Book excerpt: The perceptions and experiences of female community college administrators, particularly those that are part of the Millennial generation, have often been neglected in current research. This study examines community college leadership in a new context, by exploring the lived experiences of female identifying Millennials. More specifically, this study was developed to better understand how gender may impact Millennial women's perceptions of leadership overall, as well as their perceived ability to move into senior-level leadership roles within the community college. Utilizing a qualitative methodology, this study included the use of semi-structured interviews to obtain data from twenty female Millennial community college administrators across the United States. This study utilized a phenomenological approach in order to identify key themes from the interviews. Findings from this study support the view that inequities and injustices are still present for women, including Millennial women, working in community college administration. The findings further revealed that institutions of higher education need to continue striving for more equitable policies and procedures. The stories and experiences shared within this study shed light on the current environment and institutional culture as it pertains to female identifying, Millennial administrators. More broadly, this research provides new insight into identifying and altering existing structures of inequity within the community college.

This research study present findings from a qualitative study that examined how women of color (African American, Asian American, Hispanic, and Native American) navigated the community college pipeline and were able to achieve success by obtaining higher-level administrative positions. Six women of color who held higher ranking administrative positions at a community college district in North Texas shared their experiences, achievements, adversities, and resiliency approaches. The study examined the strategies for success that these women implemented in order to secure leadership roles at their community colleges. The study investigated the obstacles and opportunities participants encountered as they traversed the leadership pipeline. The study provides an understanding to the extensiveness of women of color in higher-level administrative positions in community colleges in Texas. The significance of this study expands the literature about women of color in higher-level administration and contributes to the transformation in the hiring practices that community colleges currently use. The study provides a paradigm to current community college leaders about practices for employee recruitment and retention that benefit women of color. Finally, the study contributes to the literature about the influence that culture has in the career path of women of color in higher-level administrative positions.

Yet, community college history is grounded in male dominance and women leaders remain marginalized in the community college system. The purpose of my study was to examine some of the factors that contribute to women executive leaders' success specifically: (a) how women experience their leadership role in the community college, (b) how women vice presidents use transformational leadership, and (c) how women administrative vice presidents have learned to lead. In the literature review, I considered leadership, the community college, organizational culture, women's development and learning. The research approach for this study was an exploratory case study design. The participants were female Vice Presidents in community colleges within the Western United States. To answer research questions about the participants' perspectives on leadership in the community college, use of transformational leadership practices, and learning to lead, I used a survey instrument and conducted interviews. By exploring factors that contribute to the success of women executive leaders, one intention of this study was to arm institutions with information to support the development of women leaders as efforts focus on addressing the leadership crisis, and inform aspiring women leaders while they make their ascent to the executive leadership ranks.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Critical research on the intersections of gender, race and class on women faculty of color largely addresses the experience of those in 4-year universities. In addition, the available research on community college faculty namely addresses the perceptions of culture and climate by those of White women faculty. To date, the scholarship on the experiences of women faculty of color (WFofC) in community colleges is nearly nonexistent. This study offers in-depth insight into the experiences of WFofC at 2-year institutions, contributing to the emerging body of critical research. Bringing the perspectives of WFofC at 2-year institutions to the forefront validates not only their presence in academe, but also acknowledges and celebrates their work as committed educators. Semi-structured interviews were collected from 37 participants who represented 11 different community colleges in the urban/suburban regions of Los Angeles and Orange Counties in southern California. Findings revealed that WFofC experience multiple forms of marginalization, as well as agency. The intersections of gender, race and class manifested themselves in the findings and confirmed that the experiences of WFofC can be unified as a collective minority experience to contrast dominant groups. They are simultaneously diversified because of the unique differences in ethnic identity and lived experience amongst each other. For many, the institutional culture and climate perceived by WFofC in community colleges validated that it was "chilly" and not as "warm" as those from research findings that sampled White women faculty. The type of the community college district, department culture and status in the faculty hierarchy were factors that influenced their experience of climate. Despite many expressing the culture of their institutions as being "hostile," these women of color were overwhelmingly satisfied in their faculty work. Their commitment to serving underrepresented students, and sense of responsibility to the community at large, mediated the chilliness. Recommendations for future research include further analyses of the rich data collected from this study. Recommendations for policy and practice include institutionalizing the hiring of diverse administrators and faculty to reach critical mass. Furthermore, community college leaders should provide formal support for WFofC through ongoing structured mentoring opportunities and faculty learning communities.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate the career paths and preparation of female vice-presidents employed in community colleges in the state of Mississippi. There is limited qualitative information available that describes the career paths of vice-presidents in the state’s community colleges. Community colleges are making great strides in promoting women in leadership roles in administration, but research indicates there still seems to be a question as to the leadership ability of women. This study used the qualitative case study research approach, and 4 female community college vice-presidents shared their career experiences through in-depth interviews. The instruments included a brief demographic survey, interview guide and curriculum vita for each participant. Each participant in this study was currently serving in the position of vice-president in 1 of Mississippi’s community colleges. The conceptual framework of the study illustrates the exploration of female community college administrators in the areas of career paths, professional responsibilities and career aspirations. The participants described their career paths to their current positions by educational levels, diverse professional experiences, sharing their career barriers they faced in their career paths, the strategies that helped them succeed. They described their professional responsibilities which involved association with organizations outside their normal responsibilities. They also described barriers or obstacles faced while accomplishing their professional responsibilities, as well as strategies for overcoming those barriers. The participants described their major accomplishments in their professional career and offered advice to aspiring female community college vice-presidents. The key themes that emerged from the study include professional experience diversity, parental influence, importance of mentor relationships and positive role models, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) participation, facing and overcoming professional challenges, and the positive influence of serving others. Of the 4 study participants, 3 indicated they did not set out to become community college vice-presidents. Each participant felt it was her exposure and diverse backgrounds that got her noticed, and all were well prepared when the opportunity to serve in this role presented itself.

