Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art in Painting In this book an effort is made to trace in the history Of painting the essential continuity Of the great traditions and to Show that the best Of the modern painters use the same means, to the same general ends, as did the great Florentines, Venetians, Dutchmen and Spaniards. TO Show that continuity, it has been necessary to analyze the plastic forms of the principal painters from the dawn Of the Italian Renaissance down to the present day. His torical data are treated as merely incidental: no attempt has been made to present a complete summary Of the history of painting, although no important movement and no really first-class artist has been entirely left out of account in the general evaluations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore the history of art with this discussion of some of the world's greatest painters and their works. Wedmore's book opens with a brief introduction to painting, in which the author declares, "Of all pictorial Arts, major and minor... it is Painting that makes to the mass of us the easiest and most fascinating appeal." Wedmore holds painting alongside literature as a valuable record of the past, and believes the works of the world's great painters provides civilization with portals into specific periods of history. He does not hide his preferences, but rather embraces them as he takes the reader on a journey through time and place while discussing his most revered artists. Chapters are devoted to individuals such as Durer, Holbein, Hogarth, and Romney, as well as broader topics such as Spanish painters, later English art, French eighteenth-century art, and impressionism. A series of black and white reproductions serves as an appendix. Wedmore's book is one that will appeal to art historians or anybody that loves painting. It is a reference book, but one that does not pretend to be all encompassing. This is one man's guide (albeit one highly learned man) to his personal favorite artists, and does not attempt to be anything else. Wedmore does not apologize for leaving certain artists out of this book, and the reader ultimately benefits from the author's convictions. Painters and Painting is a wonderful book about a selection of the world's great artists and their paintings and fully deserves its place in anyone's library. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Painting Popularly Explained With Historical Sketches of the Progress of the Art Although a degree of imitation is necessary in a work of art for the conveyance of thought, the quantity or exactitude of imitation in a picture forms by no means a measure of the amount of thought or emotion which it may awaken, apart from the simple ideas which the mind receives through the painted resemblance of natural objects. Indeed, literal imi tatien is sometimes so much dissociated from imagination, that Haydon went so far as to say, that 'the power of representing things as they are, constituted merely the painter of domestic art;' adding, with characteristic bold ness and enthusiasm, while that of restoring them to what they were at creation constitutes the great painter in High Art.' When we reflect, however, upon the inexhaustible richness of nature, a more humble spirit of imitation appears not only excusable, but laudable. Modern pre-raphaelitism is on this ground - viz., that of protest - chiefly serviceable to art. For it is a mistake to suppose that artistic imitation can ever be entirely mechanical, that it is only a means to an end, or that it is but as language is to thought. The eye has its own poetry, and the faithful rendering of the simplest object in nature has a special value and beauty that touches some of the pleasantest chords of our being. Still we must unhesitatingly give the preference to those works in which we have not only the inherent and intrinsic poetry of art, but also subject and incident conveying thought, expression, and sentiment. Moreover, though art is finite, yet nearly every branch is too comprehensive in its means for one man to do justice to all its capabilities; hence a larger measure than usual of the judgment and taste necessarily shown in selection and adaptation is justly allowed to distinguish and elevate the artist. 'style in the highest sense arises from the peculiar bias the artist takes in this selection and adap tatien. But style' is also applied to the several methods of painting materially considered; for the painter is a curious combination of poet and mechanic, as his picture is a curious compromise between a thought and a thing.' The catalogue of paintings has been greatly extended, and ren dered more complete. It is not, of course, exhaustive, nor can it be supposed to record all the masterpieces of Re naissance painting, except in regard to those artists who produced few pictures, or of whose works but few still exist. The selections have been made with the assist ance of the best authorities in the history of art, and years of earnest personal study. We are not here going to enter into that great discussion, which is not yet finished, as to whether Oil painting was really discovered by Van Eyck, but perhaps we may venture to say that its discovery was really caused by a mistake. In the first place, neither John Van Eyck nor his brother ever acquainted anybody with their processes, and their secrets died with them and if report is to be credited, they were even so jealous that they stabbed one prying individual who ventured into their studio. In vain distinguished artists, attracted by the fame Of the two brothers, came from Italy to Bruges they could learn nothing, except that the belief spread that Van Eyck owed the exceeding brilliancy Of his colours to the use Of Oil.
