linnaeus (g) described the Species in 1758 from Specimens from America. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Periodical Cicada Following brie y the history of the insect, the young ant-like larva, hatching from the egg a few weeks after the latter has been laid, escapes from the wounded limb, falls lightly to the ground, and quickly burrows out Of sight, forming for itself a little subterranean chamber or cell over some rootlet, where it remains through winter and summer, buried from light, air, and sun and protected in a manner from cold and frost. It lives in absolute solitude, separated from its fellows, in its moist earthen chamber, rarely changing its position save as some accident to the nourishing rootlet may necessitate its seeking another. In this manner it passes the seventeen or thirteen years Of its hypogeal existence in a dark cell in slow growth and preparation for a few weeks only of the society of its fellows and the enjoyment of the warmth and brightness of the sun and the fragrant air of early summer. During this brief period of aerial life it attends actively to the needs of continuing its species, is sluggish in move ment, rarely taking wing, and seldom takes food. For four or five weeks the male sings his song of love and courtship, and the female busies herself for a little longer period, perhaps, with the placing of the eggs which are to produce the subsequent generation thirteen or seventeen years later. At the close Of its Short adult existence the Cicada falls to the ground again, perhaps within a few feet of the point from which it issued, to be there dismembered and scattered about, carpeting the surface of the ground with its wings and the fragments of its body. Such in brief is the life round Of this anomalous insect. So far as is known, other cicadas appear every year, usually in comparatively small numbers, and this yearly recurrence has led to the belief that the larval existence of these species is much Shorter, if not limited to a single year. In the absence Of direct experimental proof, however, it may be true that all cicadas have a long larval existence, and the absence of well-marked broods in other species or the complete breaking up or scattering of these broods, so that individuals emerge practically every year, have erroneously been taken to indicate a much shorter term of underground life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Periodical Cicada: An Account of Cicada Septendecim and Its Tredecim Race, With a Chronology of All Broods Known It so happened that one Of the largest 17-year broods, together with one Of the largest 13-year broods, appeared simultaneously in the sum mer of 1868. Such an event, so far as regards these two particular broods, had not taken place since the year 1647, nor will it take place again till the year 2089. The Periodical Cicada in West Virginia issued January, 1893 was soon exhausted only a very few copies being left at the close Of the year Of its publication. Therefore, in consideration of the fact that considerable additional data has been gathered _with reference to the appearance Of the insect in 1898 and 1900, and that it is due to appear in a destructive swarm over a large area in the southern part Of the State in 1901, it seems that another Bulletin on the subject is desirable and important. We trust it will serve its main Object Of giving general information on this interesting and Often destructive insect, and Of warning farmers and fruit growers Of the danger of serious loss Of trees planted this fall or next spring Within the area occupied by the brood which is due to appear next May and June. Book excerpt: Every seventeen years, millions of cicadas rise from the soil of the eastern United States to fly, mate, and fill the air with their noisy song. Periodical Cicadas: The Brood X Edition Black and White edition provides a less costly examination of how the study of Brood X cicadas shaped our understanding of these "bugs of history." First documented in Philadelphia in 1715, Brood X was and is the largest of the 17-year cicada broods, occurring in 15 states that include several major cities. Periodical Cicadas: The Brood X Edition Black and White discusses the natural history, evolution, behavior, and distribution of periodical cicadas and provides an overview of the eighteen emergences that have occurred since the brood was first reported. It offers a perfect starting point to learn about these insects and to enjoy them as one of the wonders of our natural world.Gene Kritsky, Ph.D., is Dean of the School of Behavioral and Natural Sciences at Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati, Ohio. He is the author of several books, including The Quest for the Perfect Hive and The Tears of Re: Beekeeping in Ancient Egypt (both published by Oxford University Press). He has researched periodical cicadas for over 45 years, publishing 33 papers and three books on the insects.