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of employees in leadership-training programs and how a community college can invest in leadership training to create a sustainable leadership model. To understand leadership training better, the researcher employed a qualitative approach. The researcher used demographic data and content from an employee engagement survey to create open-ended questions for the interviews. The researcher investigated how a community college develops a collaborative leadership model that is sustainable after investing in leadership-training programs for its employees. Two research sub-questions were investigated to address the main question: what experiences do community college employees have related to leadership-training programs provided by the institution? In order to go deeper into this question about their experiences, the following two sub-questions were explored: (1) How did the employees' experiences influence their perception of success at the institution? (2) Did the leadership-training programs increase the employees' abilities to collaborate within the institution? These interviews provided the researcher with insight into the shared experiences of the participants and their feelings on employees' success and collaboration within a community college. The themes of follow-up training, relevancy, promotion within, fear of retribution, valuing employees, conflict resolution, collaboration, and civility were common throughout the interviews. These are important themes that will help a community college with professional and leadership development.

Book excerpt: The California Community College system is the largest system of higher education in the nation, with 2.6 million students attending 112 colleges. Community colleges are integral to workforce development, economic recovery, and an accessible and affordable gateway for transfer to four-year universities. While community college student population is very diverse, executive leadership is not necessarily representative of these shifting demographics. Organizations and aspiring leaders may not be prepared for the mass vacancies created by impending retirements of executive leadership positions (ELP) at community colleges.This study sought, through the counterstories of female community college presidents of color, to identify challenges and opportunities for California community colleges to develop representative and sustainable executive leadership and organizational cultures inclusive and supportive of aspiring female community college presidents of color. Specifically, this study sought to illuminate various career paths of female leaders of color in higher education, as well as unique personal, professional, and organizational challenges that may hinder their ascension. Setting the context for this study are the shifting demographics of community college campuses, impending mass retirements of community college presidents in the next five years, and organizational culture and practices that may impede the ascension of female administrators of color that could present a challenge for organizations to foster sustainable and representative leadership. Within a conceptual context of Critical Race Theory, narrative counterstories illustrate the career paths and experiences of female community college presidents of color and allow the analysis of organizational culture factors to understand if and how organizational and cultural systems at California community colleges may exist that hinder the recruitment, support, and professional ascension of female community college presidents of color.
